Amazing! TFP best summarized and visualized something that I have seen students go through hours and days and exercises ad nauseam of online examples just to still not fully comprehend this.

YES. At last. Been spending my Sunday doing VOR flights and approaches in FS2020 to recap knowledge. This video came at the right time. Thanks!

With a TO indication and needle centered, the radial you’re on is at the tail of the needle. With a FROM indication and needle centered, the radial you’re on is at the head of the needle.

With the HSI with the flags under the needle, it's easier to understand.

A lot of people don’t understand no matter where you are, you are “From” the VOR unless you are on top of it. With an NDB no matter where you are located, you are always going “TO” the station. The term reverse sensing is not reality. It’s more of an orientation. Think of driving north on a road and holding the map straight up. You see the town you’re going to on your right side you know you have to make a right. Proceed southbound on the same road holding the map Straight up and you see the town you’re going to off to your right however, you’re right is now opposite with the southbound heading. So if you make a right, you will essentially go the wrong way. It is the same with a VOR. The VOR will show you whether you were left of right of the radial regardless of your heading. Think if you were driving a model car. If you drove it away from you and made a left turn, it would go left. If it was coming towards you and you made a left turn, it would appear going to your right. Once you understand orientation, you automatically know where you are in relation to the station.

The one FROM is the radial you are ON. That was the memory hook I was shown.

For me what worked best to simplify the written test questions ...if I split the instrument up into 4 quadrants and then broke it down into if am I going TO or FROM the station...(assuming your CDI utilizes the TO flag on top and FROM flag on Bottom, some only have them on the top half) - - > say I have the TO flag with a left needle deflection, I can cover up the top half and then the left half that the needle is deflected. Which leaves me with 1 quadrant in the bottom right corner. Depending on my heading I can easily tell where I am from the station with the quadrant that remains uncovered.

Does the app now include IFR training? I'm really looking forward to this.

I replayed the video multiple times, still confused, why did you pick the number "1" in the last example instead of number "8"?

Take a look very carefully. He aligned the plane in the HSI with the planes orientation in the image. The OBS is set to a 090 radial. Its left of course. Is flying a south westerly heading. You can also determine the plane is north of the vor because of the 090 radial the course deviation indicator being south of the plane. The most important thing to remember is the VOR never moves.

Pause the video at 6:07 - - > now try this method, cover up the half of the instrument in which the white triangle is located (360° clockwise to 180°), now take other finger and cover up the side in which the needle is deflected to (090°clockwise to 270°) - this leaves you with only one "quadrant" visible which is where your plane is located - somewhere between 270 & 360 which is NW of the station. Then finish it off by noting which direction the orange needle is facing and that is your current heading. So you are NW of the station on a ~205° heading. Hope this helps, easier to explain in person but this is what helped me on my written and it works 100% of the time.

Needle is on 090-270, and the flag shows on the 090 side. Therefore, the VOR is east of you, so you're west of the VOR. Needle deflection is towards the south, so you're north of the course.

trying to compress all facets of VOR flight into a 7 minute video? lol no.
@thebadgerpilot
@thebadgerpilot 6 месяцев назад
I can compress it into three words… tune, identify, track. Now you’re proficient! For 7 minutes, this video does a pretty good job as a basic overview, but yeah, for an in depth understanding you’d need longer, more in depth videos
@austinh7967
@austinh7967 6 месяцев назад
VORs are a little tricky but they really aren’t THAT complex. I agree that 7 minutes isn’t enough time to get a full understanding of the way VORs work, but this is pretty good.
