In this video I'll go over my process for tuning arrows to my bow. This process is one of several methods for arrow tuning, its called bareshaft tuning. Its a way to adjust the spine of your arrow to perfectly match your bow. I hope you enjoy.
The arrows shown in this video are Black Eagle Instincts, you can buy a dozen here-

What does it mean if im shoot nock high? My arrow is perfect left and right I shoot a fixed crawl fyi
@InstinctiveAdventures
@InstinctiveAdventures 4 года назад
Nock high normally means you should move your nock point up but I’m honestly not sure how a fixed crawl factors into that equation. Obviously it will totally jack you up. If it’s minor I wouldn’t worry about it

I was wondering what is best to cut carbon arrows with.

If moneys not an issue an arrow saw is best by far. You seem me cutting them with a metal blade in a radial saw in this video, and I’ve also bought the little harbor freight saw and it works okay too

“Bass-Ackwards” bareshaft tuning. 👍🏻👍🏻 I do the same with a little variation. I start with full length shafts & install the inserts & field points = to the weight up front I want. Then I shoot & trim from the back to get the best flight, impact and also set my nock height. WhenI get one shooting the way I want, I will make up all my bare-shafts to match & ‘nock’ tune for grouping. What I want, like you, is a slightly weak bare-shaft...fletching afterwards usually pulls them to center but if not I will shim my side plate. Final arrows are GT 3555 TRADS...28.75” C to C with 300 grains up front (inserts & broadheads). 4” fletch, around 600 grain total & 20%+ FOC. out of my recurves & longbows they ain’t fast but make my bows very quiet & penetration is excellent (like trying to stop a freight train.

I used to cut from the rear. But I ended up having long fletch right off the info wrap of an arrow, it just looked dumb. I’m probably gonna sand the markings off these instincts and throw a crest on so it wouldn’t have mattered.

@@InstinctiveAdventures Years ago I competed in NFAA Field & Indoor tournaments and started super tuning my arrows. I would mix & match full length arrows & tips until they all weigh within 1 grain of each other from lightest to heaviest. Then I would bare-shaft & trim from the back to set the spine (overall length did not matter). Once I got shaft slapping groups at 20 yards I would fletch them with 3 alternating colors on each shaft using a wide variety of colors AND setting my nocks for different cock feather/vane colors. I did that for the psychological impact on my competitors. “Any stick make bow but good arrow heap damn work.”. Tommy the Indian from “The Witchery of Archery”. 😉

@@InstinctiveAdventures Since you and I made our "purchase," I've been thinking about the "cut from the rear end of the shaft" idea and, like you, how the fletching would end up being over the shaft's "info" wrap. And like your sand & crest idea, I figured if I'm going to use wraps on my arrows it really won't matter. BUT...I realized if someone wanted to fletch a "wrap-less shaft," all they'd have to do is take ONE of the twelve shafts and use it as a guinea pig...use that ONE shaft as the "sacrifice" to determine the correct bare shaft length. Then you'd know how long to cut the other eleven shafts. I was actually laying on bed last night mulling this issue over in my head!!! Yea, I'm an idiot...

I have a 46 lb @ 27”. Black widow pma. I got a dozen of the 400 spine instincts. And use 150grain points. Havnt bareshafted yet but do you think that is a good spine for that poundage?
@InstinctiveAdventures
@InstinctiveAdventures Год назад
Might be too stiff, but will be close. Those instincts don’t act like their spine from my experience either. So I might be wrong. Bareshaft will be the only way to tell

Just saw this new video you did a good job, I have been doing the same thing with aluminum arrows working for the perfect combination of spine, arrow weight, tip weight to achieve the best arrow flight possible. All the testing takes time and a lot of shooting but I enjoy it. Once you finally work through the process and get great arrow flight its all worth it. Keep testing and shooting and good luck this season.

It is a lot of work but it’s definitely worth it.

How did you decide the starting spine? That's a 100gr outsert and what looks like a 200gr point. Do you choose based on full length from Black Eagle's chart then start tuning and cutting?
@InstinctiveAdventures
@InstinctiveAdventures Год назад
Really great question, I should have said something in the video. If you’re using standard inserts with a standard 100-150 head you can use manufacture spine charts, if you’re going more of a higher FOC mindset and using brass inserts or a heavier head you’ll want to use a dynamic spine calculator. That will at least get you into the ballpark. 3 rivers has a pretty decent spine calculator
@InstinctiveAdventures
@InstinctiveAdventures Год назад
If you’re more of a hands on person starting with a blank slate you can order spine kits for both shafts and heads. Again three rivers sells spine kits where you get basically one of each spine
