Welcome to my channel: / stanshappyhour
As lockdown is keeping us away from canals, we thought we'd make some films with the dogs exploring parks near to us. This is the first one - about one of my favourite parks, Brandon Hill in Bristol.
I used to be an 80s music popstar, now I'm a waterways enthusiast, with a thing for canal boats, canal boat holidays, canal walks, river walks and discovering the gorgeous English countryside.
Thirty years ago, I was in the band The Housemartins, with my talented friends Paul Heaton, Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and Hugh Whittaker. We had chart success with songs like Happy Hour, Caravan of Love, Build and Me And The Farmer.
But that was then. These days, my happy hours consist of family time - and making films about the UK's amazing waterways. Either on foot or at the tiller of a narrowboat. I love canals, canal boats and canal boat holidays, making films about my time on or near the water. I also love to take English countryside walks alongside rivers and canals.
Usually with my mini schnauzer Mabel and new havanese puppy Rufus. I talk sometimes, Mabel and Rufus don't. But we always have fun and we'd love you to join us - just hit the SUBSCRIBE button (please!)

A nice wander with a sprinkle of interesting history from occasional research. Maybe a map so other less Cool Dudes can visit in normal times? Especially when able to travel further afield than Brizzle. 👍

Hi Stan, lovely video as always. Two more historical facts!! St. Brendans school, before it moved to Brislington, late 50's, early 60's was in Berkeley Square, strange fact. The playground was on the roof!! Secondly, local schools often had pupil 'confrontations'. I was at Bristol Cathedral School in the 60's, and twice I recall going to Brandon Hill on a lunchtime for a planned confrontation with QEH. As usual nothing happened, just a flexing of muscles!! Please keep these videos coming. Steve Williamson

Cheers, and thanks for the info. I remember those confrontations too. My school in Brum had similar stuff ... sigh. The good old days. hehe

A thoroughly enjoyable video, Stan! The park was very nice, and the "history lessons" really added a lot. The little things, like the council sign stating exactly what is and is not permitted, are gems -- you can tell so much about a place and a culture from such things (don't worry -- I know not *all* Brits are clipboard Nazis). It was also nice to see the streets and cafes! Do keep at it -- such a wonderful remedy for cabin fever!

Try the 'Northern Slopes', south of Bristol ❤ It isn't far from Victoria Park, and there are three of them. The first is woodland, with a path. The second has beautiful views of Bristol. The third has an even better view of Bristol! I love your videos ❤

Nice one! I'm often found, mooching around there. And the walk down ze steps can take you through to Marksbury Road green - there are two of them, where the 'Malago River' runs through. Beautiful and tranquil ❤

I'm so glad you decided to go ahead with this series, Stan & Mike. Thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing first edition. It was surprising to hear that barbecues are allowed as so many places don't allow them. When visiting a park in Memphis, Tennessee I was surprised and impressed to notice that every picnic bench had a metal barbecue next to it. We didn't use it as we'd taken a picnic, but if I should ever return I shall take advantage of Memphis's reputation for great barbecue and cook some up. Have a great week (y'all) 😎 Looking forward to your next video. Off for a quick (snowy) walk round my local park now.
@StansHappyHour
@StansHappyHour 3 года назад
Now that sounds good - having metal bbq bits. There are a couple of places like that here in Bristol (which will hopefully make their way into future films, now you get me thinking about them..) Enjoy your snowy walk

That was really lovely. I am glad I love the fact that archery and throwing spears is allowed. Missiles are not. I mean, fair enough. If you go on a hunt - do it properly. I really enjoyed the research bits. And the feast at the end. You should do that every time. Not only saying that you are going to have a cup of coffee and a cake. Also sharing it with us. It is a more satisfying ending. Like in Asterix.

Wonderful first edition of Bark Life - thanks so much! It was an amazing break to watch you, Mable and Rufus amble around the park on such a lovely, sunny day (especially since it's it's -8 right now in Toronto, -12 with the wind chill). Loved the calm and relaxing music and the gorgeous shots of the trees, waterfall, and lush green lawns - I miss that! The gothic door was a nice surprise, but I'm a little sad I can't throw a javelin without permission, if I ever come to visit. Thanks also for the snack review. Sweets and a hot chocolate are our favourite things about going for hikes, too. Looking forward to your next edition.

So glad the coffee and cake spot has made it into your Bark Life videos too. My wife and I spend our time cruising around the country on our narrowboat, sampling all the tea shops and cafes that we find. Its one of our favourite pass-times after boating. Until the pandemic put a stop to it. Takeaways aren't really the same. But I'm so glad you mentioned your Cafe Society column, as I've found it online. Living on a boat we can't get Bristol Life delivered so I'll have to google it each time. Hey, maybe you could turn Cafe Society into a Channel too?
@StansHappyHour
@StansHappyHour 3 года назад
Can't beat a coffee stop. Sigh. Your life afloat sounds idyllic. But. Like you say, bit difficult to feel the love these days. Also .. do like your idea of Cafe Society sneaking into Barklife films... have to have a think about that

Loved your park video! Everything you do is such excellent quality. The park is beautiful. The filming, music and editing seems perfect. I enjoyed the research you shared. (Thank you for taking the time to do that.) My labrador is a food thief. I have to watch her constantly, too. When I'm home in CA, my dog and I hike Empire Mine in Grass Valley and always treat ourselves to an outdoor lunch at favorite local restaurant. So I like that you guys treat yourselves to a pastry and coffee after boating or hiking. But, here in Wisconsin (I'm here caring for my elder dad) it is -6 degrees and I don't care to venture out. So, I live vicariously through your splendid videos. And after the pandemic, I intend to travel. England first, as I love all things British!
@StansHappyHour

Hope Mabel did not get sick. Both dogs are so sweet. I so enjoy learning more about your country. I knew nothing about Brandon Hill. So thank you for choosing this amazing park. I'm reading about it online. I learned its home to native trees, frogs, butterflies, ox-eyed daisies and bull finches, to name a few. You have opened up my world in your joyous way, as you always do.

Kinda uncanny because I thought about suggesting you should proceed straight to Brandon Hill in the comments of your last vlog when you started the idea about "Barklife". I spent many a Happy Hour up there in the mid 80´s. I even did my own bit of research on google maps and noticed that the Cabot Tower was closed at the moment. Then I planned for you to make your way up through Meridian Vale (I lived there for a short while). Taking a detour through Birdcage Walk and further on up to the Clifton Observatory ...don´t know if Mabel & Rufus would be allowed into the Camera Obscura though :)
