Hugely helpful, thank you! I needed to know how to measure barrel connectors, and this got right to the point and showed it both ways. Very much appreciate you.

Thanks for the video. One comment for safety sake you should always put the positive probe in first. Positive probe should be removed last.

Great tip for newbies. I have gotten many things to repair that folks have plugged in adaptor with wrong polarity and blew the crap out the guts. 90% of the time item's is beyond repair.

That's a bummer! I haven't fried anything with reverse polarity yet, but I hear it's common.

why doesn't manufacturer prevent this completely with a 2 cent diode? That would safe-guard completely, right?

@@tonycarboni2002 Why do they care that you burn up your device. You buy a new one. They make more MONEY.

I super glued the input cable to my laptop power supply to keep it from constantly falling out.

This was very helpful. I have some power supplies that have the voltage and current marked on them, but not the polarity of the plug and I was trying to find a correct power supply. I wasn't sure if I could just put the probes on the connectors directly or if it would blow up the multimeter. Nice to know it doesn't (assuming i'm using high enough voltage range at least)

an awful lot (most?) of these barrels connectors in consumer electronics are center-positive; but one area that is over-whelming center-negative are the power supps for guitar effects pedals. I'm sure there's some reason for that, but don't feel confident re: what it might be. VERY helpful video; thanks for posting this. :)

This is good question bc I notice that too. Can someone answer? Norm?

got a question. how come you dont get zapped when touching the outside of the (negative in this case)barrel of the plug? always wondered why most dc plugs have a few MM exposed barrel when fully plugged in, how is that safe?
@Electronzap
@Electronzap 2 года назад
You shouldn't feel anything if you touch both terminals of a power source that is well below 50 volts under normal conditions. Often the ground (negative) terminal is exposed because lots of things tend to share the same ground, so it is made easy to connect to. Only a proper load should also connect to the positive supply terminal. The biggest risk is metal touching both terminals at the same time (short circuit). Which can cause burns or injuries due to flying metal if it explodes.

Why is my AC adapter barrel still positive when I reverse the red and black probes?
@Electronzap
@Electronzap 9 месяцев назад
I don't know. If you switch the red and black probe measuring positions, then a positive voltage should show as negative or a negative voltage should show as positive.

When testing the barrel plug polarity is the charger plugged into the life AC outlet?
@Electronzap
@Electronzap Год назад
Yeah, the power supply needs to be plugged in.

Yes but how do you test polarity of the device you are powering? 😏 (Happy New Year!)
@Electronzap

I did think of that a bit, and I have no idea lol. Hopefully someone else replies with a good answer. Happy New Year!
