Counselor Carl (serenityonlinet...) offers a list of 22 Basic Human Rights for Relationships and Self-Development, so you can begin the journey of uncovering your True Self. These are not political rights but human rights concerning autonomy, self-care, and relationships. Those raised in abusive or dysfunctional families often have a hard time believing they are entitled to these rights, but they are. Counselor Carl did not invent these rights because they are your birthrights. Counselor Carl's straight-forward teaching style makes complex concepts easy to understand. Counselor Carl is a licensed, professional counselor with over 20 years of clinical experience both online and face-to-face.

"I have the right to not be responsible for the feelings of another" really powerful.

king.a16. Yes, especially for codependents who feel responsible for everything, which is why they are so stressed out.

The biggest one for me is feeling responsible for other people’s emotions and happiness. That one thing has tormented me my whole life!

These are eye-openers for me, an adult child of an abusive, alcoholic father. I am writing them down and will keep writing them down until I can internalize these concepts. Thank you!

I love the last one, reminds me I have the right to walk away from holiday gatherings that are toxic. There was so much dysfunction in my family holidays that I hated holidays.

Elisa Xavier. True, because many people were disempowered by childhood abuse and dysfunction. Healing and Recovery involve taking back the power so you are empowered to take care of yourself spiritually, physically, emotionally, and in all your relationships.

Counselor Carl, parents sometimes were more focused in solving their problems than making kids understand that they are entitled to have rights other than obligation to behave and obey them. That may seem a 'minor' trauma, but, in fact the impact may limit one's freedom and self-respect. Thank you so much

At 3:01 the right to choose with whom I spend my time and with whom I share my body. The body part of that right does encourage extra-marital affairs. The right to choose to whom I spend my time; bad company happens in this manner.
@Serenityonlinetherapy
@Serenityonlinetherapy 7 лет назад
Notice that these rights belong to everyone! Thus, I have the right to expect that others treat me with respect and not violate my rights. So, if we agree to be faithful to each other, we both have the right to expect that faithfulness and to the obligation to give that same faithfulness to our spouse, unless that obligation is ended through divorce or separation. Still, I have the right to decide who I share my life and body with, and you have that same right. Does that make sense to you. Marriage is a negotiation, and whatever we agree are the boundaries of our marriage must by followed by both.
