I’ve worked as a main dealer tech with VW & Audi since 1997. The Rallye was rare even then, in fact I only worked on 1… it was during a time when VW & Audi were making really special things, G40 Polo’s, Audi/Porsche RS2’s, Mk3 Golf colour concept GTI’s, harlequin’s & The Corrado, the list is almost endless & I’m glad I started my career when I did… nothing is special anymore, modern cars are soulless with no character… love your videos Jonny, thank you 😊
I ran a Polo G40 for about 4 years, 35 miles each way to work. Great little car, quick and economical, although the brakes could be a bit iffy in the wet.
Love it. My only comment would be to correct you on the Golf Limited (sorry!) The 16v G60 Limited was the most powerful VW made up until the R32, there were 71, and most went to vw personnel. Built on 5 door body shells they were all black I believe, ran small bumpers and had signature blue stripe on the grille (and an offset VW Motorsport emblem)
Epic find, Jonny. Always loved Rallye Golfs. I think the red Mk2 you showed (pictured at your show) is a regular G60. The G60 Limited was a bit of a sleeper: five-door shell, small bumpers, single headlight grille with a black VW roundel and a nice little Volkswagen Motorsport badge with matching pinstripe. I believe the earlier ones were finished in metallic graphite grey and the later ones in metallic black. I seem to recall they with came with BBS RM split-rims. Last time I saw one for sale it was going for about £60,000. A lot of money but worth it IMO.
Jonny, great channel and I look forward to each instalment. Just to help you with your Mk2 Golf nomenclature: “Golf G60” (LHD FWD, not officially imported to the UK, and the red car you had at your event), “Golf Rallye” (as depicted in your video, it’s not a G60 Rallye), and finally the “Golf G60 Limited” (5 door shell, synchro, all Schwartz metallic, LHD, 70 built, 16v G60 motor). I hope I recall the details after a 30 year hiatus.
That’s awesome, looks to be in rather good nick too, interior looks almost brand new. The German temporary plates expired in 2001 (06/07/01 to be exact as the plates say), so it must’ve basically sat for 20 years. Coincidentally I think 2001 was the last time those wheels looked cool!
I was at ( the now long gone ) McMillans VW in Bolton doing my work experience from school when the first G60,s came through and one of the sales lads took me out. I was 15 and it is ingrained as a very good day in my crazy car life. Another brilliant film Johnathan thank you for the memories pal xx
Johnny there’s a clear need here for Late brake/S&S branded car covers. Sell them for merch and bring them on carchaeology trips and give them to those in need. You’ll extend the life of so many deserving motors!
Love it. I have a bare engine block for one of these in my garage along with a Corrado G60 project I’ve been slowly restoring. Rebuilt the engine and the G-Lader myself. Hopefully see the road next summer.
Note to self Jonny, take tools and a full car cleaning kit on your future barn finds, you mentioned a beetle in a field ! I'd forgotten about that video I watched yesterday 🤣
I remember seeing these back in the early 2000’s when I started getting into cars, and I wanted one so much! Love the blown arches, and the supercharged engine. It’d be a real pocket rocket now, not quick by todays standards, but still offering that “analogue” driving experience
Definitely a bonus! I had 2x 4WD Mk2 Syncros in the 90s, converted one with an 8v GTI engine and 1 with a 16v GTI engine... then I spent my house deposit on a Mk3 VR6 2.9 Syncro.... Now I run around in a Mk5 TDi 4Motion, so my 4th 4WD Golf... love em :)
I have a mk 2 golf syncro, small bumpered carburettored that has been sat for years. Its really good to see you do something on a golf, just thought I'd let you know
Had a Mark 2 Golf GTI in Tornado Red from new in 1986 (replaced a Polar White Astra GTE that was written off). Absolutely loved it - it just felt so solid and so much feedback driving it compared to the Astra. Sold it to my brother in law after a couple of years and got a new 205Gti. That rattled more after just 4 weeks than the Golf ever did. One car that I wished I could have kept - happy memories. Loved the G60 Rallye at the time but financial circumstances meant it was way out of my league. Think that the grey really suits the muscular shape of the car. Just a shame about the wheels...... Keep on doing what you're doing Jonny - these finds are getting even more incredible. Best channel on You Tube.
I have loved these ever since I've serviced the gearbox for one. I have never actually seen one in person, but getting told "that gearbox is for a supercharged AWD Golf" was enough to get me interested. Absolutely awesome machine
Had one of these in the early 2000s for 4 years as my daily. Loved it. It was a money pit and sucked up all my wages but enjoyed every minute of owning it. The only car I’ve ever regretted selling too. Long live the G60 Rallye. 🫡
I had a normal G60 in the mid 90's, probably the best car I've ever owned and still regret selling in favour of a VR6, but hey when your 25 you need newer hotter faster wheels all the time
G60, I never got around to owning one, but I had 3 X 92 polo g40s and an 89 g40, all bought crashed, in my french department (46) at one point I owned all but 2 they ever sold there. The handling was erratic, huge lift off understeer mixed with the odd bit of snap oversteer as the chassis was too flexible. I fitted 6 point cages and strut tie bars to mine to solve the issue. Huge fun.
My mates dad bought one of these but got rid of it for a golf country which was even cooler especially seeing it ploughing through 3 foot of snow in the middle of a typical German winter whiteout when our school bus got stuck.
Nice find. As a bit of info, the German plate on that car is used for driving vehicles that are being exported / moved whilst no longer being registered. It was exported from Göppingen in Germany sometime in July 2001. After the 06.07.2001 that number plate was no longer legal.
Thank you, was about to comment on that topic, too. Actually this licence plate was a Temporary registration valid for a maximum of 5 days. Usually these are only used for transport within Germany. Should have used an export plate, which is for driving the car into another country without being re-registered in Germany. So the car is stored there for about 21 years now.
They were rare when they came out. Only 5000 made for homogolation. I wanted one so much in the 90's and there were plenty for sale at the time across Europe. I could have got one for £7000, but it was a struggle to raise the money. I also was a little concerned about driving a left hand drive vehicle in the UK. How daft was I? We have lived in France for sixteen years and have left and right hand drive cars here and have often driven lhd in the UK. I imagine there can't be too many of them left on the road now, but they go for a lot of money. A fabulous car.
A mk2 Rallye in nice condition is worth upwards of £30,000 now. These are a seriously collectable car. I hope it eventually ends up in the hands of someone who will look after it, restore it and cherish it. It's one of my personal dream cars to have one day.
100 made wow, i do remember them about back in the day. When I had my Daihatsu Charade GTti. Jonny please find one if these Daihatsu's these are nice and rare rally bred beasts that people need to know about. 😉
Now that is a great car ! I still have the 86 Golf GTI my Dad bought brand new and it's a awesome car to drive ! I put a 2.0L bottom end in to give it a bit more.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Thanks Johnny, My Dad drove it, I drove it, my little brother drove it and I have it back now. Rebuilt everything just needs a paint job. It lives the garage live in Northern California. Cheers !
:o What a car! Proper Unicorn levels of car now tbh. I used to go to GTI international and loads of VAG shows back in the day and to see one then was rare. Usually, you saw other heavily modified MK2's running a Rallye bodykit with a 20v turbo lump or something. This is a special car!
Wow super rare and super cool I'd buy that yesterday.... Tell. Him to invest in a dust sheet for god sake lol... That would look fresh as with 700 quid deep detail
THANX Jonny for getting the bird poop off that Gorgeous Rally Golf. My OCD was in overdrive when I saw the state of it 🙈🤣 I have a spare car cover they are welcome to have FOC 👍
I love these. I had an Integrale 88 8valve in the 90's and my friend had one of these. He was a big vw fan and even had an Oettinger 130bhp diesel Golf 2. Those are probably even rearer than this Rallye Golf. Thank you Jonny for giving us these blasts of the past, for free non the less, here on You Tube. God bless, and much love from Norway!
@@TheLateBrakeShow I might be able to get you in contact with the guy with the rallye Golf. He’s a character for sure. But also the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. He has been in the car business for his whole life. If you are planning to come here let me know so I can put you two in contact. God bless you Jonny.
Had swallows in my old barn, one of the cars got covered but doesn't appear to damage paint unlike seagulls etc washed the car they favored after 8 years and it looked like new.
When I was kid there was a garage near me and one of these used to sit outside everyday. I was once there with my dad and got to sit in the passenger seat while it moved about 10 metres, such a cool car. I've heard it's still at said garage.
Definitely my favourite Golf of all, probably because it is one of the Weirdest (a common theme with my automotive tastes) and the fact it is basically a quattro with a hatchback. They look really smart, if I ever get the money, would love to find an original UK car, preferably unmolested...
For me 'peak Mk2 Golf' is the Golf Country, I see a couple of them in the mountainous part of Central Bosnia near a holiday home and they are both in great condition. VWs but finished off in Graz Austria .
Best find yet! As an ex owner oc a g40 the rallye has long been at the top of my want list! I do feel slighty rude though as a big VW fan (read nerd)i feel i should point out that @ 6:18 the red Mk2 Golf is not a limited but a regular G60. Firstly the G-Limited as it was called was only available in the 5 door shell plus it was never sold in Tornado red. There is infact an even rarer Rallye. VW motorsport actually built 16 G-limited engined Rallyes, so they were 16V G60 instead of the regular 8V. One if the 16V G60 Rallyes is a proper MK2 halo.....
@@RichN22 I first thought it was way too expensive, but with only 71 and prices of E30 M3s and Sierra Cosworths going through the roof it's probably about right for the right person.
As a keen car and wildlife enthusiasts it was good to see the swallows and the rare golf. Hats off to the man for allowing the swallows to nest but should at least cover the car 😊
It's up there with the most desirable Golfs however only 71 x G60 Limiteds were made. All had a supercharged 210bhp engine, leather interior, 4wd! Awesome cars!
What a shame it’s just been shat on wasting away instead of restored and admired by someone like me who bloody loves the mk2 particularly and the G60 even more 😍😁👌🏼
I had one from Alan Day London it was underpowered as it was a 4x4 and to add insult to injury it broke gearbox reversing and got Brocken into for radio!
I was offered a deal on one of these in the early 2000’s. My ‘96 Volvo 850 GLT Estate + £1000!! Knocked it back as I was doing a lot of miles at the time. Crystal ball and a warehouse would have been useful!
Lovely car. What a find. Glad you could bring it back to some semblance of life. It really looks like a Maestro from the front with those oblong lights tho…
@@TheLateBrakeShow totally fine mate. As long as you have working abs or that system can be a mare to get right. Superchargers are a bit of a grenade if miss treated or regular red lined. Obviously parts are expensive too. 😉
THANKS for a look at an amazing version of what started commercial life as a VW Rabbit in the US. THEY were highly regarded, even before the model you found came out.
This is up there with the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II, both late 80s - early 90s icons, left hookers and boxy in design. Abolute god tier hot hatches.
I owned a dragon Green rallye for a week and sold it,they built like a tank but they slow and heavy and don't go around corners that good considering they 4 wheel drive , sold it bought a 91 bright metallic blue mk2 gti which had been converted to g60 and then spent a fortune on it and it made a healthy 285 bhp at the wheels after the rebuild and I loved that car for years until I had kids and sold it ! My old g60 is still alive and is in Ireland, The private plates G8DUB and G7DUB I owned were sold and are on local cars now and they worth a small fortune lol #hindsight
