An immature Barred Owl walks on the ground and perches near eye-level and on the road before flying to another perch where its call echoed into the woods at night.
Barred Owls (Strix varia) are active at night but often begin to call an hour or more before sunset and after sunrise. Like most owls, they’re a lot easier to hear than to see. Listen in the evenings and mornings for this species’ barking “Who cooks for you?” call. You'll find them most often in mature forests near water. Bottomland forests along rivers are prime habitat. They eat amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates and many kinds of small animals like squirrels, chipmunks, mice, voles, rabbits and birds. They hunt by scanning all around for prey with their sharp eyes and ears while watching from an elevated perch.

Today's video was filmed July 16, 2020 at McCormick's Creek State Park in Spencer, Indiana. This was the closest I've ever been to a Barred Owl and it seemed to not mind my presence at all as it flew in and perched remarkably close to me.
