I'm literally looking for dogs that aren't huge barkers and this was the number one dog on the list 😂 it seems like any "bark-less" dog makes the worst noises
Basenji's are absolutely amazing! I have one myself but sadly... he does bark sometimes, which really confused my family. They are dogs full of many surprises so watch out if you get one 😅
I love this. I have a basenji terrier mix and people have a hard time sometimes believing she's a basenji even though she's got the face and the tail and the ears and she plays quiet tug of war but now I forwarded this yodel to a few people and said See because she makes this sound if I don't let her out to play or if I'm watering plants instead of playing with the hose. I love them!
They're great dogs, tho! And while they have some unique vocalizations, they don't really vocalize as much as other dogs do. So it's more having hours of quiet broken up by the occasional yodel/screech. Tho that can depend on the individual.
I lived in an apartment my neighbor had one named Rosie. She became so attached to me that my neighbor gave me keys to let her come over when I got home because she would yodel so loud the other neighbors would call the property manager to complain about her.
@ZinTarard-zy1ps I had a neighbor when I lived in Africa who had three of them for hunting. They're very good at hunting small bush animals, but I wouldn't put it past them to go after larger game as a pack.
My Basenji once screeched in the car at something and the way it sort of felt louder in the confined space just made it very like "please don't do that again".
They're actually African hunting dogs that originated in Central Africa (my Basenji is from West Africa and over there, she's rare as rocks, but here in the US, she gets a lot of attention because she looks different).
It depends on their mood. My dog definitely has a yodel (she's also a Basenji) but she only uses it once in a blue moon. The only way I can describe it is this kind of low, rolling "brrrarrrraarrr" sound she makes. But when you hear it, yodel is definitely the right word for it.
