Before you do anything, please check out my young friend, Emily Kim’s cover of “Limelight”. It’s what we worked on when we met at the music store and I think she did a great job on it.
• Limelight bass cover -...
I’ve gotten a surprising number of requests for this song, so here it is - “Bark At The Moon”, the title track off the album by Ozzy Osbourne which came out in 1983 and features The Great Bob Daisley on bass.
I’ve always liked Bob Daisley’s playing (and songwriting). To my ears, he’s one of the few pick players who sounds as if he’s playing with his fingers, but there’s no denying that a pick is involved in the rapid-fire, bass bursts he’s known for. I’m able, to some extent, mimic that speed by using triplets, but I’d normally use a fretted note beneath the top note, or an open string, to land on. In this song, the triplets in the “Then when he's found who he's looking for…” parts are an F# octave which means I had to jump over the C# on the A string on the way do landing on the F# on the E. It’s doable, but a bit more tricky…for me anyway. I couldn’t imagine being able to play it as cleanly as Daisley does using a pick. Another thing I admire about his playing is the tight staccato he often uses. I noticed in this video that during the verses I seem to be actually pulsing (lifting my finger rhythmically off of the fretted A note) my left hand to assist in the muting and choking off the notes. Not sure if it’s actually doing anything, but it makes me feel as though I am.
I did the cover about a year and a half ago, using a beautiful Alembic Essence bass that my brother-in-law was selling and gave to me to check out. Everything about the bass just oozed “quality” but I just couldn’t seem to get this dog to bark. I’m sure another player could, but the bass just didn’t sound right in my hands, so I had to pass on it.
One of the people who suggested the song mentioned that there was an “isolated bass” track available on RU-vid which I listened to (well after I recorded the cover) and, while I did fairly well figuring the song out, there are a couple of spots where I’m off. One thing I noticed was that he sounds like he’s hammering-on and pulling-off some of the notes in the bass/guitar unison riff just before the vocals come in…A#,A,A#,C,A#,A,G,F. I’m plucking each note and, on the isolated track, he’s got a bit more “flow” going on. The other part in question are the quick bursts that take place during the choruses. He’s playing each note quickly with a pick and I’m using triplets with the open E string as a landing pad. However, I’m playing an G,A,G, using the 10th and 12th frets on the A string, but it sounds like he continues going up, as in, G,A,B (10th,12th,14th frets). As hard as I listen for it in the recording, I still can’t hear it, but it’s there in the isolated track.
If you didn’t check out Emily’s “Limelight” cover, please do.

You are the best rock cover bass player out there, hands down...You are always as accurate as it gets, and this time doing a signature picking-style bassline with lots of sixteens just with your fingers, well, that is unparalleled!. However the 16th note run at the end of each chorus has not been played 100% accurately since originaly there are plain sixteens there, all the way down! Just classic, picking-style Bob Daisley!
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 7 лет назад
Thanks, very nice of you to say. And, yes, often, when I cover something by a pick-style player, I have to take liberties in order to mimic what they are doing and I will always state that in the text area beneath the video. Good ear.
@markopem
@markopem 7 лет назад
I didn't actually read the intro text so my observation was needless. Again, very thorough analysis of the bassline and very nicely put into words. Your finger 3-plet interpretation of this bursting 16-note run is capturing greatly the Bob Daisley feel, though.

I remember covering this with my band when I was 16 years old, you play it more correctly than I did, I'm sure, Troy. But good as this is, I'm afraid linking to Ellie's Limelight cover has resulted in you being upstaged, because that put a huge smile on my face!
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 7 лет назад
We all played things a little differently when we were 16, didn't we? I'm all for being upstaged for the right reasons and Ellie is a great kid, very sweet, humble, and talented. She and her Mother were so friendly and incredibly down to earth...and that smile!

Killer Troy. I think you pissed off the RU-vid police. This is ridiculous if they put a strike against you that is crazy because I see other people doing this song and it is still up. Maybe they have a crappy jealous bass player that works there ...lol. Keep up the posting your an amazing player and a great teacher . ✌🏻

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I avoid covering Ozzy stuff...always a headache, but I've got the system down now. They'll knock it down in a couple of days and give me a strike and then I'll beat that and it should be good for a while. Thanks a lot.

Nicely done. Using a pick he probably lightly palm mutes all those A's. I do the something different to "mute" them. I do it with my right hand by the way i pluck the strings. Easiest way to explain it is I play it heavy handed if that makes sense. Seems to make the notes a little punchier. Bob had a habit of doubling the high notes, octaves, etc. I can easily play double root notes with a single high but he does the opposite. Something I would guess is easier to do with a pick. I had to develop a different way of fingering to get those double highs in. This was my audition piece for the band I'm in now. I had 2 days to learn it and perform it live with the band without any benefit of having met or even played with my band before hand. I'm happy to say I landed the gig. Here's a video of us from that night. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for always posting clear precise covers of great songs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-18xXAkNwNY4.html

I remember when I was first learning Freewill and the solo section stretched before me like an impassable landscape. It's not. It's 6 sections (I think). Just tackle them one at a time and then string them together. For the parts that you can't play exact, make up something as close as you can to what you're hearing.

@@TJH3113 yeah trust me I understand it is quite hard to get a good tone out of a lot of active basses. At least in my opinion. My father use to play a lakland skyline 55-02. He plays in a classic rock cover band so I was talking to him about how he needs to fix his tone, bright and tingy does not sound very good. But I turned him onto my 1972 p bass (for a classic thumpy tone) and turned him onto my geddy lee jazz bass for those more aggressive sounding tones. I am quite fond of the geddy lee bass cause it resembles your tone. He has not looked back since though lol.

Are you chewing gum during this song? If so, I would advise against it. I chipped a tooth while playing bass and chewing gum. True story.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 4 года назад
Probably. That must have been some hard gum!
@BladeJones
@BladeJones 4 года назад
@@TJH3113 No. Actually it was just 2 or 3 sticks of Trident. Bubble gum flavor to be specific. More like a hard song! I think I was playing the verse section of "Make That Move" by Shalamar when the accident happened.
@cory2335
@cory2335 5 лет назад
Really well done. What tabs are you playing @ 1:20 during the 16th notes? The rest of the song is fairly simple, but I'm struggling with this section. The tabs I've been using are using the ADG strings on the second and third fret and I just move across 3 strings that quickly.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 5 лет назад
I'm playing, what I call, triplets - two quick G notes followed by the open E, then two quick A notes and an open E, and two quick G notes followed by a slice down from the 12th fret E. I think I wrote a bit about the part in the text beneath the video.
@cory2335
@cory2335 5 лет назад
@@TJH3113 Ah, I see. The tabs I was reading for it were playing a different note set, so I wasn't sure. I'm struggling at that part since I'm plucking. That many 16ths at a 144 tempo is no joke. I may try to switch to this and leave the old tabs alone.

I swore he was playing it using his fingers. I saw him up close with Gary Moore (RIP) at that shithole Saratoga Losers (Winners) in 1987 I believe, and yeah he was using a pick.. But damn I swore he used his fingers and no pick with Ozzy.. Learned something new.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 7 лет назад
Yeah, I remember when Blizzard of Oz came out, trying to learn some of the stuff on the, Crazy Train, I Don't Know...and it seemed pretty straight forward until he'd come put with these incredible fast bursts. His sound is much fatter than most pick players.

Bob Daisley's body of work is so extensive. I hope one day you can get around to some of his work with Gary Moore. Thank you for this wonderful Ozzy tune bass cover. I also like Rudy Sarzo, so maybe at some point you can get down with one of his bass lines.
@TJH3113

Yes, it is. Didn't he play with Uriah Heep as well? I like Sarzo as well, especially on the Speak of the Devil album.

Troy, how many calories did you burn playing this?! The only thing that is in normal speed is your gum chewing! ;-) Your expression at ca. 2:20: you look above like "oh no, what did I just do". Whatever it was, I didn't notice. :-)

I am looking for a reliable "I Don't Know" bass cover, but there is nothing solid out there. Would you consider doing it? It is such a great bassline, but I know I am not catching everything.

I'll check it out, but I think he does some really quick picking that I would have to fudge in order to play it finger-style.

Great job!!! I have a question. I covered the same song and mine was blocked due to a copyright claim. How is yours and other cover videos of this song still on RU-vid? I don’t care lol. I love your videos. I am just curious.

@TJH3113 3 года назад
Thank you. Yes, Ozzy's solo stuff is pretty tough to keep up on RU-vid. I have a video in my "Tutorials" playlist on how I go about filing copyright disputes, which is what you need to do to get the video back up. Let me know if you have any problem figuring it out.
