We look at and purchase a loaded C5 Corvette from the original owner which has been sitting parked in a garage for many, many years and attempt to get it running. There are three parts to this series, check them out!!
Hard start was probably all the leftover old gas. Modern gas just goes to crap if it sits in something for that long. Looks like you got an awesome deal. Congrats.
I believe you are spot on with the old varnished gas. Filled it full w fresh non ethanol after emptying tanks and has cleared up nicely! Thanks for the comment and view!!
Car detailer here I would not recommend using even a car wash brush can scratch your paint and lead to damage.I highly recommend using microfiber cloths👍
Thanks Nico! I will consider that. Old habits die hard. I see your point. We get busy detailing the paint in part 2, coming up this week!!! Stay tuned!
That’s a great deal, 6 speed C5 w/ LS1 is a damn bulletproof platform, fun street car, all kinds of mods available, suitable for drag strip and/or road course work.
@@steven3517 not a huge fan of the auto trans vettes until the C8- but the autos have an allure as well (esp if you put a stall converter on) my wife has never driven my C5Z b/c she can’t drive stick!! It may sound weird….but I’d rather have an auto trans Camaro than Vette. I have no idea why.🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@MS-mr4zm I get that Id prefer a manual myself but Id also probably get in more trouble too lol, I don't know about stall convertors I'll look it up.. I prefer vettes but camaros are cool too,
You are SO lucky. I wish I could find a Corvette for $6k that looks as god as that car. If I was lucky, maybe I might find a crappy 80's Corvette for that price.
The fuel turns into syrup over time in the fuel lines and injectors from sitting. Motor just wasn’t getting enough fuel , should clear up over time with fresh fuel and Techron treatment. You scored a hell of a deal! Good luck. 👌🏻
Electronics gonna be the concern- bet the battery dripped acid on the ECM but not always cause damage, these cars have some electronic gremlins but pretty much everything that can come up has been addressed by some forum member or RU-vidr in great detail lol
That's what I am hearing Mike. No noticeable scratches and we did buff the entire car. With the advice, we'll go microfiber from now on. Thanks for the interest and view!
Congratulations on rescuing this C5! Ditto on never washing with a brush! But you may have have gotten lucky & not scratched it too much with the soft brush. In the future, use separate microfiber cloths for each body panel. A good polishing will remove the fine scratches & swirl marks, followed by a good wax or ceramic job & you’re good to go.
I bought a white C5 that had been sitting 4 yrs in a yard. (Been watching it) Asked a few times and he finally agreed to sell it. Got it for $7k. Battery and fresh fuel and she started right up. Awesome find! Congratulations
c6 shifter.....i doubt the old lady was the original owner but a nice find for 6k.......i just brought a nice 98 convertible with a new top, wheels, tires, harmonic balancer, stereo, seats, compressor for 10k....previous owner had 6k worth of reciepts in the last 2 years.
Nice Find, Robert!!! I do believe her husband might have had the modification of the shifter done. I did not ask. I was just thrilled to see it! Thanks for the interest.
Any modern car that's been setting that long you can pretty well bet the fuel pump is done for even if it starts its not going to last long so pump filters and flush the lines is standard practice and if you can find a local shop to clean the injectors it would be a good idea.
What a terrific find and for about $6k with some needed TLC this was a steal. Love the C5 and most likely be my retirement present in about 4 years. Saw your part 2 and great content. New subscriber here.
Stephen, many thanks!!! Loving the C5 here! We'll be back with an update soon. Appreciate your interest, views and welcome as a new subscriber!! Best of luck with your C5 search. Many nice ones out there.
Many comments about that. It's a very soft and old car wash brush. I suspect there is a better chance of scratches with it, but I have not seen any. A microfiber wash mitt would probabally be best! Thanks for the interest!
@@windycitywarrior71 Yea I am taking a beating for using that car wash brush! No scratches and I did buff the whole car after too. Got lucky and have tossed the brush away! :) On to bigger and better wash practices!
Wow! I wish my C5 was in the shape that one is. Mine was so rough when I bought it last year. It's getting better though. That interior though! Good lord. I have sport seats in mine, but they are SHOT.
Great video, despite the unnecessary political jab. For a moment, I wondered if this was my '00 that I sold back in '03. Always wondered what happened to that car.
Thanks for the comment @techvette. And yes, the snarky comment. I appreciate all sides of the aisle and like to have a welcoming channel. Just had a moment is all.
Flood mode-hold the pedal down then turn the key and let it go like that then let off the gas and it will start up from being flooded. Needs a fuel filter prob from sitting for that long and having shitty gas
Yes, unsure what the starting issue was flooded or not, most likely something not performing correctly in the injection I suspect from sitting. Seemed it was starving for fuel especially at idle. We have since installed a new NAPA Gold (Wix) inline fuel filter under the car which is fitted with quick-connects. Blowing through the old one once removed black gunk came out of it. Looked to be the original.
Its fuel injection. No flooding of fuel. Evidently you both are clueless on how fuel injection. And the rotors NOT rusty proves it was driven recently. Even if it is dirty.
@@darrinwatts9229 The car was not flooded as it might be with a carburation setup (excessive puddled fuel) however with EFI, if an injector sticks or the spray pattern is irregular, EFI motors can indeed "flood". However, I don't feel flooding is the case. If an EFI "flood" opening the throttle body to allow full air flow will indeed help an overly fueled car to clear even if it is EFI. IT appears that the initial issue was lack of fuel as there was no excessive black exhaust output upon starting which would be the case if it was excessive fuel.
Ha, every car deserves a fresh battery, is is the least we can do! Been busy detailing. Part two reveal coming this week!!! Thanks for your interest, Jim!!
You already took the fun out of this video when you refused to tell us how much you paid for this vette. Such a shame! Why does it have to be a secret?
@@classicperformance All I saw was you taking money out of the bank. You said nothing about how much you paid for. Can you give me a clue where to look? Thanks.
@@classicperformance Thank you so much. Now, I remember you talked about the price in the end. I think you're smart not to negotiate because that's a really good price. You don't want to appear to be greedy. What if it's at $10K, would you negotiate? I would. What guides do you follow to know what price is fair? Thank you.
I would have been concerned if the car was sitting outside. a pretty dry garage it appeared so just hit the key after some fuel system treatments and a new fuel filter. Not even a puff of smoke from the exhaust. Since, I have put about 1,500 miles on the car and no engine or fuel system issues whatsoever and no oil consumption. A win!
Hella good find adult owned by the original owner. All stock and unmodded for a steal of a price . Win 🏆.Nice thing is you grabbed it before the used car nightmare were experiencing right now.
@@classicperformance mine is a 2002 c5 I bought in November last year with 46k miles for $17,000 owned by old people...all black leather interior and stock
@@Michael-cr2rn excellent! And a very fair price too!! Mine needs an AC compressor, headlight motors and lots of small stuff I am working through. Nothing major however.
@@classicperformance if you have codes for the TC or you lose brake lights or rear hazards and you have good fuses, bulbs and brake switch.....unbelievable, but check your hazard switch....just did this
absolutely nothing wrong with it per manufacturer as well as language for fuel in the original owner's manual. It's just more than a 5.7 LS motor. They love 87. Non-ethanol 87 is the only offering at QT. I'd rather have non-ethanol 87 than ethanol 92. Appreciate your interest.
Every now and then a blind squirrel will get a nut. Ya just have to keep your eyes open and and be quick with some luck on your side! Appreciate you interest, Big J!
Yes, that is spec per GM and oct above 87 provides "enhanced performance" per owners manual. There are other stations that have non-ethanol at higher octane with I use.
I'm usually not this lucky, The car did need a lot of minor things repaired, basically the full list of everything that goes wrong with a C5 from headlight motors, seat bushings, turn signal flasher, DRL sockets, HVAC backlights AC compressor, etc.
John, I would rather put 87 non-ethanol in than ethanol 90. The ECU and knock sensors allow for 87 octane in a C5 perfectly fine. I have since used marine non-ethanol 90 which is as high as we can get here. Thanks for the view and interest.
@@johngomillion4872 I liked those LS Camaros too with 6-speed. We had them as Highway Patrol cars here at that time, marked and unmarked! I was always on the lookout for Camaros.
Graham, yes indeed and we are going to fix her up to like showroom new condition. Subscribe and stay tuned for part two! She'll need new rear tires for sure so we might have to let these old worn Michelins go up in a plume of smoke. What do you think? --appreciate your interest! CP
Almost sounds too good to be true but what a great find. I am looking for an older Corvette myself I've always wanted one and I will have one hopefully I can find a barn find like that thank you for sharing. Joe Dirt West Rim Arizona
enjoyed the video, and think a C5 is a good choice for a specialty used car, because I also bought a used one. One thing I would do differently from the content creator is to hold off on the High Milage Oil. . It is marketed in response to how people now generally keep their cars longer, so it should sell well, but the true issue here is not the milage, it's the oil seals. High Milage Oil has an additive package to slightly swell worn seals, and some old cars might have worn seals, but if your seals are fine, and with modern oils with proper care they should be. With High Milage oil, you have just chemically treated every oil seal to now be slightly outside of the correct original design size.. And any oil seal should preform better and last longer, in the size it was designed to be. There is a consumer help line offered on every Mobil ! container , and when I asked about high milage oil for my high milage car, the first question I was asked was if I had any oil leaks. I said I did not, they said I didn't need high milage oil. I had called because the High milage container lacked the Dextos symbol that is kind of a guideline for correct Corvette oil, but was checking if the high milage additive package was still an old style that matched the LS1 better than modern regular Mobil 1. It didn't , they had moved on. I also asked about fuel saving mobil !, which would not be an opimum C5 oil choice because it is designed for modern valve trains, not an LS 1 valve train.
How many miles on your C-5? I bought a 2004 C-5 last year with about 45k miles, commemorative edition . I love it, runs great. Good luck with yours, looks like you got a great deal.
Hi I have the same car sitting in my garage for about 9 years (30k miles) and with this process I had 3 main questions to get the car running. Did you (or do you recommend) siphoning any existing fuel that was already in the tank before you add the new stuff? And did you change the oil before you started the car? And also roughly how many times did you turn the engine before it started idling on its own? I enjoyed the series btw and it would be great if you could help me out with these questions or any other recommendations, Thanks ( also do you think the convertible top will still work after 9 years?)
The car had very little fuel in it so I diluted it with fresh non-ethanol, fresh battery, checked all the fluids and considering it has always had spec Mobile 1 synthetic, and did not look too bad, I left it all alone. The starting trial was about as long as you saw in the video. If your car has a lot of fuel, it would be worth getting it out if possible. I also ran several tank fulls of Chevron Techron through it and did so with heavy dose upon first filling with 10 gal of fuel. Best of luck!!
@@classicperformance WELL worth the effort ! I’m sure she would have loved to have been still rolling such a pretty car around but realized it was time to let it go. Rare that she drove a 6 speed !!! Most want nothing to do with ‘em.
It was just dumb luck and you gotta move quick. It's been a fun project and a great car! See the rest of our videos on the C5. You will be amazed at the miles per gallon it gets.
Great video with TONS of tips, thanks! I've commented on another video of yours in this series. But I wanted your thoughts specifically on the Walmart battery. I bought an '03 AT coupe about 3 months ago with a 3 year old Red Top Optima in it from the previous owner. I took 2 days to drive it from Nebraska to Montana with no trouble. After getting here, I used the car for repeated short trips while doing some work on it. I eventually got the dreaded 1214 code for the EBCM and found out one possible cause apart from the module was an insufficiently charged battery, so I investigated that first. Long story short, I've replaced the tensioner pulley, serpentine belt, battery and finally the alternator. I just wanted to eliminate a bad battery as the culprit so I got a cheap Walmart Everstart battery after watching this. The charging system now seems to be working properly (the alternator may be overcharging, I'll have to wait and see; and the 1214 code is still there) but I wondered if you ever fill your Walmart batteries with distilled water. How often do you check that and how often do you replace those batteries?
Homer, thanks for your continued interest and question. Around the year 2001, I started buying Everstart batteries exclusively because it's easy and there is a wide selection of options being sizes and performance/waranty from "economy" to "Maxx" and they represent good value. I bought an economy 22 years ago for an old MGB I picked up and paid $39 for it at Wal-Mart. It lasted just over 10 years. Probabally have bought 20 batteries there since then. I currently have 10 batteries/vehicles with them including a lawn mower. They will last 5 years. But, very often many will go 7-8 years and I currently have a larger high CCA Maxx at 10 years of age. The one thing with lead acid batteries in a C5 is to assure there is no leakage from it as it will damage the wiring harness below and associated components. A battery mat is a good idea. Best of luck with your car! I have loved mine!
@@thehomer5913 I have not, GM used battery wraps quite a bit in years past. I am unsure of the benefits, but it won't hurt and is an extra layer of protection.

Darrin, if you noticed we put "barn find" in double quotations. In the english language this suggests it is not really a barn. Double quotations suggest irony or is used to identify words used as words instead of for their original meaning. We know it is not a barn and that is why the title is done that way to be clear and let the viewer know we did not mean an actual barn. Formal english language and writing education in mind, will discount your comment. We appreciate your interest and view.
