Here we are again on the first day of full Covid-19 Lockdown (for the second time). So something for you to pass the time and wish you were out travelling. Like all the older videos Sound recording was not permitted. But we hope it doesn't spoil your viewing too much.
We have been having requests for some footage along rarer freight pieces of track. Well this one is quite rare. This footage is from a few of years ago just after the resignalling of North Lincs, Wrawby Jn - Cleethorpes. We start on the Down Cleethorpes Goods at Barnetby crossing over onto the Up Cleethorpes at Barnetby East and continuing on through the photographers haven of Melton Ross on toward the closed station and signal box at Brocklesby before going through Habrough, Stalingborough and Healing to Great Coates where we hang a left to have a trundle around the the Grimsby light Railway. Mind your eyes on the tree branches its a bit overgrown. But a fascinating ride around. This piece of railway is now only normally used for diversions in an emergency. Also note there are two instances of what the industry call "Talking by", that is passing signals at Danger (red) with the verbal authority of the Signaller.
Creating these videos involves many hours of editing, rendering and uploading and takes time and effort and if you wish to support the continued work please feel free to donate via Paypal at

As a relief signalman in that area in the 80's and 90's, I have worked every signalbox which was passed by this loco. Oh, how it has changed, and where is Immingham East box now? Not realised it has gone, although very aware of the re-signalling scheme which took away all the signalling at Barnetby/Wrawby and elsewhere. Used to be busy, 200 + trains per day, Wrawby to Brocklesby Jnc., not so now, and the sterile LED signalling uninteresting. But I am thankful I managed to catch the end of the Railway when it was enjoyable to go to work. Happy times.

One would have thought that the car importers / exporters would use the railway on thier boundarys to move cars on mass, instead of transporter lorrys up and down the M180.

Thanks so much for this video. I've long wanted to see the Light Grimsby line as I've been crossing it going to work for the last 36 years..!! Can't say I've seen more than a handful of trains on it in all that time...

When I was based at Immingham depot in the 1970s the line was double track throughout and used several times a day by Grimsby Trips (9T80). About once a month a ship carrying ilmenite would dock at Immingham and several trips a day were made to Tioxide (Titans) for several days until the mineral had all been transported. There was also daily traffic to Courtaulds factory and occasional traffic to the Ciba factory. Several light engine movements to Grimsby and Cleethorpes also took place.

I signed the whole of that route from 1974 until 1982 when I was a relief driver at Frodingham (Scunthorpe) M.P.D. For a little used line it still appears to be in remarkably good condition apart from the lack of vegetation control. If I remember correctly, the Grimsby and Immingham Electric Tramway used to run alongside this line where the pipelines are now
@peterbrackenbury
@peterbrackenbury 3 года назад
That’s right, the Tramway ran alongside the ‘main line’ from Pyewipe to Immingham. Just before the road over bridge before East Jct the tramway veered off to the left past the bottom of the bridge where it reversed and then ran over the bridge onto Immingham Docks.

Well, here we go to my favorite UK town. Cleethorpes. I am even a GTFC fan and have the new kit. So much more interesting to tell people I’m from Cleethorpes instead of I live in Farmington-yawn. As always, thanks for the video.

Good to see from the drivers perspective, used to signal on the NL line, curious as to the passing signals at danger? Usual axle counters occupied round the corner from marsh jct?
@RailMart
@RailMart 3 года назад
It was a Track Circuit Failure or Axle Counter Failure neither signal could be cleared.

Why was the train going around these tracks? It didn't seem to be there to deliver or load something. Presumably only goods trains run there? Interesting to see these obscure bits of the railway network though.

If the Ulceby Station area goes into engineering, freight uses this route as a back-up to the Immingham Docks. 4 Years ago or so, it saw a train an hour almost for a few days. Great to see, as I live right near it!

All our new stuff will have sound. Its the older stuff from 3 - 4 years ago that was restricted. There will be a mixture of both. Have lots of video to put up, but its a case of time I am afraid.

I was on a special that ran into Grimsby docks and around immingham docks into Ridley sidings about 5 years ago, is Grimsby docks totally out of use now then? The line into it looked very overgrown! Also what loco was you on and what was it doing?

These bends are usually put in to allow for expansion & contraction with temperature changes, without the need for special flexible joints.

AND we got a token! Short video, but packed with good stuff. Sad to have to read that the line to Grimsby DOCKS no longer carries freight. That is a heck of a car park across the tracks from the Renault dealer. Why is it a “light” railway?
@peterbrackenbury
@peterbrackenbury 3 года назад
When originally built the line was a contractors line and used to carry workers and materials for the building of Immingham Docks. Being a contractors line it was only built to ‘light’ standards. When the docks were opened in 1912 the line was upgraded to normal standards but the name ‘light’ has stuck ever since.
