Ruth McWilliams, experienced barn quilter and co-curator of the St. Lawrence County Barn Quilts exhibit, gives a quick overview of the barn quilt making process from inspiration to installation.

I am assuming you use the yellow frog tape when you have to tape off an area that has already been painted with 3 coats of one color so you don't pull off the paint when removing the tape?

Hello. I just tried my very first barn quilt and the acrylic paint peeled off. It did not adhere to the wood. I was using Liquitex Basic. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Did you use primer on the wood first? If not, I'd start with a couple of coats of primer. If you plan to display the barn quilt outside, it's best to use at least a couple of coats of primer and then 3 coats of paint formulated for exterior use.

Do you use water base exterior paints. Do you use some type of clear coating for weather protection?

Ruth's reply: "The Benjamin Moore Aura exterior paints that I use are called 'waterborne' paints. And I do not put a seal on the barn quilts. There is no need since we use at least 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint which withstand harsh North Country conditions. And if you put a seal on and something happens to the board, then you have to sand it all off rather than just touching up the area. "
