Another great analysis. The thing I always laugh about with Manny... Let's say one takes his early 2008 stats with Boston as... "off." OK, fine. But then, what's then narrative? That he got traded, shot up, and SUDDENLY became the second coming of Babe Ruth? REALLY?! If he'd been taking them in the off-season, or throughout the season, then he wouldn't have "sucked." (And he DIDN'T, but that's the narrative.) And then in a few short weeks he's suddenly better than he ever was?! Yeah... No. I've always gone with "change of scenery" on this one. Because the NARRATIVE doesn't really fit the facts with Manny. If PED's worked THAT WELL, THAT QUICKLY, you'd have whole teams shooting up, right before the playoffs. (And also having their hearts all explode by the WS, but that's another issue. LoL) It's basically the BRADY ANDERSON problem: What could be SO EFFECTIVE that taking it for just one off-season doubles your home run production, and then upon STOPPING IT brings you right back to where you were just one season later?! And whenever someone asks for a similar example? Roger Maris, Jacoby Ellsbury, Wade Boggs, Norm Cash... There are TONS of guys who had hot stretches or fluke years and those don't require any explanation. (Although, Boggs was hitting a juiced ball '87, and IIRC Cash admitted to using an illegal bit in '61.) But THAT'S BASEBALL. Fluke Years HAPPEN. If that was what PED's were capable off? There wouldn't be an athlete alive in any sport that wasn't using. And I say that as one of your skeptics here. (Albeit one you've mostly won over.) Please do Barry Bonds. Please do Barry Bonds. Please do Barry Bonds. Please do Barry Bonds. 😅 I think you'll have a hard time with THAT particular case.
