Yes, that Mount Saint Helens, otherwise known as Loowit. The one that blew up in 1980. You can hike or skin up to the top of an active volcano and then ski down it. I did it on backcountry skis and skinned up as far as possible. This mountain is relatively close to both the Portland area and the Seattle area, and it's a relatively easy, non-technical climb. I was able to obtain the summit without ice axe or crampons.
This route climbs Loowit by way of the Swift Creek ski trail and the Worm Flows climbing trail, starting at Marble Mountain Snopark. This is a different route than the Summer climb, wherein you start at Climber's Bivouac and climb up Monitor Ridge.

climbed and skied it yesteday! fortunate enough that there was snow from the trailhead, after ~4k bootpacking another bit of hiking wouldve been a killer. Bulletproof in the morning heading up to the point where it was sketchy even with ski crampons but timed the descent down for about 4.5k of beautiful corn with only about half mile of grabby snow/ riskier avy conditions, once you were back on the ski trail below treeline it was primo corn again

It is not that hard. Good skiers usually can go up faster than hikers. I did it this year at age 67 without trouble. Best to start up early so it does not freeze before you go down. Done now 4 times. Stayed at cougar Campground twice.

I did it again a year later with better bindings and made it to the top just fine. I didn't realize at the time that the frame bindings I was using really were that awful! It was like a night and day different experience. I also slept at the trail head the 2nd time. I'm not sure if that helped or not, but it sure couldn't have hurt!

That sunrise shot alone makes me want to do this.

Worth noting, that depending on the time of year you are required to get a permit online via a first come first serve system. They often sell out as soon as they are available. During the off season (when this video was likely done), you just need to fill out the wilderness permit.

Thank You! I totally forgot to mention that! I never climb it in Spring/Summer so I didn’t even think about it.

Great video, I am not a skier but an avid trail runner. Looking at doing this ascent this coming winter sans skis. Sounds like it is a manageable for somebody who is in good physical condition and used to being in the elements. Are you saying people who hike it just glisade down on a sleeping pad? Also, I saw somebody brought their dog to the rim in the background. Whoa. What is the best time of winter to do this?
@VoiceOverTrailReviews
@VoiceOverTrailReviews 3 года назад
Best time of Winter to climb is February thru April. People glisade on sleeping pads. I recommend bringing ice axe and learning to self arrest if you’re going to glisade. You can really hurt yourself glisading. Get mountaineering boots and crampons. As a trail runner you’re in plenty good shape to do this. Way better in the Winter than Summer. Have fun!!! 🙂

@@VoiceOverTrailReviews Yes it is, the hard part is coming back down. I climbed the mountain on foot with a friend of mine and his kids, we get to the top and his daughter pulls a kitten out of her jacket that she had recently gotten.

@@mikedeal7457 😹😹😹 Poor Kitteh! I’ve never ridden a snowmobile, but I imagine you’d have to be pretty skilled to get one up there! Do they use the same Worm Flows route or some other way up? I’ve just never seen any evidence of snowmobiles above tree line. Like, I’ve seen them parked at Marble Mountain, but then they disappear....🤷‍♂️
@mikedeal7457
@mikedeal7457 3 года назад
@@VoiceOverTrailReviews I have gone up the trench on the Lahar side and we would go in on the Red Rock area work our way above tree line and then peg it to the top, that was the easiest way. A lot of snowmo riding happens on the Plains. You can ride over to marble mt. and you can go down towards Smith creek and you can head toward Kalama horse camp. I don't snowmobile anymore but had a lot a fun when I did, very expensive sport and the snow now days can be very flaky from year to year.
