Also get some junkyard/unknown metals, cast steel, aluminium to practice on. Knock a few cracks and drill a few holes in them to repair. Coupons is good practice but they are very predictable. In the begining you get a lot of odd repair jobs.

You want that predictability, it's far easier to judge the quality of the weld. especially as a beginner.

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SERIES!! Im still a young guy, just this year Im getting to the point where something like investing in and starting a business for myself can be considered an actual intent, and not just some fantasy. Ive been following this channel for years now, always fascinated by the way things are just made. I was already starting to get the feeling that I might actually be able to do it soon, that 2021 might finally be the year I make it happen. It may only be a little bit, but this series coming out now of all times definitely feels a bit encouraging. Looking forward to seeing how this goes!

One Week Update: Welp, I got a car. A few of my close friends and I have been itching to get a group beater car for a couple of years now, and we came across something that just happened to fall right into our missile budget. So, my hand has been forced. We got ourselves a decently sized storage unit since no one has any garage space for a big project. Just ordered us a tool cabinet, as well as a fresh set of tools ripe for the communal slaughter. The welder sold out but that may have been for the better, at least for now it means I can focus on cleaning up the car some but yknow, its kind of happening. Its exciting. One step at a time.

One-ish year update: We’re still working our way towards first track day. We’ve restored the tank and dropped in a little walbro pump, and replaced all the fuel lines with new hardliners we plumbed up. Replaced almost every gasket for the engine. We rewired the car, tucked the engine harness, found a LOT of bondo. Currently we’re chipping away at replacing all the bushings and repainting everything under the car. Next steps are refreshing the brake system, doing a clutch job, and dropping in some seats. It’s been a long and bumpy road with our jobs changing, people moving, and the cars needed to be moved a few times to a new home before we could work on it more. Still waiting on the tig, we’ve been getting by with a Lincoln wire feed for the time being. We don’t get to work on it often but when we do we come in with a game plan and get a lot done. Looking forward to that first burnout for sure.

Great video! I'm a silversmith and just started dabbling in welding, so I'm really good at grinding (bet you never heard that before). Before becoming a silversmith I was a physiotherapist, which means I'm geared to look at the health and safety aspect of whatever I put my mind to. So while we're covering the basics could we also emphasise the importance of investing in proper protective clothing and the dangers of UV on exposed skin, mainly melanoma. Especially if this is your job and you're welding all day long. Thanks again for a great video!

If you watching this you probably know about Fireball Tool's RU-vid channel. Another great resource for tools, although a little pricey. but, if you can't afford a welding table get one of the small (12x12) squares he sells. Best in the business for squaring up while keeping everything on the same plane plane. Really important when working with long lengths of material. Also, auctions are another great place to find tools. I recently won an old Delta floor drill press with a machinists vice for $60 and it's a tank. No plastic parts whatsoever. Great video. Subscribed! Can't wait for the next.

Great presentation and very appropriate information. My comments as to which welder to buy, well, what are you going to weld? Buy the machine whose capabilities can handle what you anticipate that you will be welding. Buy the next larger capability machine when your first welder starts limiting what you are trying to do whether it is metal thickness or duty cycle. Starting out, lower duty cycles probably won't affect you as much as when you become more experienced. As you build out, you will find that purchasing the welder was the cheap part. Another thing to remember is that there is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. Another thing to think of is to buy a machine with slightly larger capacities and capabilities than what you need. You will grow into the machine. Fabricating tools and fixtures for your shop is a good way to gain experience. It will also allow you to show off your capabilities. For example, I wanted a cut off saw to be able to make nice square cuts without a great deal of fatigue. I was doing well with a cut off wheel on a four inch angle grinder but I wanted something a little quicker and not so tedious. I have a 6" angle grinder that I rarely use because of its size and it is a beast to use. I made a stand for it. I learned a lot about fabrication of something with the tools that I have. I am proud to say that it turned out quite well. I am now going to make a larger wheel guard so that I can mount a 10" cutting disc on it. (Yes, I checked and it has an RPM rating that is sufficient for my grinder) But before I make that, I need to make a small capacity roll bender first. A couple of other things, don't be put off by the tag of a "hobbyist welder". Your welds have to be just as good as the professional welder. The difference is that the professional welder is already doing it for a living. Next, you will end up with about 4 angle grinders. Don't ask me how I know. 🙂 The last thing, get the welding coupons and practice, practice, practice until your welds look like the ones in the books and videos. (And I mean the good ones!) Start off with the flat position. Then progress to the vertical, then horizontal and finally overhead. Then start practicing pipe welds. If you cannot lay down a good bead flat, you sure are not going to do it in any other position. A fun way to practice welding to show that you have very good control, sign your name in weld bead on a piece of plate and hang it in your shop. If people ask you if you are any good, just point to that. And by sign your name, I mean cursive, not printed. Good luck and have fun with it.

Being an auto mechanic, diesel mechanic, plumber- a host of different trades can all start out with very few tools or equipment and all can do $30 K clear the first year if you have some skills and persevere, learn and grow. Invest in your self, your tools and equipment and $100 K is possible in less than five years. Me, I'm a retired plumber with specialty tickets in natural gas, medical gas distribution systems, acid wastes, a moderately skilled fitter, and got into every sort of HVAC except the systems on Conex containers and OTR trailers and box cars. It's really about hard work and personal investment- re investment. Your onto a "solid row of dimes" TFS!

Great video as always. Thank you for putting this together and sharing. I really appreciate it. If $2800 is too much, I don't think you have to "get out now, run away." I started my business with only $600. It can still be done but it'll take a lot longer. It's like buying a car as opposed to buying all the parts to a car and then building the car from those parts. Benefits, you don't have to buy all the parts at once. Downside, you have to put it all together over a much longer time. Although, you're absolutely right about "if you're going to complain" then definitely get out now. That attitude only sets you up failure and you're only going to waste your money and time.

Viewed from across over the pond it's very interesting to see that US folks always go for the toolbox on wheels while over here it's benches, drawers, shelves.
@orbitalair2103

we have trouble planning ahead, so if its on wheels we can move it. ;^) my 4ft workbench is the only piece I have not on wheels, oh and foldup weld table. I even put my drillpress, bandsaw, sander and bench grinder on a rolling cart, makes it easier to roll into driveway for more room to handle long boards.

American here. You bring up a very good point. I don’t know if it’s specifically American though, seems to be a fad or the popular thing to do right now. The only thing I have on wheels is a mig welder because it’s easier to move too the welds. I don’t get the things on wheels idea either, no idea why people do it.
@horstkotte6114
@horstkotte6114 3 года назад
@@spydercoslacker7466 Yeah, a welder on wheels is pretty much standard over here as well, mostly because of the gas cylinder. As a rather new addition, I got a cheapo serving cart with the tools I use most often. It is handy. But starting out on a budget, I wouldn't splurge on a tool chest. I'd just hit the local scrapper and classifieds, as everybody else. But then again, they don't sponsor youtube videos and don't give commissions :-)

Really enjoyed this vid and am looking forward to the next installment. I'm pretty much set up toolwise, but need help with everything else. Constantly practicing and getting better, but I need to find a niche and learn how to find (and keep) customers. Love all the other stuff on this channel, but this particular series hit at the perfect time. NEED MORE!!!! Thanks! :-)

I received my Prime weld today and one thing you didn't metioned is how good the user manual is :) It not only descibe every fonction of the welder, but the is all the basic tecnics for AC & DC welding (Amps setup, torch inclinason, electrode types and angles...), also stick welding is detailled with represenatations of what good to do. Easily a beginner book you can give to a student, hands down the more passionated welding company ^^

The end hit hard...I'm just starting and I recently bought a cnc plasma table, welder, brake press, fab table , and saving to get a tube bender... The fab industry is not for the person that constantly gets buyer remorse and it's not a low investment high return business.

I started off with a bare minimum education, an AC stick welder almost as old as I am and a handful of tools. (about 2 months ago) I've not earnt much but if you put the time in, people will pay you fairly and come back. (I'm also open that I'm a newbie and that if _I_ fuck up, _I_ fix it which is apparently a missing quality in this town) My tool collection _and_ my skills are growing with each job and you've shown me what I need next. Love the videos dude. Thank you.

Exactly, if $2800 freaks you out, then you should never go into business for yourself. Because, if you don't have the confidence to make that investment in yourself, no one else is likely to either.

Or rather if it 2800 freaks you out, take time to learn more and develop more confidence until you feel ready to invest in yourself. The earlier you learn these lessons the sooner you can work for yourself.

best start up video I have ever seen!!! I know so many idiots that thought the first thing they needed was a $5000 snap on box. then couldn't afford tools. I still have my $179 harbor freight tool box that is packed with really expensive tools now. People always say I have a lot of money in cool tools, and I respond thats because I don't have a $40000 SUV in the driveway!
