The real secret to most drawing is 1. 90% observation, 10% actual drawing. Taking the time to really analyze the subject. 2. Drawing very VERY lightly. Darken only when you are absolutely sure that proportions lines details etc. are correct. 3. Usually drawing quickly and fluidly but I beg to differ. Take your time and remember that art is about self improvement not a competition. 4. Save all your art. Even the bad ones so you can also study and reflect of your improvment. Also you can retry the subject again now that your skills are better! 5. Art is a skill not gift. Anyone can learn to draw/paint. Patience is an absolute must and most rewarding after a few years. 6. Dedication. Take time to do it. Period. Just a few minutes a day or an hour or two or more if you become skilled.

People will argue with me to hell and back believing that art is a gift from the heavens.
@oight

@@yvonneoy3124 yeah no good artist is good without a lot of practice. however, i do think that sometimes two artists that spend an equal amount of time practising, one may adapt and learn better than the other one. art is just like any subject, you need to spend a lot of time on it but sometimes some might learn faster than others.

Absolutely agree. I tried some bargue exercises on my own but I didn’t have any fundamental skills needed to do them properly. I just spent a ton of time measuring, not knowing when something was good enough. Only when I had an instructor at an atelier that knew what she was doing did I actually learn how to properly do them an understand why it was so important to do them.

After asking I watched your Bargue 2 and 3 videos, and they (together with what is in your drawing essentials about Bargue) should be more than enough. Hey Steve, what size should the plates be scaled up to (from the book) before drawing them? I read the original plates were 24x18 inches... is that what you'd recommend? Most videos i've seen seem to have them a lot smaller, at around A4 size
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork Год назад
Some can be copied at a4 size. others, the more advanced mostly, should be a bit larger than that.

Hi, I would like to know, are Bargue's exercises in your opinion and experience preliminary to studying anatomy? Or is it better to have studied anatomy first?
@urthsfount5611
@urthsfount5611 Год назад
My guess is that you learn anatomy as you do bargue drawings, since the starting bargue plates doesn’t seem to require you to know the anatomy of the body but towards the end you probably need to.
@stephencurry6743
@stephencurry6743 Год назад
Sir what do you mean when you say you will only get half of what you should from drawing the bargues if you don’t get any feed back? I really don’t like the way they look but I would for sure take my time to do it if it will help build my art skills a lot.
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork Год назад
2 things: to know that you are interpreting the concepts as intended, and to be pushed beyond the level that you think you are aspiring to. These things are more easily attained from outside.

Hi Stephen. Question if I may. I've accidentally began a layer of shadow with my 2H (graphite) as opposed to my 2B. Once I've completed this layer can I then layer over with the 2B or is best to now get as dark as possible with layers of 2H only? Any help would be appreciated.
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork 3 года назад
Go to 2b. It's possible that the surface of the value area gets a bit "sealed" by the 2h, depending on how much of it you put on, but you should be able to add value with your 2b.
@symmachus898
@symmachus898 3 года назад
@@stephenbaumanartwork That's exactly what I was wondering. I think it's a 50/50 scenario as I'd layered more than once in initial area before I noticed. Won't do that again! Thanks
