I've been side by side with them talking about it while I was bat boy for the giants when they use to come down to san Diego.. Barry and my family are real good friends... I use to go to school with tony jr. Use to go over his house every weekend after school on friday in his house in poway... Man I miss those days.. Mr. Tony is a real family man... He use to play ping pong with us in his garage... Drive tony jr and I in his drop top porsche in the canyons ... Miss those days
So if Bonds takes steroids and hits a ton of homers it’s the steroids that made him so good. But if a 220 hitter takes steroids and still hits 220 it’s what? Lack of talent. Bonds belongs in the Hall of Fame along with Joe Jackson Roger Clemons and Pete Rose. Heaven is for the good The Hall of fame is for the great. We can call them cheaters if we like but how many people call us saints ?
This is the Barry I saw. Not the villain that media portrayed him to be. And yes, Tony Gwynn is the best hitter I ever saw. Barry, was the best hitter (with power) I ever saw. If you're a baseball player you know. 🤘🤙
I was never a fan of Bonds until I started working with my son on hitting. The first player I looked up was Bonds. His father pushed him to be great and eventually he himself became the perfectionist. Everything he says about hitting is gospel to me. Wherever my son goes in baseball Bonds is a big part of that journey. He belongs in the Hall imho.
Marty C. you did a great job interviewing Barry. 20-22 yrs ago, Barry seemed on the edge giving interviews, at times he looked sullen and disinterested and ready to jump down a reporters throat but Barry looked very relaxed. We know he took PHD but he is a HOFer. I hope Barry Bonds gets in soon. And RIP Tony Gwynn, man, do I miss that laugh.
@@blakewatson4192 No matter how you feel about the guy as a person, it's impossible to deny what he did on the field. Roids or nit, he was a gifted athlete and feared hitter. How many other players you see get intentionally walked with the bases loaded?
@@crimsontide1980 I don't know him as a person so I don't FEEL anyway first off. My response was then the person didn't watch much baseball cause plenty of hitters were better than Barry ( Albert pujols, tony Gwyn George Brett). Just to name a few. And I never said he wasn't a great player but the roids definitely helped him on the power numbers cause without them he would of never been hr king. Btw it's not not nit. And roids helped him get the walks while bases loaded
@blakewatson4192 Simple mistake, phone doesn't autocorrect, but glad you figured out I meant not, since the word 'nit' gets used a ton in everyday conversations. And absolutely Gwynn was a better pure hitter, but Bonds could do more damage. Steroids definitely improved his bat speed, and turned several what would have been long fly balls into homeruns, but they didn't double his output. We will never know the exact number of how many he would have hit without steroids, but likely would have still hit enough to land in the top 5.
Barry is prob the most misunderstood player. He was never a bad guy (maybe with a little bit ego), but he was always under a lot pressure, plus he's an introvert. As an introvert myself, i totally relate to him. Now, he's content with his life, no more pressure, and you can see he's actually nice guy, who loves to taught others to be better.
How does Steroids effect how far you hit the ball it's all coordination and the ability to see good pitches to hit and those are the traits Bonds had. How can he not be in the hall of fame he is the all time leader in home runs 762 it's absurd.
Bonds, Rose, Sosa, Mac all should be in the HOF. Who didn’t bet who is perfect, who is without sin. Cobb dirty player whitey Ford Kkk Ruth had issues . Very few players didn’t drink or have issues. A lot of them are in the HOF
Rose not . You have no idea what you are talking about. To equate Rose's actions to the antics of others guilty of lesser offenses is absurd. It's not about 'having issues'. You can knowing have a murderer in the Hall and that particular individual's crime no matter how horrific likely doesn't directly threaten the very integrity and foundation of the organized sport he may have happened to have been associated with at one point in his life but having an on or off field player and/or manager involved with gambling on the very sport he is participating in rewarded with the sports very highest honor ? Well, that's unacceptable if you want to ensure that anyone else considering succumbing to similar temptations understands the price to pay
The records Bonds broke while he was on steroids were set by players who were not on steroids. Bonds belongs in the steroids hall of fame, not the baseball Hall of Fame.
Say what you will and bash the man as you may if that’s your cup of tea but Bonds was a freaking well oiled machine as a hitter. Yes he realizes now he wasn’t the most pleasant but hitting wise and baseball wise the man was a machine!!!
I swing a Sam bat R2k1 because of Barry Bonds 💯 I don’t believe steroids are cheating within baseball. LASIK / PRK surgery would be in the same league within the context of baseball. Precision is the most important skill in baseball , his home runs couldn’t have been off by a 1/8” on the barrel or they would pop up or line drive . His timing and mechanics were perfect. Steroids just helped him play longer not see the ball better.
A great contact hitter and that's it??? You obviously didn't do your homework. Gwynn also stole over 400 bases in his younger years. That's only one of several other things he was good at. Do your homework
@Blah Playhard, really? He was also a gold glove in right. Gwynn was phenomenal. If Bonds gives him props, listen, cause he's giving Gwynn props for a reason.
Baseball is more than just hitting the ball as far as you can. Did you hear anything Barry said? Even he admits that Tony was a better hitter because he could place the ball exactly where he wanted it. I’m sure if Tony wanted to hit more home runs, he would’ve. But he chose not to, just like Ty Cobb. That’s what also made Greg Maddux so awesome and one of the best pitchers ever. He didn’t blow people away with 100 mph fastballs. He out-smarted them. He used his brains to dominate hitters. Baseball is a game of strategy and brains.
@@wadenelson719 Tony actually stole 319 bases lifetime for most of them to come early into his time for the most to stole any single season 56. Yeah, Gwynn proved to be a good base stealer and fielder while a great hitter.
^^^LOL. Bonds was my favorite player. Bonds imo is the greatest ever, and was a first-ballot, all-time great HoF player before the start of 1999, when it's understood that he started taking drugs...and yes, he took fucking drugs. Lots of them. Denying that is just raw stupidity. Hell, he admitted to taking the Cream and the Clear, both of which are steroids. He just claimed it was unknowingly. There's your proof.
Whatever negative image Barry had was self-inflicted. Known attitude problems, problems with teammates, problems with media, problems with managers etc. To be fair, he grew up watching his dad go through some serious and painful racial hate and bigotry and that likely played a part in his personality and actions towards others, including the media. His pops went through a lot and that has to be hard to watch as a kid. The steroid thing doesn't help, either. I think he is one of the few players who continues to deny using steroids. I think he resents being targeted so much because a LOT of guys cheated and why is he being singled out? That may have been his mindset.
He literally says at 3:00 that “it made him a great baseball player” and goes onto say “if you can’t beat em, join em.” If that isn’t blatant idk what is
Not acting like an ARSE in an interview doesn't make Barry Bonds a nice guy & taking P.E.D's qualifies him as a cheat & therefore unwelcome of a place in the hallowed halls of M.L.B's - Baseball Hall of Fame.
Wadda ya know? He's NOT a raving monster! Here's to showing the human side of these guys more. They're not super heroes, they're not scum. They're people who the best they can and sometimes, yes, they can be jerks - like the rest of us. God bless Barry Bonds
Always loved Barry.., my Daughter and I saw him play so many games with the Giants.., he was always nice as could be.., during the "on field picture day", he was engaging and having fun... nice interview, great to see him open up.... and so nice to hear him speak of his great friend, the great Tony Gwynn...
The Greatest Hitter to ever live and it’s not even close. Roids or not. Hitting in the major leagues is all timing and he never got a pitch to hit. And when he got the ONE PITCH a game to hit , he hit it 400ft.
That is all true, but the difference is that roids allow your body to recover exponentially faster. Which can make all the difference in the world when you reach late 30's trying to play with the best in the world 160 games per season. Just my 2 cents
Best player I've ever witnessed. Must see TV when he was at bat. It was electricity when he stepped up to the plate in the same way watching Mike Tyson step into the ring.
Bonds belongs in the HOF. He was worlds above and beyond even his PED'd up peers. He was a consummate sportsman on the field. He never charged anyone, he rarely argued balls and strikes. He wasn't even that bad with the media. And his ability to hit a baseball was transcendent.
Its not that. People who change their mind about something frequently don't actually have their own opinion. They only care what other think, so when they feel the wind blowing in a different direction, they change to that direction as well. Bmore Bob simply has low self-esteem. He isn't racist.
EVERYONE WAS ON STEROIDS. Notice how Bonds says his peers "know the truth" aka they knew ALL THE PLAYERS we're on steroids. The playing field was even. BONDS GOAT
Yes, Bonds without roids easily a first ballot hall of famer. He was basically a career of what Carlos Beltran was in his KC years. I hated Bonds, but I respected him. Those last years of roids were just what was happenning in baseball at the time, and eventually people will look back on Bonds, Sosa, McGwire in that time frame and realize thats just what was going on. Hell, anyone remember Brady Anderson? Like no more than 20 or so HR's in a season and then out of nowhere he jacks 50. That was kind of the start of it. Ken Caminitti? Have to look at this stuff in periods. Gwynn on the other hand. Well, best hitter of my generation no compromise. Would like to see what he'd have done with the weak ass pitching of the 2000's. Jamie Moyer was a half ass pitcher that played for like 50 years, and in his twilight, he was a pretty good pitcher, because WTF was there to compare him to at that point?
@@flame-sky7148 difference is that they admitted to it and asked for forgiveness. People like Barry continue to lie and won’t accept responsibility for cheating. I would be ok with it if he admitted he made a mistake, but he’s too full of himself to ever do that.
You know Tony was a great hitter when the best hitter of the last few generations looked up to him. Tony he still greatly missed. He was taken far too soon.
I mean, he was a dick.... Kobe almost got charged with rape, MJ gambled alot, Bonds was a dick and used roids, but people change. I like him now and I honestly guess i just misunderstood him and fell in the trap of the media. lol mb. But i always thought he was a great hitter. It's still hard to hit a baseball no matter how strong and ripped you become within an alarmingly short time and become one of the greatest hitters ever at such an old age. lol that last part of that was kinda of a joke but still hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. He is one of the best , if not the best to do it.
That ass would have had an incredible career without the steroids. Dude could hit, field and was a better athlete as he aged than Gwynn by far. Too bad he cheated for the power. I remember talk of him coming to the Padres during free agency. I remember very clearly the media talked about their friendship as a possible draw to bring Barry Bonds to San Diego.
Nah, Barry is a straight man, ya he talks like that but he is a good friend of our family.. one of our best friends, Great dude and funny as hell believe it or not..
If Bonds didn't believe steroids would help him be a better player than he naturally was, he wouldn't have taken them. His stats are inflated and he isn't as good as others who came before him, like Mays, Ruth, Foxx, Ted Williams etc.
of course he thought it would help him. he was seeing how players that were worst than him were putting up crazy numbers because of it. he leveled the playing field and you get what you got.
