Thanks! You're right this video is more to show progress, than a how-to video. A big part of what's missing in the video are the first sessions when the pup was avoiding pressure. And I had to apply firm correction. And the balance of incorporating correction and praise. This pup in the video is sensitive and at first was very avoidant. Whereas some pups can be very bold and hard-headed specially on the stock. To where they take a lot more pressure to push them out and back. As far as how I get them to gather. It starts with blocking them, like with the leaf rake, having them change direction and then later on moving out. Once I get them moving out I slowly increase the distance that I push them out, and the number of stock. There are ways to "start" them on a lot more stock at once. Most of that has to do with where I position myself ( I am usually within the herd) rather than the dog. The dog is naturally drawn to work the cattle, so teaching the dog to move away from you is the key to the dog bringing them to you. Probably the most important thing is getting a dog that's bred to work stock. The training works because they are drawn to the stock as their reward. If a dog doesn't have interest in stock there's not much I can teach it about working cattle. @@dagleyranch Thanks for the detailed reply. Its awesome. Also, that leg looks like an ACL repair. It takes time and lots of rehab. I lost mine in an MMA fight and it took about 6-8 months to get full use back. Go slow, don't hurt it again. I'm going to watch Rihanna's video right now. Thanks for the link.

Just wait till they're older. Don't work them on cows with calves, Until they're going good on something easier, like calves or yearlings make sure you get your training down really well with them. From there you can try some dry cows, and if your dog can handle that all right you can eventually try cows with calves. Always try to set up scenarios where your dog can succeed, and keep the training sessions short especially at first. Also do not to let your dog work stock when you're not around. Otherwise your dog won't enjoy it as much working with you, because when you're training they feel the pressure of doing it your way instead of whatever they feel like. If it only gets to work the stock with you, it will always be excited for a training session.

There is some variety within the breed as far as working style. I don't know that I could say it has to do with being male or female. As much as the individual dog itself and genetics.

Right away. start with going on walks with you being the leader, when to go, when to stop. At first when you stop keep it short with praise and then take off again before the pup loses interest. One of the first things I teach is a solid come I will even set up for distractions while using a long line to ensure the pup will not do the wrong thing. I do not reel them in with the line. It is only there to teach them the correctional growl or command. Remember to praise for the right things. Once you can tell them what is right and wrong they will really understand that you are the leader. From there I teach load ups and stay.

@@donovanrozevink2696 I don't take on outside dogs at this time. And I only, really train dogs that are bred for gathering. Mostly I work with the Hangin Tree Cowdog breed "like the pup in the video" because of their ability to hunt up cattle and gather. Although there are a few Heelers "Australian cattle dogs" that might be able to gather cattle long distance, for the most part they're only used for driving, and I need my dogs to do more, I personally I'm not interested in working with that particular breed.
