Music from another planet. Avant-garde yet sweet and soulful, with a definite melodic purpose

I'm just a pop/rock/borderline jazz musician, but i've always loved this piece and his string quartets...got into him through Debussy(a great musical epiphany for me)...scintillating performance...Bartok's music seems equal parts strident and sensitive...long live the great Bela Bartok and his friend Zoltan Kodaly!!!✌

What a wonderful example of organized chaos of string instruments. Janine Jansen is superb. Loved the performance.

One if not the hardest piece to play. They did a good job on it. Bartók would be proud.

I can’t say I’m a huge Bartok fan, but having played this piece before it’s an incredible work! Such a wide range of emotions and feelings; stress, confusion, uncertainty, darkness, relief, and joy. Janine, and her crew here, certainly give this work much justice with their invigorating performance. She is undoubtedly a defining artist of our generation!

Thank you for your comment! I feel the same; stress, confusion, uncertainty, darkness, relief, and joy. But most of all joy over the fact that this music has been written down on paper.

The opening movement of this piece takes me back 25 years to my days in graduate school in Baltimore We had this cable TV channel called the Classic Arts Showcase ("ARTS") and they'd always play this work between sets; I'd often fall asleep to these notes 🎶

One of my absolute favorites from Bartok, and what a rendition. Nothing quite as joyous as the third movement.

This work was played by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra last night in Glasgow after the news of the invasion of Ukraine. The second movement was particularly poignant with its dark and menacing passages.

Great, and amazing also if you consider this was the final piece after four days of intense music making together at the IKFU2019 of the musicians! Like someone said before:Janine is not only playing, but also conducting! Enjoyed it very much (also being there the 29th). I hope the Kodály also will be online, that’s my favourite part of this evening.
