Barrel Cleaning for Air Gun Accuracy (Do you clean your barrel or no?)

I have been putting this video off for a bit because I wanted to reach out to some of the top shooters in the world. I asked a large group of the top shooters in the world if they cleaned their air gun barrels and all of them replied yes! Some said that each of their guns required different cleaning intervals but not one said they never clean their barrels. I know there is for some reason a large group of people who say they never clean barrels, but I for one like my accuracy from my barrels not getting overly dirty. I experience my groups getting away from me when my barrels get dirty and cleaning is the best thing to do.

I do believe cleaning your Barrel definitely helps what doesn't help is the fact that I'm lazy and I wait till the gun start shooting like crap then I clean it

That’s funny only a few days ago I was listening to those four gentlemen sitting around the table and the old man said NO with complete self-assuredness/confidence that you do not need to clean your barrels and while he was saying that I was thinking what if he is wrong? It turns out that he was. He sounded too confident to me. Thanks Moose.

I know this post was a year ago, but I just wanted to thank you for the info. It just makes sense. Recently picked up my first pcp (Barra 1100z.). Couldn’t figure out why my line wasn’t feeding through the barrel. Paused and replayed a couple times and saw your barrel with the shroud was longer at first then shorter than the can. I jumped on that and removed my shroud with the (internal air diffuser?). Boom. Now I have a clean barrel. Again, thank you Moose. Found your name through JC’s channel. AirgunDetectives. -Jas.

I clean when I first get the gun ...then about every 500 to 1000 shots. Awesome job bro!!

I am just getting into airguns after restoring My Dads 1946 Daisy Red Ryder (still a great plinker). Recently saw the video you refer to and asked questions on the GTA forum, and they discourage cleaning unless absolutely necessary. You're talking to a former Marine who cleaned his T/O weapon weekly. Needless to say after watching this video I went out and bought the Patchworm and cleaning patches. Thanks to a fellow Michigander !!!

Yea, there are many people who share bad information. Unfortunately others follow this information blindly and just reshare it. You should always clean the barrel of a new airgun, then clean it when your groups are not as good as they should be, or just start to open up. Every gun is different and slugs will make your barrel dirty quick.

Meaning, I'm shooting at 50 yds plus and I see a large change in group size with more flyers. I'll go up to 25 or 20 and check it there. If it's still wider than normal, I clean the barrel. Patchworm/Ballistol.

I actually asked 68 Whiskey about this and he told me he finds the need to clean FX barrels at ~700 rounds. Watching accuracy is definitely key! As you pointed out

Some airguns require more cleaning then others... My impact mk2 .30 is insanely accurate... best group .34 at 130 yards with unsorted pellets... I can shoot thousands of pellets through it, and still get sub moa groups at 100 yards...(with calm winds) That said the accuracy no doubt improves when I clean the barrel... I have a cricket .25 with its stock LW barrel, and I'm lucky if I get 200 shots beforei notice a serious decline in accuracy...

Being a average shooter. I do not care what others say. I clean my air gun after each use. Just like you would a normal gun. Even if it is just one oil patch after use. Keeps it rust free and lead residue free.

Just asking: What is a "normal" gun. I thought a air rifle is also a normal gun, just a different type of propulsion. 😃

Wow 2 fx guns in a month must be nice. Either your single or your wife is a very supportive lady. I must say my wife is a saint and supporter of my hobbies and she just asked me to teach her how to shoot and perhaps start coming out to some club matches so Iam quite looking forward to it. I agree with you about clean barrel and that it's gonna need a slight leading effect in order for my accuracy to be what I want.

Like any machine, leave it to get dirty and unserviced and it won't perform its best. Any new rifle, give it a good going over, clean and lube - get a tin of cheap pellets through the barrel to run it in. After that periodically you pull out your rifle, lubricate it clean it and care for it. It cost you money, why let it go to waste?

Or you can use s drinking straw to help guide the pstchworm cord past the baffling

I use corrosion X for cheaning the barrel of my airguns. Would you recomend to change to Ballistol?

No brush? Why? I use brushes and many I saw use brushes for ever now with no problems. (Edit: When doing a thorough cleaning I remove the barrel from the block and never damage a o-ring. Sometimes there are some dirt / lead dust going in the o-ring groove so it is a good thing to clean there as well.) A soft brass brush will not do anything to a barrel but remove lead from it. A patch with some oil on it will not remove the lead stuck to the barrel, only the loose particles. Look at how the .22LR guys clean their barrels, even inspect it with a bore scope afterwards to make sure the brush removed all the lead. And then some JB compound.

Not cleaning your barrel is a recipe for rust in the long term. I personally run a couple of patches every 200 rounds in my leshiy. In my dreamline I clean after every tin of 500. In my experience traditionally rifled barrels like lw/cz need to be cleaned more often than stx. What is your opinion on polishing a barrel?

I've only polished one and it was due to a boat load of rust straight from the manufacturer. However I hear many competition shooter that polish most barrels they shoot.
