If one is interested in the dancing, the frequent upper-half-body shots are disappointing. One rarely sees the foot work.

William S. That's true. I don't like the camera work in general - the shots are very short and they are constantly changing the angle, which is rather annoying. I can't really focus on the dancing, the video is too chaotic.

Agree. Not sure what the goal of this video is, but I'm guessing it's just to give some kind of ambience of what it was like to dance Gigue during that time period. I'm a ballet dancer, and have to perform Gigue inspired pieces in some ballet variation, which is what brought me here, so it's more interesting for me to see the dancers whole body and feet.

Ditto! This isn't the reconstruction of a lost dance but the destruction of it, chopping it up into visual hamburger. What one comes away with is the sense that Baroue dance is done on pogo sticks. The dancers themselves, as far as we are allowed to see more than their pretty faces, have not fully absorbed the spirit of this dance. This is especially notable in the dancer with the square-cut bodice whose final pose is cramped, angular, and out of touch. Finally, the crepuscular, sepia-toned lighting conveys only old, yellowed varnish, not the movement of life.

it's not a case of it may or may not be, it is music from the mid-baroque period in france. if you listen to actual renaissance music from the renaissance period you'll here a vast difference in sound. don't mistake any old sounding music for renaissance music. the renaissance is a specific period in history, not a generic term for all old things and old music.

because the music and the dance is DEFINITELY baroque. if you have a look in the description, it says the music is by Charles Dieupart who was alive from 1667 to 1740. that is slap bang in the middle of the baroque era. :) the style of the music very much french baroque :)

The music in this video is from Dieupart's Six Harpischord/Violin/Recorder suites. (Bach actually copied down this specific set of music early in his career and drew inspiration from it when writing his own keyboard suites.)

'They' usually use a generic harpsichord in the videos! I don't this for sure, but I speculate that they may be rental props just for the videos, they not wanting to cart their harpsichord around to improbable places. I think they use a better choice harpsichord in the recording studios, which is the audio they are 'lip'synching to in the videos? Just guessing here.

Le photographe n'y est pas du tout ! ce n'est pas le visage, mais les mouvements de tout le corps qui définissent une dance.A refaire en éloigant la caméra pour étendre le plan IT IS A PITY THATA THE CAMERAMAN SEEMS NOT TO KNOW THAT WHAT INTEREST THE SPECTATOR IS NOT THE FACE OR THE TORSO OF THE DANCERS, BUT THE WHOLE BODY AND THE MOUVEMENTS OF THE DANCE ITSELF

I came here to check out my sense that most modern players are playing Bach Gigues at too fast a tempo. Seems I was right - assuming that this is an accurate reconstruction. We should respect the dance that was Bach's inspiration!

A dance is a form of the entire body. The videographer botched this by excluding the lower body frames so much of the time. Flipping camera angles so much made this seem like a bad TV show, continually changing camera angles to "create interest." I hoped to find dancers dancing, not the videographer.

Yes, but look at how many countries have done much worse: China, America, Britain, North Korea, Australia, Germany, Russia, Spain, Portugal, etc. And you haven't refuted the fact that prior to the 19th century, France was not a particularly aggressive or violent nation, especially compared to her neighbors. You can't condemn a country for only a tiny sliver of their history. The history of Germany, however, is almost uniformly violent and brutal. They have always believed they are superior.

It's true the women are thin, but calling them anorexic is a subjective opinion, since many people would disagree with you. I didn't mean to judge your whole character, but it is ALWAYS insulting and rude to call someone very ugly.

Now to be sure, there are many good-hearted Germans and Austrians, and there always have been. But on the whole, the Germanic peoples (including the British) have been exceptionally violent and ruthless, and have had an unshakeable (and completely unfounded) belief in their own superiority.

Why? They have generally, as a country, been much better behaved than countries like Germany, Britain, and America. Yes, France has done many bad things in the past, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, but before that...I would say France was not all that badly behaved. Especially in comparison to her bloodthirsty Spanish, Portuguese and British neighbors.

I'm guessing you're German or Austrian? Look at the history of the Germanic tribes. Brutal, bloodthirsty warfare from their earliest days to modern times. Germany is one of the major players in the ongoing genocide in the Middle East perpetrated by the West. Austria has been fascist since the 1980s, with Jorg Haider and other despots. The only time the Germanic peoples were not violent was when they had no organized nations during the Middle Ages.

It is clearly true that these women are unhealthily skinny...almost anorexic. This is not good. And I don't care what anyone else says, borderline-anorexic women are not attractive. Perhaps my comment about "very ugly" misses the point and perhaps it was even inappropriate, but still...these women look like they are half dead from starvation. Somebody ought to feed them. P.S., grow up and behave like a person...you can't judge somebody's whole character by one superficial comment.
