Practicing recall off leash with Oringo, including whistle for distance recall. Plenty of distractions to keep it challenging - smells, dogs, bird poo...

35 years ago I had wonderful female Basenji. I always took her out the a huge pasture. Your B reminds me of my Basenji. She would run around all out of sight but always reliably returned. BTW, there was a lake on the land and she would always jump in a swim around for a short time. I was always told Basenji never go into water but that is just not the truth. My Basenji loved swiming. Due to my mom's cooking most healthy foods, she lived for 17 1/2 years.

I have had 2 basenjis. You do very well with yours. Beautiful independent dogs that many misunderstand.

I believe allot of instinct from centuries of Basenji history plays into their own recall. I had a boy B many yrs ago and when he was about 9 I let him and our girl B go off leash in a back wooded trail area. My boy would go out just far enough to where he could look back and see me and come back to me than out again. I was amazed at how he thought this thru and I truly felt like the pack leader. My girl she was just out of sight but would circle back to where she could see me but not fully back to me. This was truly amazing knowing that Basenjis has a bad rap for taking off.

thats great to hear, you must have had great bond with your Bs! With my two, I find that the more off leash experience they have, the more confident and independent they become, so with time their distance away from me naturally becomes longer, so as the time between check-ins, so I use lots and lots of rewards to reinforce frequent check-ins and recall. But when they are off leash together - they become a gang and dont rely on me or listen to me as much, so I almost never let them out together in unfenced setting...

My basenjis never would swim and one would not even cross a 1 inch stream of water on a path. She could climb, also. No dog odor, quiet and beautiful. Energetic and more cat like. Fastidiously clean. Know, however, that they are independent and not motivated to please the same way as other dogs.

Thanks for sharing you experiences. We are currently considering getting a (smaller) dog after our Goldendoodle passed away recently. I love this african breed but at the same time, I´m hesitant because I´m afraid that the upbringing of a Basenji could be too strenuous. I want a dog around me that I can be relaxed with when we´re out and about and this breed might not be suitable for this.
@oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
Hello! in all honesty, one can't fully relax with a basenji, whether outside or inside 😄 so its definitely a good idea to weigh up pros and cons!

У меня вопрос. Я имею басенджи и хотел бы спросить с какого возраста вы уже начали отпускать с поводка ?
@oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
@oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 24 дня назад

Can I ask what kind of training treats/foods work best for you? Our B is a little food picky and we have tried a few different things. He seems only interested in food for a short time and then is more distracted by dogs, scents, animals, etc. He sometimes doesn’t eat until late afternoon….. ( he is only 5 months old) Thank you, Very impressed with your training skills!😊

Hi! For outdoor I use a variety of natural treats mixed up, some higher value like dried liver/lung/heart and lower value like dried fish/kangaroo jerky/fish skins. At puppy age it is expected that playing with other dogs and exploring is way more interesting than food (actually this is probably true for most basenjis even after puppyhood 😆). You could start building more food drive with the puppy, if thats what you want, by feeding as much of his daily food as possible via some sort of games/training/interaction with you rather then from a food bowl. And for practicing attention outdoors, do it when the puppy is hungry. Throwing treats also make them more interesting. When I practice "leave it" command with my dogs and want them to ignore something yammy they found, I call them off and throw a bunch of treats on the ground, acting with excitement and creating a sense of urgency, and they quickly forget about what I distracted them from. One other thing you could try is a feeding squeeze pouch filled with peanut butter, and give that for the puppy to lick when you want to distract him from something. This will take longer for him to consume, and should keep him engaged for longer 🙂 Disclaimer: please treat this as personal opinion only and not proffesional asvice. I am not a professional trainer or dog behaviourist ☺️
