I've been sewing and quilting for many years but I enjoy your tips. It never hurts to have a reminder and sometimes I learn better ways to do things. Thanks.
This is one of the most valuable videos for beginners or "confident beginners" to watch. Whenever I watched a sewing tutorial it was never explained thoroughly how to line up the ruler and what to line up to (poor English here), so it was guess work really. I think instructors assume we just know some things or can quickly understand a technique we've never seen or heard about. Wrong! Thank you for this video.
As a fairly new quilter, I am thrilled you have such a wonderful teaching video. You style is informative without being condescending. I am looking forward to watching and learning from your videos.
Great information....Wish I had it 2.5 Years ago, when I started....live and learn...everyday is a learning experience....enjoy watching you Laura.....I've learned a lot in all your tutorials.....Thank you.
This is very necessary and basic information. Thank you for your clear instructions. I believe I would have avoided many mistakes if I'd had this video to guide me when I purchased my first ruler and rotary cutter. 👍😊
Thank you for the tips i did not realize that all rulers were not the same. I dont have that many im just starting out. I just ordered your corner one with the cut corner yesterday. It shipped today. I'll try to get more as soon as i get more money. Thank you for teaching me.
Good information. I liked the clarification of measuring by having the edge of the fabric under the center of the lines on the ruler because I have been wondering about this very thing. And illustrating the pressure point being the straight line down the arm through the wrist is so helpful. Now a couple of observations: I would like to see you use a Klutz Glove on the supporting hand for safety; especially since you do demonstrate that the blade CAN (and does) indeed jump the edge of the ruler. This an result in serious injury and trip to ER for stitches at the worst, or much inconvenience cleaning up the bloody mess at the least. Another thing I'm kind of compulsive about (from being a garment sewer first) is "straight-of-grain." Perhaps you have explained this in another video. When I see the pattern printed on the fabric going off the edge, I wonder if the warp of the fabric has not been straightened prior to cutting? Or are some directional fabrics just printed with the design running at an angle on purpose? I compare it to wallpaper ... we would all be aghast to see these wonky lines on our walls if the pattern was not printed parallel to the grain of the paper.
Always good to review . Perhaps some of us fall into bad habits.....just saying lol. I do tend to have issues cutting sometimes. Very hard to make long cuts sitting :( If I stand, I tend to need to hold myself up...and that is only for a short minute or two. Someday...someone will design a cutter for sitting?? Not going to hold my breath though. I just keep getting creative in cutting :)
So here's my question: My cutter only cuts as a fixed blade. Is the razor wheel supposed to stay still and just use that one piece of blade to cut? The blade is held on with a friction nut and when moved and locked outside the safety guard, it does not roll. I can't tell if the blade is rotating on your video. Obviously this is a dumb question, but I would think the wheel would actually roll on that axis. That is why I'm looking at how to use a rotary cutter videos. But my question is not being answered by what I'm seeing. Maybe you can clear this up for me.

Hi Laura. I am in need of the slippery mat you use for the machine extention table, and of course the machine. You called it something eles, and i believe it was found in a department other than quilting supplies? Could you send me the name?
Hi Cindy, I'm also left-handed. We "lefties", do find it hard at times. On the rotary BLADE, you wil see a nut that fits the blade to the cutter. Open the screw , remove the blade and fit it to the back of the cutter and tighten the screw. You now can easily use it with your left hand.
