In this video, I show how shingles are traditionally railed with a knife and also make a small basket. I use fresh pine (felled the day before) as well as birch handle. If you want the shingles to be more flexible, you should soak them in hot water or, for example, inside a wet towel in a hot sauna.
RAIL OF RAILS
0:10 Peeling and splitting wood. Bend the thicker side more than the thinner, this will cause the crack to pass in the middle.
1:02 Smoothing and tidying up a thick shingles
1:20 Shingles, keep the crack in the middle by bending the thicker side and keeping the thinner straighter.
MAKING THE BASKET
3:18 Laying the bottom
3:31 The pre-folded bottom shingles are folded up to form a wall. Short auxiliary helmets are used as an aid. The goal would be for one shingle to reach around the entire body.
4:43 Adding a sequel if the rotating shingles don't hold under their tails.
5:04 Tapping the bottom so that the soon-to-fold vertical shingles make the pole joint.
5:12 Auxiliary incisions to control the skill of the vertical shutters inside the folds.
5:37 Installation of lashing straps, one strut comes inside the top lap round, the other outside. That is, the three lines are side by side. See the section on deceleration so you realize the technique.
7:44 Breaking tails and cleaning up splinters. Be careful not to cut the stem! Sandpaper (80) can also be used here, but this basket is also suitable for potato field use.
8:10 Double peeling and twisting of birch stalks (2 pieces, length just over a meter).
8:48 The head of the joke is placed in the middle of the basket, the twist is turned and the tip is threaded on the opposite side under the upper shins.
9:16 The second rod is twisted and threaded against the other rod. Note that the thread direction must remain the same. The jokes should rotate against each other. Here, I will first show what jokes look like when they don’t twist against each other.
10:23 The tails are turned in a wild twist (in the same direction as before) and threaded around the handle in the previous style. The tail is threaded between the birches and cut off. The finished rib should now have four layers of them and should feel like a nice in the hand.
11:28 The rib is cleaned (be careful not to cut them).
