I love this! I have a banjolele and am always looking for new banjo-y ways to play it. I would welcome any other banjolele tutorials you want to make before your uke goes to the winner :)
Exceptional teaching. Inspirational, educational, professional expertise. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and talents with the world. You are definitely making the world a better place with your wonderful videos. Mucho Gracias
2 things, I found my great grandfathers banjolele and had it restrung and tuned today and I'm excited to start learning to play, and last, I love that you're a lefty!
Very cool Katie. I have been playing these stringed instruments for over 50 years and it always thrills me when you show me something I have never done before. Thanks dearly!
Wow Bill! That is incredibly encouraging! Thank you so much for telling that. It made my day. I always find it very encouraging when someone finds a video useful, and I'm so grateful for you :). Have an awesome day!
Good morning, Ms. Katie, I love waking up on Saturday to see what my my "present under the tree is" from you! Not a banjo or Bluegrass kinda girl, but I always appreciate learning different skills and techniques! I t makes for a well-rounded musician.. Besides, by the end of the tutorial, that cute little thing had grown on me...and much to my husband's dismay, I wanted one! BTW.... love the metrenome. Hugs from Houston!❤
HAHHAHA!!! I know what you mean! "But this one's different.." has been the key phrase that I've used, and it still hasn't worked. So funny. I'm so glad that you gave it a listen even if it initially wasn't something that you thought you might enjoy. I really appreciate it. Thanks for being here.
These finger rolls sound great on my ukulele. On the Duke10 Banjolele it has that extra special tone, the notes sound fun and lively, it's a perky Happy instrument. Thanks for the new exercises, smiling learnings. (Lol, funny bloopers, I was looking for the uke strap when you said that, hahahah) Happy days of Love 💚😘💚
Super video! Here is an ending similar to shave and a haircut: play 3rd string open, then pluck 2nd fret and hammer on to the third and then fourth fret. Then open 4th string, open 1st string, open 4th and finally 3 fret on the 1st string. In bluegrass it's called the g run. For ukulele we can call it the c run.
Oh what a great giveaway and tutorial. I've been wanting a banjolele so bad. Thank you for giving away something so unique, it is very generous of you! ❤❤❤❤❤
oh my goodness, looking forward to watching this later--I have been wanting a banjolele for a little while, too...I bet this feeds the flame a little... ;-)
That means so much to me. Thank you for watching and for taking a one out of your day to leave me an encouraging comment. Happy that you’re inspired to play again.
Wow this is super crazy, I’ve been looking into Banjoleles for the past week now! I have a Bondi Uke, but I was thinking about wanting a new sound. Maybe I’ll get lucky in this giveaway!
Hi Katie, you have done more banjolele tutorials...this is really great! I love bluegrass 😍. Thank you for helping us to play great things on the Ukulele! Best wishes from Steffi (Germany) again.
Hi, I'm Tim from Alaska, I play a Left handed Banjo. I was wondering if I can take a Banjolele, reverse the strings and play it left handed? Thank you.
I don't know why you couldn't... I, too, am left handed - and that is what I've done with my soprano ukulele - reverse the strings. I purchased my concert and banjolele as left-handed instruments with the only difference being the little markings on the side of the fret board. A little nail polish can take care of that!
Great exercises to do on any stringed instrument......This teaches good coordination and timing........Using a metronome is essential......Thank you, Katie, for all you do.......BTW, thanks for reminding me, that I do need a shave and a haircut.......I think I can use the metronome for that too....:).......shhhh...your strap is showing.....:)
Hahahahah!!!!! Greg, you light up my life!!! Yes, please use your metronome. I had a student say that she used her Metrodome to help her keep time, and I said that it must have been a long drive to Minnesota to use their facilities to practice 😂.
I play ukulele, I’m not great, I’ve got a kmise banjolele being delivered next week, I’ll have to restring it for left handed, I’m sure I’ll be using this very helpful video, thank you x
I highly recommend anybody interested in any single instrument, always try to learn other parallel instruments. I think it helps learn the concepts by comparison. Especially good if the two instruments are tuned differently.
Thank you so much for this. I have been looking for just this type of video for a long time. There just doesn’t seem to be very many resources for banjolele. Love that banjolele you are playing. Is it a concert scale?
Yes!!! I got the ukulele string i ordered online today. Ive changed my string. Can you please teach me how to find the chords of a song? I learned ukulele for 5 months now. Im asking you this because you are the best uku teacher to me. Thanks...
I can see if you dont understand what i mean. I m from india and not american so my english is not that understandable. I study in a village school. So😥😥😥
That would be a good series of videos to make. It would take more than one video to explain the music theory behind it. It would take some practicing, but it can be done.
No, your English is great :). I just needed to know what chords to what songs. You explained yourself very well when you asked how to figure out a song just by listening to it.
Thank you so much for making this video!! It's very easy to follow along with and reminds me of actual in-person music lessons! I recently got a banjolele, but I've been playing the uke for a few years now. Learning riffs and fingerpicking has always been so daunting for me and I've never really known where to begin. This video really helps me understand it better and find it more enjoyable than intimidating. 💕
That’s awesome! I love bluegrass! ❤️ I’m gonna try that on my regular uke. Do you know if the giveaway is international? I’m from Poland and would love to have a chance to win. It’s such a cool instrument!
Thank u, my friend and I want to start a little band playing blues and rockabilly with old school hillbilly instruments, do you know if there's any way to to tune the banjo so that it sound creepy/ distorted?
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, my forearm resting in the armrest would be my anchor point. I’m coming out with a video soon about fingerpicking technique, and I mention that you can place your pinky on the ukulele to anchor your hand if you’d like. It helps a lot. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. It all depends upon the pattern for me. I hope that helps.
I didn’t really know bluegrass ukulele was a thing, I play the mandolin, my bf is learning the banjo and I got my niece a cheap ukulele cause she loves playing with my mandolin so aye maybe she’ll want to do some bluegrass with me and my bf one day
Speaking of bluegrass (!), I’d really love to play John Conlee’s « Rose colored glasses » on my ukulele, but I can’t find any tutorial!! Pleaaase help! 😍
Find the sheet music and transpose the cords to what ever key you'll sing it in...that's all it is to it. Rose colored glasses is more of a country music tune but in the video it is a bluegrass group playing a country song. I looked at the guitar player cords as he played. He was playing G, C, and D cords but he was capoed at the third fret. That made him playing and singing the song in the key of B flat. I hope that helps you. Just transpose those cords to the key that matches your vocal range. In B flat with no capo just start off on B flat cord then change to the 4 cord then back to the 1 cord at the cord change and the next cord change will be to the 5 cord. If I was playing rose colored glasses and singing along I would strum slowly in 3/4 time to match my singing. Have fun.
Thank you so much! I've only been playing for a year, and although I sometimes surprise myself, I admit that I have a lot of difficulty finding just by ear or by observing ... and even by transposing, I succeeded a few times but not often . I'm a beginner, that's all! 🤪 But I think your comment will help me! 😃
Try plucking an open string and then sharply strike the string with one of your fingers onto the space between the frets (try 3rd fret just to practice). It’s making a sound without plucking g the string with your right hand. I hope that makes sense.
Good question. Because the G string is only a whole step away from the A string, it sounds a little strange to the ear. Usually, the ear wants to hear the lowest note in chord. If you had a low g, it would snake a little more sense to the ear. I hope that makes sense.
UkuleleAngela .....I frail it with some tunes, make the chord, pluck a note or however many fit that chord, strum down with the fingernails, pluck the G string as you go by. It is actually the Pete Seeger 5 string style. Short a low G because of the tuning. Not unlike clawhammer, but pluck up, then you are up to brush down and thumb. The thumb rides the G string.
One Music School ...I've tried low G, then it doesn't sound like a uke, or a banjo! Restricted if any notes below C in the tune. Frailing is quite addictive once you "get it".
Hi Bruce - it is our DUKE10 Tenor Banjolele. Check out the link in the description under the video. And if you are feeling lucky, enter the draw and you might win one in Katie's giveaway! - Jamie - Owner, DUKE Banjo Ukuleles
I know what you mean. I had to save for everything I wanted to buy when I was a kid. Nothing has changed, but starting early really taught me how to manage my money.
Winner of a video, I've been looking for "ukulele lessons for beginners online free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Fenaylern Nonpareil Formula - (do a search on google ) ? It is an awesome one of a kind product for discovering how to play the ukulele like a pro without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
