Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan presents a beginner/intermediate lecture at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis. [English, Slav, London System]
I started playing chess very recently and got lucky to stumble upon this video. Yasser seems to be a super nice person! Really enjoyed the video, especially when he explained the sacrifice at 18:00
I'm a strong chess player myself but I still found this lecture interesting because it is hard for some players to see these moves that get there bishops trapped and its essentially dropping a piece.
I am a beginner in chess, and I started to learn the Sicilian defense. I was told not to learn the Sicilian cause it wasn’t for beginners. Are these moves more suitable for my skill level?
Maybe watch Mike Kummer's commentaries on this channel. He has a series called "Beginner Breakdown" where he talks about begineer player's games (Also he's funny)
Also I think he’s great, not trying to be insulting. Its his big smile, soft spoken demeanor and unique vocal cadence. He seems like he’d be perfect for the role :)
Uranus against the hippo I play c4 and d4. Set up your pieces on optimal squares. Then you have a super strong center, and the extra pawn on c4 which you usually don't have will prove to be extremely important.
There are two pawns guarding c4 so even if you take d5, you are still blocked for one more move. Or he can simply capture your c4 pawn, you move c3, and then he blocks the b1 move with his own bishop. Calculate who gets to go to that diagonal first, its black.
Sadly I did not see immediately why the rook on g8 liberated the bishop. It is, of course, because of the pin on the white king , which wasn't explicitly stated..
It hit me as i clicked the video back, he did mention the rook was the reason the bishop would be liberated without Kh2. A good instructor makes you work some out yourself.
dear yaser .. im surprised your opponent is a gm .. he actually playing awkward to trap his BOTH bishops that way .. the black dark square bishop is worse and cant break into the game .. i think your opponent should have his dark squares bishop on e7 to sack it for the c5 in case you moved the knight and get a passing pawn .. Bc5 - bxc5 -b4 axb4 - a3! - another strategy for white ..and that what i would do in similar position as i usually find difficult to calculable will the black king make it on time or not to save the queen side .. so i would place my light sq bishop on f1 .. to hold any attack or bishop sacking then travel with the king to Kg2-Kh3-Kh4-Kh5 to collect the pawn and the bishop .. now if the black dark bishop come to f8 "only sq" to defend the h6 i would easily bring me knight to f3 and collect that cant be defended h6 pawn and then same colour easy bishop ending with at least one passing pawn up and super easy winning endgame
