BART debuts anti-fare evasion gates at West Oakland station

BART's long-anticipated new fare gates are up and running at the West Oakland station. Over time they are expected to be installed at all BART stations. The goal is to put the brakes on fare invaders by making it harder for people to jump or squeeze through the gates.

2:13 the people who can't afford to get to places they need to are the ones using clipper start and the like. The people who jump the gates are those who can either afford it but are stubborn or are looking for a place to sleep/shoot up. This is at least what I have seen in my experience - the low-income daily commuters from places like antioch and east oakland are not the ones who fare evade but rather young delinquents

Yeah, this isn’t gonna stop drug addict from getting on the trains, they get free tickets all the time from nonprofit organizations. They also have access to lower fare cards like you said.

I am saying the opposite. This will ONLY keep the evildoers out, the people who need to ride transit are the ones who pay and those who ruin the system are mostly those who jump the gates.@@mfo7611

2:13 No one is entitled to free rides. Like another commenter said, the girl is probably a fare evader herself and is unhappy she has to pay. Not saying the homeless or the poor shouldn't get help, but those who fare evade usually have some money to pay for rides, they just choose not too.

This pivot project is being run by Blacks as I saw most of them at the gate all the time… not sure what do you mean by this comment because they may start seeing the cost of not doing these thing and pick this prime location to start with?

To the lady excusing crime. There already is a system where low income can get Bart cards at a 50% discount. That’s fair. Stop supporting criminals, which puts riders at risk to the point where they’d rather drive to work,, which further decreases funding for BART safety and public services.

I don't think riders actually care about people evading the fare, the problem is that those folks are usually the ones smoking drugs on the train or inspecting their machete

I'm a regular BART user and don't believe the loss of fares due to fare evaders is the primary issue. My perception is that the fare evaders (they're ridiculously easy to spot: just stand at the gate at Fruitvale station for a few minutes and you'll see many hopping over the gate or exiting the emergency door or just walking thru the unlocked gate next to the Station Agent's booth) are often the delinquent, intoxicated, smelly, disheveled, smoking passengers who degrade the BART experience and intimidate and frighten decent folk. So, the loss of fare due to direct theft is compounded by the fare evaders scaring off fare paying passengers.

smh... the sense of entitlement that certain people have that they shouldn't have to pay and that everything in life should be free. As others point out, the majority of fare evaders aren't doing it because they can't afford to pay.

lol, BART should install these gates at all the transfer stations first!!!! that way it will be quite hard to avoid paying --- their installing these gates at different stations all around BART -- they should install them at all the transfer stations
