Basic Training awards. Many recruits are surprised to know that you can get awards and medals at Basic Training. The Air Force gives out the most and the Marines give out the least. But no matter what branch of service you're in, there will be an award waiting for you if you're good enough. So,lets go ahead and review a few. First, a marksmanship badge. Depending on how well you do on the firing range, you could win a variety of marksmanship awards. A grenade badge. You throw a couple of live grenades-you'll get a grenade badge to wear on your Class A military suit. Global war on terror medal-you get just for joining. So you're off to a great start from day one. PT awards. If you get a perfect score, on your army fitness test, they give you a badge to wear on your PT uniform. The Air Force gives out two awards for PT-the thunderbolt standard and the war hawk standard, depending on how well you do on the PT test. Graduation award-national defense service medal. The Marines get issued the eagle, globe, and anchor emblem for graduating. There are also coins available to achieve for passing certain events. For example, in the Air Force, you get a coin for completing "the beast". In rare occasions you may even get promoted, while at basic training, but earning a coin, badge, or award is much more likely.

"In the Air Force, you get a coin for completing the BEAST" No, you don't. You get the Airman's Coin upon earning the right to be called an Airman, as oppose to a trainee, which happens the day before Graduation. Your reward for completing BEAST is...completing BEAST.

I was nominated for an AAM(Army Achievement Medal) for "Most Improved Soldier Award" but someone else won. I wish I would have gotten it though...

Upon graduating Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, I was told I made the Battalion Commanders' List, one of about 20 soldiers in the battalion. I don't recall receiving anything for it, but I do remember being singled out during the graduation ceremony. It's not something that shows up on my DD 214, so I treat it like it never happened.

You usually receive a certificate of achievement/appreciation with things like that and they're supposed to get added to your iPerms. Doesn't always happen, because well... People are lazy and don't do their job right.

He is mentioning how all the branches do it. I see no problem in that.

***** I'm in the army and I don't talk shit about other branches. And it really isn't a big deal of a call a Marine a soldier. A soldier is defined as "one who fights as part of an organized arm force." Don't try to nitpick just to be an asshole.

Shane94M no douche, Marines are Marines. Calling us soldiers is disrespectful.

Kyle Koedyker By definition you are also a soldier. You may be a marine, but you are loosely a soldier too.

Not entirely true. My best friend went into the Army, and has never even shot a gun before, and got many awards for his accuracy!

Army hates when you come in with gun experience because the often need to "retrain" people to use the firearm their way. so unless you are familiar with the army methods prior experience will only serve to make it more frustrating/difficult for you. Please don't propagate the myth that it will help people.
