This was a great primer. Having the chisel skewed when building that free hand muscle memory was key for me. Helps keep you much more stable. I’ve found those Faithfull stones to actually be much flatter, much more often than even the Trend stuff. Even DMT quality control leaves an awful lot to be desired these days. Took 4 Trend and 3 DMT before I got ones that were acceptably flat. I use Faithfull for workhorse plates and Atomas for everything else when diamonds are called for.
Hi James. Great to see you on here. Even better to catch up on Wednesday night. We have to start somewhere with chisel sharpening and I think this is okay. It's not polished, not scripted, just as it happens. Stones can be a nightmare. I've been lucky with those simple and affordable Faithful stones. 3 or 400/ with 1000 on the other side. I hope it helps Gill and if it helps a few others too, that's great. And I've got the Playlist with a number of sharpening videos too. See you soon Jamie
Love your teaching style! I am so excited to learn how to sharpen my dad’s old chisels. He was an amazing woodworker and I am so blessed to have learned from him but he died when I was young so that I never got to learn all of his techniques. This one lesson was immensely helpful! So glad I found your channel 😊
Thank you Lisa. Have you subscribed? If there's anything you want to know then ask. I have done a Sharpening playlist. There's all sorts in there. A very similar set up for each style of chisel or stone, just a few differences. Ask away. Make notes in a pad. I find that helps me with things I'm new to (my Yoga details all go in a pad)
😂 😂 😂 Don't you start that too 🙈 Outside of RU-vid or Instagram,(I'm only putting that there if someone reads this and says they're terrible) I've never heard a bad word about the Faithful diamond stones.
It's just practice Darren. Gary (who I mentioned in the video) used to come to my classes/workshops. He's really very good..🤔 No, he's excellent at sharpening now. The more you do, the better you get. Good luck, get out there and get one edge spot-on. Whatever it takes, get it right. Learn to diagnose issues and learn from them. You'll get it.
Great thank you Jamie you're superstar doing this for me! Being a real novice it's good to see the close ups and a lot in real time plus that you don't need a load of tools to do it. Some videos you can't actually see what they're doing and they assume a level of knowledge - which I don't have. You helped me buy the chisels so now time to sharpen them but need to buy an oil / water stone.
Glad it was helpful Gill. Aimed at you and others that might want to try it. I'll send you a link to an affordable (but not rubbish or waste of money) Waterstone. Was your diamond stone 300/1000?
I do it the simple way now as you know. Veritas stuff was good but fiddly once I got used to the hand prep and sharpening. Loved the video and the shout out🤣🤣 I think my first chisels were the same as the ones in the video!
I do. I taught myself to carve and obviously to sharpen the tools too. The V tool is probably the hardest to sharpen if it's abused. I did one a few months ago and spent 45 minutes grinding and sharpening and it worked really well. Maintenance is the key. Keep them 'topped up' Have you subscribed? I'll do more smaller videos on different tools, when I can. Or when I need to do it, and it's worth filming. Jamie
