"Affectionate" or simply a demand for attention? That's bad manners from lack of discipline. To discipline means to TEACH. This dog was not taught good manners as a puppy. Too bad.

Dear Celso: Thank you a million times. I need to share my experience. I have an 11 weeks westie companion. Want to learn handstripping to keep his hair healthy and nice (although I intend to take him to a professional from time to time to give shape to his coat). For months before welcoming Trasto to our home I've been watching videos (Yours Celso are so clear). We got Trasto at 8 weeks and at 10 (as you suggested) I've been doing the movements everyday not really getting what I was doing. Started with fingers and powder, followed by "thimble" (not sure that's the word - something in rubber that you on your index and thumb). Suddenly yesterday I have and epiphany!!!! I understood what I have to feel, even the sound the hair does when you pull it:-) Today, even better. Suddenly his crazy puppy hair is slowly starting to settle:-) Sorry for this long message but I'm so excited. Thank you again Celso for your great videos

I've had Westies for over 24 years & until now have not seen a great video explaining how to hand strip them. I am on #4 Westie now & have never clipped him. I use a stripping comb---but I know I need to do it the way you are. Can you tell me where to get the gripping tool? I've subscribed to your channel & appreciate your instruction!
I just acquired a border terrier and he needs to be stripped. So far, this is the best video I have found for stripping a terrier’s coat. Could you please tell me where to find the tool you demonstrated with. Thank you.
Thank you for this. Very timely for me. I have an English Springer Spaniel who is 7 months old. The breeder suggested the best way to groom him is by hand stripping. I am trying to learn. There are not that many videos out the on hand stripping a Springer. Is the process any different for that breed? I am so afraid of damaging his coat. I bought a couple Mars stripping knives and I cut the hair so I am doing something wrong. I got a coat king on someone’s recommendation and that cuts his hair too. So, I bought a stripping stone hoping that would be safer. I just feel like there is a trick to this that I am missing with a Springer coat. Thank you.

Watched & Enjoyed your beginner viedo on hand stripping,very good, I am not new on grooming with the buzzer, But this summer coming up out here in Tn I think I'd like to hand strip my Norwich male, and next day my white westie. Every summer, I can buzz all my 4 dogs in one day, BUT maybe I should take my time and try something new.They are so Beautiful after the hand stripping.About over 25 yrs having dogs,I used to see people doing hand stripping on there show dogs,and I thought that was hurting the dogs and not right,But I see it is really not. Maybe I was Afraid more than the dog Lol, But now I know I can do it.I was very Excited today in the mail I received my Tools for hand stripping,and stone. Your dogs are so calm. How do you groom a puppy that won’t sit still? Our 12 week old wiggles and growls when we try to trim his nails. We have put him on the table daily since 8 weeks to brush him and touch his feet. What age do you recommend to begin hand stripping? Thank you for the informative videos!
You have to teach them to behave, maybe that should be my next video. I believe 10 to 12 weeks is the right time to start hand stripping. There is a way to train for nails as well. I will try to do a video to help westie owners like you to train your dogs.

To be honest I haven’t bought a stone for years as they last a long time. You can find them in dog show vendors, hardware stores and beauty stores. Regarding the tool I use, Pia Micheelsen Rol from Denmark sells it, please look her up on Facebook, you can also ask her about the Larsen Knives 👍🏻

Hi! Thanks for this video; it's so helpful! I got my westie a few months ago when she was 2 years old. I do not know her grooming history but her groomer has used the clippers on her since I got her. Is her hair ruined? Can I still get her hand stripped at this point? Thanks!
How old is her? Does her hair feel soft, Unless you intend to show her and her hair is not too soft, than you may try that, otherwise I would continue to clip her. Just ask the groomer to put a proper westie shape on her, because most groomers do a generic trim. I may post a video her on how to clip a westies. @@CelsoMollo thank you so much for your thorough and fast response! She's 2.5 years old now and I've only had her for half a year. Her hair is not that soft. A video on clipping westies would be very helpful! I'll keep your advice in mind when I take her to the groomer.
Thanks for the video! It answered lots of my confusion. We got our westie when he was 1 yr about 3 month ago. I was confused why mine does not like others have a double harder coat. He has a thick soft coat with "bumps". Every time I am only able to pull so few hair from him, even with force or knife...And he seems bothered by it when I try harder. Do you have experience introducing hand stripping on this age? I think it is too late for him, which is okay, we are happy with his soft cute look too
It can be introduced as long as your dog has the correct hair, if he has been clipped a few times it gets harder and harder as the coat softens. Because a dog at this age has not been exposed to hand stripping it bothers them more. You shouldn’t have to pull hard, if you have to it may be because his hair is not ready to come out or because it is not the right hair to be pulled.👍🏻
@@CelsoMollo our Grady has been clipped for a while. However, his coat definitely started improving when I introduced hand stripping a few years ago. I had never heard of it before. I think we've decided to do only stripping now.
why though i dont get it just keep the hair neat why all this extra work when if they weren't with humans how will they get their hair done..... ima try it out with my baby and let yall know anything different but i feel like leave em alone and let the natural thing happen unless its called to intervene
Hi my friend. I can explain. For once westies are a breed created by man so they would never been in the wild. Number 2 they are with man so man must take good care of them. When you groom the dog you can see what is under the hair and make sure there is nothing wrong with it and if you find a problem with the skin, maybe a tick ar a cut you can treat it. Moreover this process of hand stripping is our way of doing what they would experience in the field going through branches and stones where the hair would catch up and be pulled. On top of that we shows some of our dogs and grooming them show that we care, we are involved, we spend time making sure they look good. I understand your way of thinking but if you don’t know the history of the breed and have not been involved with pure bred dogs you might think that the natural way is leaving the hair alone . Would you let your son’s hair grow and never trim it, his nails, would you let them grow and never cut them? Same thing with your dog, they are not wild animals and they never been wild, they are domestic animals. I appreciate your comment and I am answering it so you can understand the other side.
Hi how much hair should come out for a first time full body hand strip? A handful two handfuls? I can't seem to get much, maybe it is my technique that is wrong?
Well, we need to know a dew thing first. How old is the dog? If it is older than 3 months have this dog been clipped before? A young puppy shouldn’t be for too long on the table so I would groom for 15 min every day so the puppy gets used to get his hair pulled. Some hair are ready to come out some not so don’t pull too hard. You have to groom enough to see some difference in the dogs hair, that is more. Important than how much hair you pulled. Increase the time you keep your dog on the table little by little.
He is 10 months I have been doing it a little bit every few weeks since 3months old. I do it for about 20minutes until he is sick of it and lets me know! I get about a handful of hair in that time. I Can notice a difference but he doesn't look like your dogs after. I think it is just more time like you said. Thank you for replying to me.
Sorry I forgot also he has never been clipped I plan to never clip him. I just trim his eye hair and paw pad and around paws with clippers and scissors for comfort and to keep clean
Yes, some people say hand-stripping others stripping but if you are talking about pulling hair of some breeds of dogs, both expressions mean the same thing.
@@CelsoMollo I had to write an essay about dog stripping can I get get your opinion on it? 😭I wrote : Any dog with a wiry coat that is easily removed can get the hand stripping technique. This includes most terrier breeds as well as some sporting or hound breeds. Many mixed terrier type dogs from Southern areas also have a 'strippable' coat. Some dog breeds who can get stripped are: Airedale terriers, wirefox terriers, wire haired dachshunds, Irish wolf hound, affen pinscher, spinone Italiano, schnauzer, etc. Dog Stripping can be done just with the hands, but tools can also be used to make the job easier. Some tools used for stripping are : Stripping knives in 4 varieties Extra fine, fine, medium, coarse. Stripping stone. Carding knives Undercoat Rake in different sizes. Stripping chalk Finger protectors Stripping comb. Is this right and if not could you please tell me what I have to change 🙏😭
Are you one of those people who can't stand the sight of even gentle "discipline". To discipljne means to TEACH. Teach a dog that licking is not welcomed is a good thing. Ask any vet. They will tell you a dog's mouth is not "clean"! It can carry diseases that can cause illness even death. Don't be so foolish!
Hi Tracey, I understand for people that don't know about hand striping to be alarmed. You can't do this with every breed, the specific breed has to have the correct type of hair, like most terriers and some other breeds. There is nothing wrong with clipping a pet dog but it is actually healthier for a some terriers and some other breeds to be hand stripped. Please look it up if you are interested in educate yourself on the subject. In spite of that I appreciate that you've expressed your opinion and gave me the opportunity to explain what I do.
