Awesome video. I was looking for a video to help explain the game to a non-American friend. Some more unwritten rules... don't steal a base when ahead by 5 runs after 5 innings... also don't watch your home run... you're likely to get plunked on your next at bat. Well done.
I never realized how complicated baseball was until someone asked me to explain a play on a clip channel, I sat at the keyboard a few minutes trying to figure out how to simplify the wording
I am from India..I was searching in Google to learn about baseball for a long time..but none really helped.. And Thank God you made this video..It really helped me a lot. Thank you uploader ...
The innings part is a little tricky to fully explain. But theres 9 innings. Each inning is split into top and bottom. The top of the inning is for the visiting team to bat and the bottom of the inning is for the home team to bat. But if the home team is winning, the bottom of the 9th is not played and the home team wins.
Growing up playing and watching baseball, I never thought it very complicated. I can see now how complicated it would be for someone new to learn the game. You've got the basics here, but there are several more rules and much more by way of basic strategy. What was not very well explained was the basic curtesy used by baseball players. I have never even heard of some of the gestures mentioned. I guess those things are learned by experience though.
It was well explained to what I remember about the sport when I was kid. And now I'm just refreshing my memory for the baseball camp in Germany for my church mission this summer. You did great and learned more rules that I didn't observe before esp the unspoken ones
I've tried to understand the nuances of baseball before, as a Brit...this was really helpful and very entertaining! Great job! I know people who know the game already may be grumpy about some of the detail, but for me starting from scratch, this was great! Thanks!
Wow...that was pretty confusing. There are a lot of questions unanswered but I understand it was quite difficult to do. Wonder if I could do one of these for cricket...
Terrific! Wonderful just to hear the game explained by someone with another accent.Much appreciated! I hope you come to enjoy the game as much as we do.
3:18 the pitcher stands on a thin rectangular "rubber" not a "diamond." Once he has the ball, he cannot take his dominant foot off of the rubber. If he does, it is a penalty called a "balk" and all runners advance one base.
Awesome! Thanks for this. I shared this with my 17 year old daughter before she and I before I took her to her 1st professional baseball game with the CanAm League.
I give props because it says that he learned all of this after seeing one game but i think this was a pretty great and informative video. Yes there was a few things wrong with the scoreboard, base directions and even how he described scoring or illustrating it, but it is baseball there is a reason why so many peoiple love the game it is not a easy game to play let alone even learn, so i give this person total props for making this video and actually making it well BASEBALL IS #1 SPORT EVER!!!!!!
@6:45, the Home team bats in the bottom of the inning. This is important because it means the home team bats last when they're behind in the score, or wins outright after the top of the 9th.
Thanks for the fun way to understand an American pastime. I enjoyed it. I am a little league coach, and this would be a great thing for my players to get a refresher.
Every rule has an exception, however… 3 good throws towards the batter (STRIKES) and the batter is OUT (strikesout). These throws are called ‘pitches’, because the person throwing the ball is the ‘Pitcher’. 4 bad pitches (BALLS) and the batter goes to first base automatically (WALK). After being hit, if the ball hits the ground, the defense must get the ball to the base (the white pillows you see) before the batter/runner gets to that base for an OUT (groundout). Had the defense caught the ball before it hit the ground, the batter is OUT (flyout). If the runner is touched by a defensive person (fielder) with the hand/glove that’s holding the ball, the runner is OUT (unless he/she is standing on a base, then the runner is still SAFE). 3 OUTS and the other team gets to bat (or ‘hit’...i.e...play offense). After each team has batted (accumulated three outs), that’s one INNING. After 9 innings, the game is over. The object of the game is to touch all the bases IN ORDER, i.e...first base second base, third base, then fourth base (right back where u started, fourth base is called ‘home plate’, or just ‘home’). That scores a point (called a ‘run’).
I bet you understand enough to follow along in a game - and the more you follow, the more you will pick up the little details. Is there any big area you have trouble with?
This is a pretty good basic explanation. To do a full explanation would take hours. I feel this is why baseball isn't as popular as other sports in America. I feel most Americans would know everything in this video but not fully understand everything that is happening at every second of the game. I played baseball my whole life and know the sport pretty well. To me watching baseball is like watching an intense chess match. There is so much strategy that goes into every piece of the game that most people wouldn't even notice. why is the pitcher throwing this pitch at this time, why are the fielders positioned in that place, etc. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I will try to answer as best I can.
3:53 The runner/batter can still be marked for a hit if he gets out as long as he had reached first base safley. Ex: Getting thrown out going for a double is still a statistical hit but does not count for your on base percentage. Or a double
Wonderful video! You did a great job explaining the basics. I will be sharing this with my new Australian friends in preparing them for their first American ball game but with one correction: on the scoreboard, the visiting team is always listed on the top and the home team is always on the bottom. And that's how the innings are referred to: top of the inning means the visiting team is at bat and the bottom of the inning means the home team is at bat. Thanks for a great video.
Great video!!! Have been playing baseball for ABCVE Dragons for nearly a year now, I needed to see this video before I started lol keep up the good work!
Loved it, but can I make an observation? On the scoreboard, the home team is always on the bottom, so by referencing the "bottom of the 5th," the listener knows the inning AND what team is hitting, with much on-air efficiency. Great video.
Thanks u explained it alot but u didnt tell what I was looking for maybe like a video on where the ball goes on basses im on my way to the llws this year ya thank u thank u!
Wooow !!! Thank you very much you were so helpful ,even if it was so defecult and there was so many rules but I think I quietly understand it . keep up the good work (y)
WAW! loads of frustrations regarding Europeans ,just like Europeans have about Americans ;) but let me help u with that! Did you knew that in the "heart" of Europe there is no baseball winter training? well at least for kids it is not!games also get cancelled for the most pathetic reasons, superficiality in trainings;maybe that is why many coaches from here, move there! my son hates football and everything it stands for ,but adores baseball; he sais it is a smart game ;) that is how I ended up here ;))) we looked everywhere for a club for him but as it seems we must wait for the first bud to bloom ! thank you for the video! it is so confusing at first,I got only the courtesy rules :) but the more you watch ,the more it reveals! Also actually watching a game helps a lot! Thank you for your video!
