A couple of weeks ago, Mr Kirkwood and I set off for an adventure to the renown and much admired Skomer Island.
Like many other victims before us, we were faced with a cancellation on the day of the trip. This didn’t obstruct our hunger for an adventure. We found so much bird life just around Martin’s Haven on the Pembrokeshire Coast including these marvellous Barn Swallows, linnets, goldfinches, choughs, gannets and even a couple seal pups who had a lot to say!
•
We then went further North in the Welsh countryside along the coast in search of bottle nose dolphins and we were lucky to have multiple encounters.
•
Apart from Predation significantly impacting their reproductive success and population numbers, all other risks are human led.
🚨RISKS for Barn Swallows:
Urbanisation and agricultural development can lead to:
Habitat Loss: Barns and other old structures that once provided perfect nesting spots are being demolished or modernised, reducing available habitats.
🧯Climate Change: Warmer temperatures can alter insect populations and distribution potentially leading to food shortages during critical breeding and migration periods.
•
🙌🏻What can you do!!!🙌🏻
•
🦋🐝🪲Create Insect-friendly Habitats - Let your garden grow wild this summer: Plant native flowers and shrubs that attract a variety of insects, providing a natural food source for barn swallows.
🪺Installing Nesting Platforms provide safe places for barn swallows to build their nests.
🦶🏼Reduce Carbon Footprint: Adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing energy consumption, using renewable energy sources, and minimising waste to help combat climate change.
Pesticide Use: The widespread use of pesticides in agriculture can reduce insect populations and can also lead to poisoning the birds if they consume contaminated insects. You can support and practice organic farming to reduce the use of harmful pesticides. This helps maintain healthy insect.
•
By putting some of these actions into practise, we can create a more supportive environment for barn swallows, helping them to thrive and continue their important role in the ecosystem.
