Man I’m watching your video on correcting self proclaimed experts and wow . The only guy I trust now besides myself is YOU . And by the way I have an M1 Garand that is a 1944 and as far as I know went through two wars then sat under water for three weeks after Hurricane Katrina and then sat in my fathers gun case only soaked in oil for 17 years. I took it and cleaned it up , blasted it and cold blued it and have been shooting it ever since. It does swallow a Forster no-go gauge though. I haven’t field gauged it yet because I don’t have one. I do reload myself but I’ve never reloaded any 39-06 for the Garand. I’ve only shot factory stuff and milsurp stuff so far . I am some primer flattening and ejector bruises on my brass . Would love for you to look at it for me but I know your busy as hell .
Tac, excellent demonstration of re-barreling and head-spacing an M1 Garand. Don't worry about your Alabama accent, I understood everything that you said on your 4-part video. Like another viewer commented, you have given me the confidence to re-barrel my own projects. I would love to go to Gunsmithing school, but there are no decent ones where I live. Thank you kindly, from California, for taking the time to show us all how it's done, and on a budget to boot.
Just wanted to say thanks. I had an Garand rebarreled by the CMP on site at a shoot. Afterward I couldn’t sight the gun in. The rear sight was maxed out of travel and still had to aim 6 inches off to hit center. I sent it in to CMP to look through it and they said the barrel timing was off. Your vid showed me what they were talking about.
thanks for doing this by hand, its helping me learn how to gun Smith for myself. good videos. even if I don't ever change the barrel myself I'm glad I can see all that you put into this.
Great Job! I usually use 2 Starrett Magnetic angle finders instead of the rods. I've had good luck with them. In the process of "correcting" a July 1941. Took forever, but I got a 6-41 barrel for it that measures TE 2 ME 2. The correct long channel stock was the hardest part to source, but it's on the way. Hopefully I'll have it done later this fall.
I wish it was that easy. I installed the receiver on the new barrel and it was about 45 degrees from being in time. Put old barrel back on and it was maybe 20 degrees from being in time. Measured the barrels from the barrel shoulder to the end of the breech and my Criterion barrel is 0.012" longer than take off barrel. Time for the lathe.
This is probably a stupid question, but here goes: Do you just keep twisting until the barrel flat aligns with the rear sight plane, without worrying about barrel torque; is there any risk of overtorque and damaging your receiver?
Great video! I have an M1 I bought in '09 and haven't shot it because I haven't found surplus ammo. Just found some POF ammo but the thing that has always bothered me about it is the front sight is chanted a bit. Doing a lil research I believe it's because the barrel needs to be rotated a bit. Then I would have to check headspace after. Learning a lot from these.
I'm going to the Tanner gun show this weekend in Denver! First time buying an M1 Garand. Do you have any good advice for a first time buyer? I don't want to end up buying something that's gonna blow up in my face or a piece of junk either. So far I've done some basic research. What I've learned: (A completely rebuilt gun with more new parts will be more reliable and safe.) Ask about the guns history and whats been done to it? How many pieces are GI parts if any? Ask if its shooter worthy headspaced correctly and will fire? Is the gas plug adjustable? Check muzzle and throat wear. Drop M2 Ball round down muzzle. Shell shouldn't touch end of muzzle.(or use tool, should be less than 1) Trigger guard stamped or milled? Milled is better. Check corroded metal. Check for stampings types and serial number. Check stock new wood is lighter color for cracks and gouges.
Did you buy or make the receiver wrench? I would love to get the dimensions. I probably could fashion one myself with hack saw & file. The ones that Brownell sells do not look sturdy. Same goes for the barrel vise. To be able to put it in and out without undoing bolts saves a bunch of time. Thank you again.
howdo you assure the barrel goes in the receiver far enough to assure it buts tight against the receiver face and still makes contact with the shoulder inside the receiver? There must be some manufacturing variances even if only a matter of thousands of an inch> Many thanks. Great videos
Thanks for the info. New at barrel and receiver projects. Need to mount an M1 Carbine barrel to a new receiver. Is the Carbine the same or close to the M1 Garand as far as the reaming procedure? and do they make a reamer for the M1 Carbine and if so where can I get one?
How to make this a gun better, first get rid of the stock and replaced it with a hand grip style stock. Make this better. give this gun a new life. Hand grip style stock like the AR 15.
