I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't get this song - which captures the beauty and insanity of a mind that can't _not_ be musical, a mind epitomized by the legendary Brian Wilson's. I love this song so much and would give it ten thumbs up if I could.
@@daspoohmunich7235 Harbor Beach...on the east side of the state? Nice area. I went to a high school playoff football game there 7-8 years ago. I live just outside of Lansing so it was a nice 3-4 hour drive to the game.
Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night, just to check out the late-night record shop. Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane; but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop. It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning, It's a matter of fact. You can call me Pavlov's dog Ring a bell and I'll salivate- how'd you like that? Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue, cause right now I'm [Chorus] Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did. So I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles. and I'm thinking about what to think about. Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile, and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought because I am [Chorus] And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox, wondering where the hell all the love has gone. Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun, and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun." [Chorus] I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds and though I was very heavy, I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground Somebody help me because I'm [Chorus] Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night. Just to check out the late-night record shop. Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane; but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.
My friends and I were playing guitars in the park, and a man came over, and asked to see the guitar, we were a little wary of him because we obviously didn't want him to take off with it. He sat down in the middle of a group of high schoolers and sang the most beautiful version of this song I have ever heard...amazing. So chilling and almost somber...but beautiful.
I remember the day we shot this video..amazing 3 day shoot, the fellas (BNL) were perfect gentleman and made my directing and my crew extremely pleased with working with them! Not to mention Best Director Much Music Video Award, Peoples Choice, that Year. And a special thank you and condolences to the cast and crew who are no longer with us, RIP. W

i am a brother from jamaica .. this song just does something for me love the tempo. just really love this song..it's so true they need that signiture leading voice back..
Agreed.....Stephen Page was the voice of the boys, for sure. When Ed "took over" he was good.......but Page had that "signature" voice. You coined it correctly!
Steven Page did a tour with a symphony earlier this year, and I was the photographer for one of the shows. They did a sound check and played this, and I was the only person in the room (besides the musicians and the sound guy)... I was in absolute awe. I love this song!

@@g9g9g9 Unless I am mistaken it has to do with an interview that was done in the mid 70's on the beach boys individually, Brian Wilson stayed in bed for the entire interview, when it was done he said "well I should get out of bed now, lol. but it could be about something else
@@injun65 i always thought it was a metaphor for depression, cause Brian had been in bed a lot for a few years. but then as the saying goes, sometimes a duck is just a duck
I still remember going to watch these guys play at Bumpershoot in Seattle, WA way back in '93 before anybody even knew who they were. They blew away the entire audience and wailed out every song, especially this one, my favorite. They even upstaged The Violent Femmes. I can still remember their amazing breakdance routine at the end of the show. Man, this band rocked and STILL rocks!

Kroban3 underrated in this case means overlooked. I am from the UK. The minute I heard this song I loved it. I still listen to it now. Steven Page has an astounding voice.
I love how the clothing of the band members and even the lyrics “just to check out the late night record shop” date this song. It’s so fantastically 90’s. What a wonderful time that was, and I’m sadly afraid that we’ll never get back to that place again.
Guys, come on: let Steven back in the band. One of my favorite memories was seeing you guys in concert at Hershey, PA promoting "Everything to Everyone." It's just not the same without him. I know he messed up, but hasn't enough time passed?
Just saw Brian Wilson in concert last week with an 11-member band. I thought it would be good ... it was absolutely fantastic! They did a SEVEN-song encore after a full show with no intermission. Great to see one of the best overcome his issues and get back our there again.
+scottutube1 I'm going to see him in the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in May and am going to the pre-show meet and greet. It will be an honour to meet the great man, and his band which includes Al Jardine. I can't wait!
Page is a hipster!.. its what you meninials call us Gen X hipsters.. its the generation that was born to hippies.. A hipster must have been born between the mid 70s to mid eighties.. A real hipster didn't were those harry potter glasses in the 80s and 89s.
I've been running an experiment for years with this song. When I go into a bar where you can control the jukebox, I play this one every time - and this is (by my VERY scientific research) the most universally loved song by everyone. Almost all the patrons know the words, they're singing or dancing along - it never fails

Fun fact: Steve Page wrote this song as a teenager. He will sometimes tell the story when performing live. It’s not just a fun tribute to Brian Wilson, it’s a song about mental health. Page (and the whole band really) are on another level when it comes to musical melodies and story telling. If you get the chance, see him live. And the Bare Naked Ladies. Not sure if we would ever get a reunion tour, but if so, it would be a dream come true for the fans.
Page's split (2009) from Barenaked Ladies was prompted by his bandmates. He had been arrested for cocaine possession. Plus there were rumours about other serious inappropriate behaviour. There is zero chance of a reunion. He did perform with them in 2018 to receive an award at the Junos. It is very unfortunate cuz he was an important member of the band.

It all ways struck me about these guys...on the surface so funny and off the wall..and then when you listened lose about what they were talking about....God it just killed ya
@@nocheteipsum The BNLs with Steve were very much like Brian Wilson's Beach Boys -- an image of fun fun fun, but very complex music and deep melancholy in many of their ballads.
Heck, how this guy is missed in the Ladies' formation. Steve still sounds like BNL, and will always do, even as a soloist. I wish he returns one day, even if it's only for a tour, an album, whatever.
This song is the all-time best showcase of Steven Paige's voice and all he can do with it. He is great with delivering lyrics with just the right touch.

I have talked with others who are BNL fans about this song, most younger then I. When I bring up the song's subject matter I get a blank look from them. Brian Wilson, Smiley Smile, 300lbs, acid, sandbox etc., they just think it is some obscure reference to some guy names Brian Wilson....smh. They have no idea about the mental breakdown, his addict drummer brother Dennis and their "sessions" of cheeseburgers, drugs and new "songs". They aren't even aware that his was a/the Beach Boy.
Haha yeah, fuck everyone who hasn't researched the lyrics to this song. Also fuck people who don't know the difference between then and than. Would you like to know the difference between a douche and a cool person? A cool person will take their knowledge and share it with someone rather than shit on someone for not knowing what they know.
Cigarrock Thanks for assuming I haven't shared any knowledge of anything with anyone....your post is that of an impotent oracle. However, how would I know?
they are aware of brian Wilson and his trials and tribulations of his life!! as a matter of fact they were suppose to do this live at the brian Wilson tribute show in march of 2001 but had to back out because of their tour!! my friend david leaf directed the show at radio city music hall!! thanx for the interest of brian and his tragic life

OMG you guys don't know what you done for me in life! First of all you did it for me and my twin sister! But she died this past summer she died unexpectedly August 2nd 2020 22. But when the old apartment comes on that was her mind's most favorite song I guess besides Brian Wilson LOL😊 but why we were listening to the old apartment we were beat each other up while listening to yourself LOL I miss her so much I just want to get into a big fight every time I hear your song ❤️❤️😊

I agree the Bare Naked Ladies are an unjustly under-rated band. The instrumentals on this song are brilliant, and I've always loved their ferocious lyrics.
Neil Leisenheimer I guess I shouldn't say I don't admit to liking them. If someone asked me ' Do you like the BN ladies ? I would say yes..I guess I just mean I don't go around talking about the fact that I like them. I only own one of their albums...but I'm cool with them, for sure.
The mid to late 90's, in my opinion, were the best songs ever in a generation. That's a lot to say from a guy who lived thru the 80's. BNL, Tonic, Vertical Horizon, Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews...
this has been one of my family songs throughout my life. It my fav at 12 and still my fav at 22. Thanks for being there BNL, you’ve gotten me through a lot ♥️

I honestly think this song massively shaped the trajectory of Barenaked Ladies. This was from BNL's debut album, and while it definitely still had many tongue-in-cheek songs, songs like this still showed a seriousness and a vulnerability. But, people didn't take the song seriously. Some saw it as more of a mocking put-down against Wilson, others just saw it as quirky and goofy, since that's what they expected from BNL. I think that reception probably solidified the band's decision to stick to a more quirky, light-hearted tone for their future music. And while I do love BNL's music, I do wonder if we missed out on a lot more songs like this because of the reception it received. Either way, I think this is undeniably their best song, and it's a testament to just how good a songwriter Steven Page is.

I've seen these guys 3 times live in concert. Their music still brings me back to when I was a teenager. Powerful songs and powerful lyrics combined with a haunting voice. I will never grow old of BNL , specifically Gordon.
I only just realized I'm a huge BNL Fan. I never thought I'd say that. But I was born in Scarborough and remember the 90's there... It was strange. This song is really well crafted. Feel bad that they shunned the Singer dude after his Coke in the Washroom strangeness. I don't think they have ever done anything of greatness without that Dude...
That wasn't the reason- He left the band to pursue a solo career. That was that. Then BNL made "You Run Away" which, even though they don't really admit it, it was clearly about Page. I think it's great. We get double the amount of good songs!
They look like they were supposed to do a cameo in that PBS show named Arthur, but the animators forgot to actually animate them, so they made this video at the last minute.
