yeah, Guy had real issue before I met him in 06. He told me he had two strokes from the ANSAID he was prescribed. I forget which one it was. He looked and sounded fine but he was fully retired from fighting and working for Chuck Norris. He took care of my licensing for me. I just thought he was a great guy. but he was in great pain from injuries.

Bas stays so cool and collected. He doesn't throw volume at all, every strike is deliberate. It makes his body shots especially deadly. Also his conditioning was amazing. You can see Mezger slow down within 5 minutes or so but Bas stays strong the whole way.

These are great (commentating on your own fights). Unique in the world of MMA? Maybe. You were a "complete" fighter in your skill set and competency. Really amazing ground game/ defense (among the best I've ever seen). I guess during these days (or in this league) the rules were no closed fist punches to the face/ head? Nowadays fights seem to end to early because someone gets in a vulnerable position, and then they are met with a barrage of face/ head strikes and the ref ends the fight.

Bas, how do you think you would have done if strikes on the ground were used all the time? The amount that you get taken down in these fights makes me wonder if you would have won many fights at all!
@BallJuiceOfZeus
@BallJuiceOfZeus 10 лет назад
He submits alot from the bottom. If strikes on the ground were used I bet he would have done alot of tdd
@PastFailure
@PastFailure 10 лет назад
He mentions in one of his fights (I'm paraphrasing) that he would have really liked to strike on the ground, but then there were many times where he would have been at a disadvantage as well, in which case he'd change up his strategy. Long story short, he would adjust his technique to adapt to ground-and-pound.
@man61x
@man61x 10 лет назад
.... he was slick on the ground as time came by.... he didnt need TDD cause he was confident about his ground game.... Condit fights the same way and strikes are allowed in Unified Rules... and just imagine if Bas was on top lol DANGADADANGADADANG BING POW GODSPEED AND PARTY ON!!
@pocketfullofstones
@pocketfullofstones 9 лет назад
He would of done badly. By how bad his wrestling is on the feet it looks like he just trained ground and striking. However it worked for him because there was no ground and pound. I'm sure if the rules were different he would of had to train differently.
@MansMan42069

There was a sort of gentleman's agreement that no one would strike the other on the ground. Of course, if either initiates, the other is well within the rules to retaliate.

The most over hyped fighter to me is oyce Gracie (I know his name is Royce but I'm poking fun at the adepts of the Gracie cult who parrot the Brazilian pronunciation...) Yesterday I was watching the quite sad Fedor's last fight, but when all the legends of the sport came on the octagon to honor Fedor and pay respect it was quite a moment and I'm sure to have seen a picogram of emotion on Fedor's granite face. oyce camel face with that oversize denture trying to intrude in every framing of the show was the apex of bad taste and creepiness. It was hard to watch. You could clearly see the "true" legends of the sport ashamed for him. oyce is maybe the first artificially hyped "athlete" of combat sports history. Certainly Lawyer Gracie (oiron) and his minions have made a great job (a Brazilian job, but they were more than eleven for sure).

He was not used to rounds longer then 3 minutes. So instead of being overagressive in the first few minutes of the round he draws an R on his hand to remind him of being 'rustig', which rougly means 'stay calm' during the fight. He was afraid he would spill all his energy in the first few minutes so that later on he would lose because of that.

I respect guy First of all at least once he beat Tito Ortiz he lost the second fight. But the main reason I respect him is because when wanderlei Silva was a murderer and nobody could hurt him he beat guy mesker but he beating with blood streaming down of the corner of his eye. A lot of people were jealous of guy because the women loved him to me that's no concern of mine. This really doesn't look like the guy of later. When the women were crazy about him he had black hair and a little bit of stubble. The first time he beat Tito Ortiz no one celebrated more than Ken shamrock. It's just unfortunate that shamrock couldn't fight Tito Ortiz when both of them were in their prime.
