Here I finish the second part of my earlier video on basic motorcycle maintenance on the BikeReview.com.au Project Ninja 400 - in cleaning and lubing the chain. I've had a request for a video on detailing a bike (washing it), and any other requests or suggestions are welcome!
It's a quick and easy job with the right tools, especially a rear stand, if you're not lucky enough to have a bike with a centre-stand, and is an integral frequent piece of maintenance to maximise chain and sprocket life, as well as helping keep an eye on the chain slack.
I use a Silkolene Pro Chain lube and kerosene as a cleaner, along with a rag, and a simple piece of cardboard to stop overspray. For a really dirty chain you'll need a brush, ideally one designed for the job, with bristles that won't damage the chain or seals, and can be quite a bit messier.

Yes Kris I am binge watching ur vids after a loooong time! :P... It's actually recommended that u soak the chain(spray) with degreaser/chain cleaner and leave it for 10 mins so that all the grime between the rings is dissolved... I am not sure if ur degreaser was getting to all parts of the chain there... Then u take a cloth and wipe off every thing after a round of brushing... Yes it's messier and u need to be careful about the floor as u'll get plenty of drip but it's thorough and makes ur chain nearly sparkle... Also better for best performance from the wax/lube as it'll have lesser resistance from any remaining dirt...

Normally because I do it pretty often I don't have an issue with a buildup, but sometimes a more thorough job is definitely needed! Using the wax also greatly minimises the amount of crud that builds up with is a plus.

Will do, that's the Ventura rack. I've been meaning to do a video on their rack system and bags for a while now.

Absolutely, that's a Ventura rack, I've got one on the Ninja 400 and on my Daytona, and I've had one on a number of bikes. Check this website, there's an international drop down top left, so hopefully you can find a local stockist: www.ventura-bike.com/

how often should i lube and clean the chain?

Every 500km is a good rule, although if you're riding in really wet, dirty conditions, cleaning the chain down and giving it a light spray more frequently can be a good idea. If you do it while it's warm after a ride it's easier to clean and get the new lube to set too.

Do you put the chain wax on light or heavier?

I normally aim for a light spray, and reapplying sooner. Heavy and you get more fling, or pick up more crud.
