How would you get better with windy days because sometimes I will need to turn a lot and so I’ll have my rudder to one side and starboard on full pressure and ports easing up on pressure and even adding in some people. But then it will turn slowly and get me fixed and I’ll try to make smaller adjustments to get it back even because then I don’t want to be turning too much one side then another etc.. However, when I try to make the smaller adjustments, it is as if I am just turning too much and now I need to go back. I try not to make super big adjustments like you mentioned and keep them small but constant. I REALLY DON’T WANT TO LET MY BOAT DOWN PLEASE.

Did you ever find a way to small steer correction?

@@leeming1317 small steering corrections are just committing to making small steering corrections! if you are over correcting, lessen how much you use the rudder and plan a few strokes ahead

What do you do in a river like the cuyahoga where there are a lot of 90 degree or more turns, and there are some steel bulkheads lining the river, so heading towards shore doesn't only slow you down, but is dangerous?

Chethan Chandra, I’ve never rowed that course, do you tend to take those turns at full power or lighter? I’d come at the turns as wide as you can allow yourself to (planning ahead as you approach them, rather than swinging out), and definitely have one side power up hard. If you’re going full speed, you might need to drop 2 people out on one side, like 6 & 8 seat. Even if you’re in a piece, it’s probably better to get pointed and make the turn efficiently rather than take the whole turn super wide. If you’re not in a piece, do whatever you need to do. Always better to keep the boat safe.

Cox Talks by Cat Sheffler, its difficult to take wife turns because there is so much river traffic. I normally put max pressure on one side, no pressure on the other side, and full rudder, but sometimes I still find my point off.

Chethan Chandra that’s great to be aware of the other boats, that’s really the most important. When I say wide, I just mean approaching the buoy, because either way you cover the same distance for a turn, but if your course starts further from the buoy line then you can begin your turn before you pass the buoy, which ends up taking less room after the buoy. You can almost try to take 2 45 degree turns so you pass the buoy at a diagonal. Definitely try dropping some people out on one side in addition to rudder and power. If that’s not enough, you can also have someone drag their blade. So if you drop our 5&7 seat, have 7 seat drag their blade at 45 degrees which adds drag but turns the boat faster. It’s like holding a bit but you’re still moving.

how do you find you point in an 8

Same way as in a 4, you just can't exactly see past the heads of your rowers. I'd look for a point above their heads, or even stay parallel to the shore if it is straight, or if it's something directly behind them you can't see but that is the point you want, then not seeing it means you are pointed on it!
