Barrie Cadogan is one of the finest guitar players in the country.
As a long term friend of The Blues Kitchen, we’ve often discussed the wildly under-rated guitarist Danny Kirwan.
As a member of Fleetwood Mac alongside Peter Green, Danny Kirwans’s playing is criminally over-looked.
Before the Fleetwood Mac line up morphed into the stadium filling band most people are familiar with today, they were arguably the best blues act in Britain in the late 1960’s - Danny Kirwan’s playing was absolutely essential to the sound and soul of the band at that time .
We sit down to discuss Danny Kirwan’s stunning guitar abilities and the band perform a live version of Danny Kirwan & Fleetwood Mac's 'Coming Your Way'
Barrie has put together a line up specifically for this film including:
Bass: Lewis Wharton (Little Barrie)
Drums: Tony Coote (PP Arnold)
Guitar: Joe Hollick (Wolfpeople).

I asked Peter Green in 1997 if he would like to play with Danny again, Peter replied ; " if I could I would have had him on stage with me tonight and everynight" Hi Barrie, I don't know you but I found this as I ve been a Kirwan and Green and kossoff fan since I was 15.(30 years ago😢) Very impressed by your playing and the faithfulness to the Kirwan green line up of your performance. Noticed you did oh well with Jim jones (I ve been a Jim fan since 1989); excellent work🙂👍 I will be researching about you and your work now👍🙂

He's just named the big three for me, Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Paul Kossoff. There's something so earthy, original and real about all three, yet they were different musicians. They all have their own sound, their own style and all three are vastly overlooked. No frill all pure feel and soul. Great version of "Coming Your Way". Thanks for this interview.

All three of the guitarists in the first lineup of Fleetwood Mac, were understated, Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green all equally genius on the guitar, Jeremy Spencer often played percussion instruments when he wasn't playing slide

personally i don't think he died, there's an interview on youtube channel the guitar show of an actor who got to know him, a lot of the stuff in the media about him being a drunk etc, was probably not true imo, but he probably wanted out of the music business after what happened to peter

That was great! Been a lifetime appreciator of the early Fleetwood Mac when a teenager back in the latter part of the 60's. Seems to me that were they still alive, both Danny Kirwan and Peter Green would have appreciated this superb effort to capture the spirit and 'feel' of the original song. Well done to all the musicians present ... ☺

I saw Danny K, with Fleetwood Mac, in Philadelphia, in the spring of 1972 (4/28/1972, Philadelphia, PA, Spectrum - West, Bruce & Laing, Spirit, Fleetwood Mac). I believe, Danny quit the band later that summer, in August I think. He would have been 22 when he left. They were touring in support of their “Bare Trees” album. One of the great Danny songs from the album and the show was “Child of Mine”. Give it a listen and you’ll understand what these two guys are talking about. Further, anyone wanting to hear how Kirwan sounded live, in early 1972, search YT for “Fleetwood Mac Live in Seattle - 1972 (audio only)”.

Danny has moved on but his music will be discovered for many years by the true seekers. I hope one day someone does a really good and true documentary about the early Fleetwood Mac. The Chicago sessions especially. They touched the flame and were a part of it not just influenced by it. Mick Fleetwood said when they first started the sessions the old blues guys were a bit skeptical for awhile until they got into the playing and then they realized these British white guys were the real deal and authentic. Very strange how that works but it does. At the emotional level, the working class Brits experienced many of the same things as some of the black artists such as feeling like second class citizens to the upper class. So I think that comes out in their playing.....the emotion. RIP Danny...your spirit lives on in the music you helped create. Thank you.

Very happy to see this. I have been a Danny Kirwan advocate for 5 years now. Fascinated by his vibrato, the variety of his songwriting, and his musical instincts. And how many have played his parts on "Oh Well" and never heard his name? I recorded a Fleetwood Mac 50th anniversary tribute, all songs from the beginning up to the departure of Jeremy Spencer. "Coming Your Way" was one I recorded, though that predates the inception of this project, and wasn't originally meant to be publicly available. I don't have drums, so the percussion is guitar, and you can occasionally hear that my fingers were getting tired from the previous takes on the bending. But I think it captures some of the spirit of the song. The other Danny songs I recorded were "Dragonfly", "Station Man", and "Although the Sun Is Shining", as well as imitating his lead work on "Oh Well".
@sam19851
@sam19851 6 лет назад
Fell upon this whilst browsing for my Danny Kirwan fix. It's fair to say i have been a nut for the 68-70 Fleetwood Mac bordering on an obsession since i was 16 yrs old, especially Peter AND Danny. I woulf often cover some Peter and especially Danny whilst busking on my travels, knowing full well most of the public probably wouldn't recognise some of the songs i would cover. Danny's guitar work and songwriting were equally powerful. He had such timbré in his playing and you can really tell he was hugely influenced by guys such as Albert King and Django Rheinhart. He could fill you with both joy AND sorrow in a few minutes. I think these guys make a great effort of capturing the mood and atmosphere of Coming Your Way , which is quite often overlooked. I was pleasantly surprised to see an old school friend Liam Hart doing the interview! Keep on keeping on mate. Thanks for the interview.

Boys. Well done. I am a confessed nut for the playing of Danny. As an individual he has his own way but his greatest influence was as part of a single instrument (Green and Kirwan as one) in the Original FM. Really appreciate your performance here. You played real concern for who is the guy. Whilst I admire your wish to respect the privacy of DK, we in the antipodes would really like to see a process not unlike the Splinter Group and how they eased PG back into performance. Can Blues Kitchen maybe run a Crowd Funding deal and get a few pound into old mate's pocket and we might get to see him play again. A joy to read so many other comments pleading for recognition of the guy who held FM together when they really needed it.

John Drum Hi John, I just read your comment and I’m sure you probably know by now that Danny passed away last June. I was a friend of Danny but hadn’t seen him for some years since he’d moved to Holland with his Dutch girlfriend. I knew Danny well for a few years from around ‘95. He was a happy fellow and not homeless as newspaper reports and his obituaries stated. He was living at his mum’s when I met him. Danny wasn’t crazy, he wasn’t an alcoholic, he wasn’t a drug addict... he was none of that when I knew him. He had changed a great deal from his younger days but he was comfortable in his own skin although he didn’t go around telling people who he was.. he was just Danny. A very humble and very funny man. For those who care for Danny and his music I’m happy to share my friendship with this wonderful fellow and the fact that he wasn’t in the terrible state the world believes him to have been in. I didn’t have any real knowledge of Danny’s music when I knew him... he downplayed it all and gave me the impression he was simply a side man for Peter Green. I didn’t realise he’d written so many great songs at all. There’s a million questions I’d love to ask Danny now but while I knew him i respected that he’d had a difficult experience (he told me about the Munich acid spiking incident and it was the first I’d ever heard of it) and I met Peter with him once backstage when he was playing with Snowy White (Peter and Snowy White certainly knew who Danny was). Danny was working (as an actor and extra/model) and under his own name. An incident in LA had necessitated Danny having his face reconstructed so he was all but impossible to recognise from his younger self. When I first saw those pictures of a young Danny I was amazed at how differently he looked. Danny played guitar round my place with me quite a few times, but always in fun and lots of laughing was involved. He was a very ordinary down to earth guy with a really interesting edge. Some have said Danny that was difficult to have a conversation with.. I couldn’t disagree more. We often spoke late into the night or into the next morning. I’d expected I’d bump into Danny sometime further down the line, but sadly it wasn’t to be. Exploring Danny’s music in depth since his passing has really amazed and inspired me. Our friendship was based upon humour, laughter and honesty. I’m so glad I knew this brilliant man. I loved Danny anyway for being Danny... I love him all the more now that I can appreciate the brilliance of his musical legacy. Danny was something else! He wasn’t the man so many thought he was... he was far more interesting than that. And much much funnier. Rest In Peace Danny, you Legend!

Now that Danny has passed, maybe someone could put together a decent collection of his music from across his career and raise some money for mental health clinics or something. Or a tribute album. There are tons of band who would jump at the chance. One thing the really struck me about Danny's work was its sheer variety. Sunny Side and Something Inside of Me from the same guy? Trinity and Dust? A world class songwriter on addition to being a great player.

In other words, Peter Green and Danny Kirwan weren't keen to adopt the "star" stamp that all the others did. They were (are) ordinary folks and preferred to stay that way. What a bizarre choice for this day and age!! And maybe that's why they were so good at playing blues, the music of the common folk. In my mind that's why they are so criminally underrated, they never wanted to join the star system

MasterBluesRockGuitar I was a friend of Danny’s from the mid nineties. Danny was very humble and down to Earth. He didn’t even mention it when he was inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It may have pleased him but not enough to mention it. Danny cared enormously about Peter, he didn’t give a shit about fame. Danny got to see Peter get a lot better and start playing again. I met Peter with Danny backstage at Shepherd’s Bush empire and watched from the wings with Danny as Peter played with Snowy White. Today everyone seems to want to be famous. As you say it’s really refreshing to encounter those who don’t care. Danny was the epitome of that kind of man. Didn’t give a shit.

@@LeonDonnelly23 a shame it didn't get Danny in the mood to jump in...the CDs are nice, but at 55, never got to see the original FM lineup...consider myself damn lucky to have caught Peter when he came to NYC with his Splinter group...always thought, one day, just maybe, the original lineup would go into the studio once more...😢😢😢...one for Peter, Danny, and from a different era/style, Bob Welch..

These guys really showed a real passion for this type music. Wish they could write some new stuff and do it/perform it. Record it today. I think the early Mac is really not given it's due. Future Games and Bare trees were great albums: Kirwan and Welch, great team with the Mcvie's, mick f. Just forgotten because of the huge financial success that came after. The peter green who actually formed the band, gets some recognition, but not like it should.

Vibrato. Early on, in '69, I was talking to anyone who'd listen about Kirwan's vibrato. Seems like only now others are noticing...

I always appreciated him. What one needs to do is simply recognize what parts HE is actually playing, not Peter.
