Graphics in Video indicates restriction to "less than five pax"And "less than six seats."The restriction actually reads "six seats max" and " no more than five pax" plus pilot.

So effectively not much has changed except you no longer have to find an FAA designated "AME" but still have to meet the same medical standards with almost the same frequency, with a doctor of your choice. Thanks AOPA for polishing a turd.

Three questions: (1) Can I fly IFR if I have a basic med and the rating? (2) Can I fly to Mexico and Canada with basic med? (3) Is aircraft insurance generally higher when flying basic med?

I would love to pilot a plane but unfortunately I think my bad heart and a medication I take disqualifies me from flying and whats really bad is outside of automobiles,trucks, and RVs, aviation is one of things I am highly interested in. Since I found a few aviation sites on RU-vid all I basically watch now is videos about airplanes.

Poor vision doesn’t disqualify patients - if its correctable. Many other medical conditions shouldn’t disqualify pilots if correctable. As a psychiatrist, I’d include treated and controlled ADHD, and Depression. (I’d far rather any pilot with depression be treated-than “hide it,” to pass a physical). I’d expect them to not fly if impaired. Just like if glasses missing or broken, etc.

A few weeks ago I had my exam for a Class III medical. I admitted that I had one episode of Atrial Fibrillation one year ago lasting less than 24 hours. Wow! I had to get an echocardiogram, an EKG, a heart monitor for 3 days, a stress test, and a Sleep Apnea overnight test. I passed all the heart tests with flying colors. The test did show that I have sleep apnea, so I am now on a CPAP machine and all my numbers are now normal. The Flight Surgeon has all this information and will not return my emails or calls. My Class III is now expired. The question is can I go to my Internist with all these tests results and have him certify me for Basic Med? I have a Stemme Motor glider and a Columbia 400 so I can stay within the parameters for the aircraft. I'm ready to fire the flight surgeon. What are my options?

Needed is a complete rundown of the medications and conditions where there will be a deferral of the 3rd class then what one should expect and what would need to be done. I said complete! People are not medical experts so how would they know what would cause a deferral?

Dang it! I thought is was going to be able to get one of these but now i got to go through a big deal to get me 3rd class. I just had a stent put in and the FAA wants a book of information plus a stress test. Have not had a certificate since 2002. Oh well it was a shot. Thanks for the informative video.

Same here. Heart attack in 2004, stent put in, not a single issue since, not even a case of angina. Getting through the FAA requirements after a heart attack is next to impossible. But hey I can go fly an ultralight all over the place - makes no sense.

One correction (in case anyone watches this now -- yes, I know there are newer videos and info out there since this was made). You CANNOT act as safety pilot unless you are designated PIC (which may give problems with insurance policies) per an FAQ on the FAA website at www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/basic_med/media/basicmed_faq.pdf which specifically says: Q25: Can I use BasicMed to act as a safety pilot, rather than holding a medical? A: Only if you’re acting as PIC while performing the duties of safety pilot. The statutory language prescribing BasicMed said it only applies to people acting as PIC. BasicMed cannot be exercised by safety pilots who are not acting as PIC but are required crewmembers.

I am currently training for my PPL so do I qualify for the option of BasicMed or do I need to get my first certificate, the 3rd class medical, from an AME... I ask because in the AOPA rules it states this... • If you’ve never held a medical certificate, you will need to get an FAA medical certificate, regular or special issuance, from an AME one time only. Thanks for any help.

No, you will put it on your next medical application. Also, if you have anything occur that would be a disqualifying condition or you think you might be, that would be when you want to contact your AME to see if you can still exercise the privileges of your medical.

Excellent run through of what is now defined and needed for BASIC MED. Once again, the FAA were their natural selves, pricks, about making any rational rule changes. The congress with AOPA pushing the hell out of them actually did something good for us lowly, poor General Aviation pilots and owners. My dues actually did some good. My annual is about due so I will be flying more, now. Since this applies only within CONUS, we should restrict GA flights from foreign shores until they have reciprocity and allow US pilots to fly within their borders with BASIC MED. Hear that AOPA and Congress.
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 7 лет назад
Ya have a good point about restricting foreign flights! Most states work the same way with reciprocity regarding concealed carry permit, they will reciprocate based on the sole reason that another state is willing to with them.

Really wish I could get my medical. Type 2 diabetes is keeping me from getting a pilots license which has always been a dream of mine.
@GeorgeSemel
@GeorgeSemel 7 лет назад
Well, you can get a medical with Type 2 Diabetes, I am Type 2 and I fly professionally! As long as you are treating it with oral medication, diet, and exercise. and have no adverse problems and your A1c's are under 9.0 you will get a medical. What happens is that your doctor documents the condition, you then take that to an AME, to do a medical it then gets kicked up to the Regional Flight Surgeon and in 14 days or less, you will have your medical, when I was diagnosed, I told my AME and he put me in touch the regional flight surgeon, and It took 3 months because I needed that much time to show no ill effects from the medication. You should not have much of a problem.

Have a whole slew of things at only age 29 now, like drug abuse in my past (it's OK by the FAA once oyu're clean as long as I have been, but still..), on 4 psych meds, psych history, one suicide attempt (like 7 or more years ago), a few psych hospitalizations going back before 5 years ago, being 70 lbs overweight (250 lbs 6 feet)... high blood pressure untreated... For now or forever, I'll always be able to stick with simulator flying and be a passenger...Maybe just start hanging around KOXC, the closest airport to me and talking with students and instructors. I wish Type II diabetes has an outright cure so people like you could fly... or get a PPL. Maybe you can get a sport license I"m not sure. Take care.

Dude! Come on man, get off of your ass and solve this issue yourself. No Doctors necessary. First educate yourself on your condition. Understand blood sugar, A1C, Insulin (and what it does to the body), and how to treat type 2 with diet and exercise. Here is how: 1. Fasting goal: eat once a day, but start with a 18 hour fast by simply skipping breakfast(That means nothing except black coffee, or tea, etc until lunch). You should work your feeding window down from 6 hours to only one hour. I eat once a day - no prob! 2. Get on a ketogenic diet plan w/ 7-10 servings of non-starch veggies per day. Keep total carbs under 20 grams per day. 3. Exercise: start with walking daily. Increase distance every week. See Dr. Jason Fung ("The obesity code" - book) and Dr. Eric Berg's videos here on RU-vid for detailed information about keto and fasting. Your issues can ALL be solved! Millions of us have bypassed metformin, insulin, and other treatments and have told the establishment medical industry (drug dealers) to kiss our collective asses by curing ourselves! You can do it too! Come man! I did! So can you. I had neuropathy in my hands and feet, couldn't play my guitar---- Not now bro!! All symptoms are gone. I also have lost 55 pounds. My choice of exercise is rowing on a Concept 2 rowing machine. It gives you the most bang for the buck when considering workout time. It's also easy on the joints. AND it doesn't matter how big you may happen to be. Sit down and start rowing. FYI - there is an entire community online that row with the concept 2 rower. Good luck, see you at Oshkosh!!

6000 pounds? Yikes! My 2-seater airplane is just over 600 pounds. Even the Cessnas I used to fly were 1200 to 1600 pounds if I remember correctly. One killer is, I love to fly to and in the Atacama Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina. Two problems. The Basic Physical doesn't apply outside the USSA. Second, some of the valleys between the Atacama Andes aren't much lower than 18,000 feet (and some of the mountaintops are over 21,000 feet). 3rd class seems much simpler and not that expensive.

Yeah, but.....my personal physician is an AME and he will not do Basic Med as many AME's will not. SO It may be harder for me to find a physician to do a Basic Med than to just get a Class III. Finding another Dr. in my system may prove interesting with insurance issues. Crappy headache I am afraid. I will probably have to just pay $200.00 in any case. So the only gain is if you may have had some issue preventing a Class III. Oh, you can also instruct without a Class III medical, but you cannot act as or log PIC time unless you have a Med. (So primary instruction may be an issue since your student is not PIC) Unless something has changed, that is the case. This came up in a CFI Refresher course I took. Any other CFI want to challenge my claim?. I am open to it.

Why don't they just say "if you can keep it up, you can fly it"! Seriously, though, any progression in the FARs as far as GA is concerned is all centered around satisfying the need of an aging pilot community to keep flying. The FAA is doing absolutely nothing to draw new people into general aviation. This condition has existed for decades. There has been a recent upswing in light aircraft design but the market is headed for collapse when all their customers die off over the next couple of decades. The good news for me, as a flying A&P, is that I will be able to finally have a hangar full of my own planes when I retire!

@Mike-01234 5 лет назад
All I can say is never get diagnosed for sleep apnea because then you have to provide the FAA software download from your cpap machine your sleeping 6 hours plus a night and a note signed by your sleep doctor they issues a SI which expires ever 2 years takes 6 months for the FAA to approve again. I saved a co-worker he had already scheduled a doctor for a sleep study I told him about the FAA problems he cancelled. The issues is sleep industry is a billion dollar industry and when you get a sleep study it's very difficult to sleep because of all the wires and test probes on your head, face, and neck. Just about everyone is diagnosed as having sleep apnea if you snore at all so they can sell you a $2500 machine and $100 a month in supplies all paid for by your insurance. I told co-worker drop some weight and seemed to resolve the snoring at night no problems with the FAA he wants to get his PPL.

I already had my 3rd Class Medical Cert. Can my CDL School bus license and medical be more than enough for what the FAA requires since our medical exams are more strict and we periodically are tested for illegal drugs? Second question, do these requirements include flights between sunset and sunrise. You have to have held a FAA medical, DOT medicals do not count as they are less strict on the medication and physical requirements. If you have a 3rd class or basic med medical, you would be able to operate an aircraft as a private pilot at night, provided it is so equipped.

Hey there Jon Unfortunately, I do have a DUI from about 4 years ago. I am currently thinking about a future career in aviation however, everything is vague and I cannot seem to get a clear sense of the issue. If you or anyone else here has some feedback I would love the help. Thank you , Ross

This is great. I've always wanted to fly and was devastated when I found out I was colorblind
@747-pilot
@747-pilot 7 лет назад
You CAN fly if you're colorblind, just not professionally for hire or for the airlines. The FAA will issue you a restricted license for DAY flight only and something that says, "not by color signals or something". Further if your color blindness is not severe (mild to moderate) you can even fly as an Airline pilot. For that, you've got to be able to recognize and demonstrate to an FAA examiner that you can y you can tell the green, red and white lights that are being flashed from the Control Tower at an airport.

I'm 36 and just getting started as well. There are plenty of options as far as a career goes. It may seem overwhelming at first but the hardest part is simply getting started. Once you get rolln' with it, things will fall into place. Just don't get discouraged, there are a few snooty pilots out there but for the most part everyone wants to help and see you succeed. Find a CFI that you can jive with, if you aren't comfortable, find someone you like. Hope this helps!

My 3rd class medical expires in July. Do I need to immediately get a doctors exam or am I within the 4 year window? I guess I need to take the medical self assessment course since that is every two year but I am curious about the doctor visit.

You would need to either renew your Third Class, get the BasicMed exam, or go light sport (or stop flying until you do one of the first two).

Great info. I guess one question is, how does this effect 1st and 2nd class med? Does 3rd class still exist? also, i'm an enlisted aviator for the US Air Force, (I am not a pilot, I am a Flight Engineer). I have a "3rd class" medical through the USAF on a DD form 2992 (previously AF1042) -- our 3rd class is basically a 1st class, done every year, the only difference is that there's a few exceptions being made for eyesight and a few other minor issues that might prevent someone from obtaining a full 1st class. I have been looking into getting my private and eventually commercial (through an associates & part 141 training program). Does my USAF medical count towards a BasicMed, or do I need to go see an AME off-base first and get an exam to be legal? someone else brought it up also, they say you cannot fly outside the US? what if I wanted to fly across the border into Canada? would I need to go get a 3rd class if it still exists?

Contact the Aerospace Medical Certification Division in Oklahoma 405-954-4821. When I called on my records from 40 years ago they had them. Your 1042 should be no problem, my flight surgeon was always an MD.

Any (constructive) help on this would be appreciated.

Hey Jon, are pilots still able to operate using their third class medical like they were before? For example, if I met all the requirements previously to fly with a third class medical, can I still fly above 18000' MSL with more than 6 passengers?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199

If you have a standard third class that is valid then yes all the old rules still apply, this just allows pilots without a current third class to operate under these new rules.

Basic Med is still broken. The goal of Congress was that if you had a valid driver's license, you should be able to fly an airplane. Instead, however, we have a broken system where you still have to get permission from a doctor, and most doctor's won't give that because they don't want the liability. Instead, you have to meet the same standards as always. Still the same ridiculous bureaucratic hoops, because the FAA is all about control.
@stevegladden1364
@stevegladden1364 2 года назад
It also totally and completely breaks it for any new pilots that have never held a certificate. Seems completely useless.. and stupid. And heartbreaking for many. Somebody who had a medical YEARS and years ago who is in considerably WORSE physical condition can get basic med. While somebody trying to get their pilot certificate NOW and just by a hair for whatever reason cannot get a 3rd class medical is left out. There first and foremost should have been a provision for new pilots who have never held a 3rd class to be able to start with basic med. I really don't get it and I do not understand why this was not provided for.

Is it impossible for me to get a medical certificate that's good enough to become a private pilot when I am : 1) 70 lbs overweight (at 6 feet tall) 2) Have high blood pressure I don't treat with medication... marginally high but higiher than perfect. 135/95 is about the highest Ill normally get but sometimes higher. 3) Have a psychiatric history, but am stable now however 3a) On 4 psych meds. 3 of them are controlled. One's an amphetamine. The other two are a benzodiazepine (clonazepam) and an opioid, Suboxone. Otherwise, Neurontin. 4) History of substance abuse but 5 or more years clean now. Actually clean, not just something I'm saying. Not a drop of alcohol. But yeah, I'm on strong meds. Age 29..male... smoker. I'm thinking no, but maybe if I get into better health it's possible? Basically lose weight and try to get off some of my medications? I know some psych meds like SSRIs are generally OK, though. Thanks for reading.

2 and 3a would be problems. However, the only way you can get a definite answer is if you call the FAA or you doctor. Also smoking may be a problem because you cannot smoke in any aircraft.
