I wonder if Barry ever thought he would become famous singing a song like "Eve of Destruction". Gayle Caldwell wrote the great Frank Sinatra song, ":Cycles"
I used to watch Hootenanny. I was a freshman in high school, away from home for the first time and homesick as a person could be. Music outside of "approved" TV was prohibited. The New Christy Minstrels was unique to music. The size of the group was bigger and the music formula was different. I doubt anything like it will ever return to our popular music scene, so if you like it, buy their music for your listening enjoyment.
Larry Ramos (later of the Association, and the first Asian-American Grammy winner) and Gene (The Byrds) Clark are in this lineup as well! I admit to being insanely envious, as a small girl, of the women in this group. My mother responded by confiscating my guitar. (Regrettably, she was tonedeaf; a trait I did not inherit.)
He stopped touring with the group in May 1963 to concentrate on developing new material for the group & to operate an LA night club called Ledbetters which became a training ground for folk musicians. He also started another group "The Back Porch Majority" which became kind of a farm team providing replacement members for the New Christy Minstrels as some of them moved on to solo careers.

Damn if the New Christy Minstrels were playing at Barry McGuire called someone "Our Precious Pineapple" the DEMOCRATS and Wokeness Stupidity Generation would call him a ravin' racist and would want to cancel him....Thank God, my generation didn't think that way...
Not really sure what generation you think you are from. Eve of Destruction was more awake than most anything else in that generation as were the Byrds. Time for you to wake up already...
