Hey guys!
{ Summary of the Video }
COLORS (0:42):
Primary Colors (colors you can't create by mixing other colors)
Secondary Colors (colors created by mixing two primaries)
Tertiary Colors (colors created by mixing a primary and secondary)
Complimentary Colors (colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel
SHADING (2:10):
don't just add white/black to go lighter/darker
(1) Lights = Saturated, Shadows = Desaturated OR
(2) Lights = Desaturated, Shadows = Saturated
(1) Lights = Warmer, Shadows = Cooler OR
(2) Lights = Cooler, Shadows = Warmer
SPEEDPAINTING (6:22)
___________________________________________________________________
This is my first tutorial video that I've done, so it's definitely really rough around the edges, so please bear with me! I'll get a better microphone in the future;;
I get asked a lot about what I'm thinking while picking colors, and how I decide what palette to go with, and to be honest, it's a lot of gut feeling and spur-of-the-moment decision making. Most of the time I just roll with whatever color I put down randomly, and if it doesn't look good, I either work on it some more or scrap it.
Hopefully this video even remotely begins to explain the basic foundation of how I think in terms of color theory. I don't talk about much (I don't even understand how I managed to make a 14 minute long video) but of the things I do talk about, I think they're extremely important to understand and internalize before moving on to actual coloring technicalities.
If you want to see the tutorial images alone, you can find them on my tumblr!

Yeah, that part was definitely a rough one! Glad you were willing to replay it a couple times though! And yeah, I'll totally work on a more in-depth speed paint c: the one at the end is just a casual painting so I didn't record the layers or anything. Next time though!

@crystalt3

Aww...your voice is super sweet QwQ. On another note, I think you really summarized color theory well in those five minutes, and the demo helped explain a lot to me; although, if someone was just starting out in color theory, they might be a bit confused with the extended application. But I liked the speedpaint since it added depth to the earth tone family, which was something difficult for me to grasp! Thanks so much for this video. :)
@arucelliTV
@arucelliTV 8 лет назад
Yeah, I'm hoping that if anyone was overly confused, they'd either watch the video again or just ask. Honestly I feel like I gleaned over a LOT that would have made a lot more sense, but people on average can only really watch about two to three minutes before they get the urge to skip around. I'm glad you like it though!! It means a lot to me c:
@Owzy0219

In your next tutorial/speedpaint, could it be possible for you to include your layers/brushes? Like, so we can see what layers you're doing what bc I often see speedpaints and wanna mimic then but I get lost when they start pulling multiply and overlap stuff and don't mention it. Well, you say you did everything on one layer for this one, but in the beginning it looks like you put the sketch lines below the color? and later merged? Like those are tiny details that I think could help a lot of us. Thank you btw!!! You're crazy good, man

+Kayla Natalia I just used a brush that had pen pressure sensitive opacity settings (so it becomes more transparent when I press lightly and more opaque when I press hard), and laid both colors (transparently) on top of each other until they mixed!

Umm, would you mind doing a video on tips for blending on photoshop? I usually use paint tool sai or clip studio, where blending is much easier than on photoshop. The brushes are more..watery, whereas on ps they seem to be more about pressure and opacity. It's kind of hard to figure out bc my painting on ps just looks like an utter mess. Is it just more of a practice makes perfect kind of thing or is there a trick?

Same! But I think maybe adjusting the saturation, hue, and color palette could do somethings. Just draw a simple shape or scene, and adjust the colors to see what happens! (To be honest I think it'll be pretty satisfying to see how much transformation color can do to just one art :3)

I've always loved your art and just recently found this tutorial and it was so helpful! 😍 Now that I'm here I'd like to ask you a question: do you ever do studies? how do you go about it? I recently tried a Vermeer study (the girl with a pearl earring) and it went horribly, I found myself picking colors with the eyedropper and having no luck at all in mixing them believably, like they had nothing to do with each other :(

+The Artsy Kimchi lock the lineart layer (also sometimes known as preserve opacity!), and then you can color only within the lines themselves. Another way you can do this is by making a new layer on top of the lineart layer, clipping the new layer to the lineart layer (clipping group on SAI/press alt in between layers on Photoshop)!
