Hey everyone, for today's video my brother and I react to Larry Bird for the first time. I am a former basketball player and he is a current basketball player. I haven't been keeping up with the NBA whereas he has been and has a lot of knowledge regarding all things NBA. In this video we are simply watching some of the NBA player: Larry Bird's highlights and he explains to me some stuff i did not know about Larry Bird.

Larry Bird was the best player in the league from 1984-87 and was checked by some of the greatest defenders of all time: Bobby Jones, Scottie Pippen. Dennis Rodman and Michael Cooper. And he averaged over 10 rebounds a game. It's tough but I have him as my all-time small forward and I've been watching since the 70's. The young fella knows his stuff too. Smart young man.

Larry could do it all. He not only could shoot but pass, rebound, and could play good defense. Larry has three championship rings, three consecutive league MVPs, created the 50/40/90 club, and many other accolades. He played against some of the best of all time in a very, very talent-rich era. And he is one of the greatest trash talkers of all time.

@@jemimaxo He changed the game when he came in. One of the first really big guys who could shoot from deep. His rookie year was the first year of the three point shot, so nobody practiced from too deep. But the big guys couldn't guard him outside. He could go left, right and back to score. So they would need a quick guy on him and those tended to be smaller, so he would take them into the post. You needed a big, strong and quick guy to defend him and there weren't that many in the league then. He had the whole package.

Larry Bird's rookie contract - "In 1979 he signed a five-year, $3.25 million contract with the Celtics. That deal was the highest rookie contract at the time in ANY sport." "Magic Johnson/s rookie contract with the LA Lakers was signed after they picked him up from Michigan State. It was worth around $2.3 million over five years as part of the entry level deal he struck with Lakers owner Jack Kent Cooke."

Bird would absolutely run roughshod in today's game. He played against a slew of HoF players in a time of physical play that would stop a game and involve the Police in today's league. Todays players are free to flow and demonstrate their athleticism, which leads to the false impression that today's players are quicker, faster, jump higher and are simply more athletic than in Bird's day. Fact is that if left alone to move freely, Bird's era would have looked the same.

Larry and Magic were very similar skill wise. Both could play all 5 position. Bird use to fill in at center in some formation. It was not uncommon for him to bring the ball up the court. The number player on the team had to be Kevin MicHale. Cedric Cornbread Maxwell was it before McHale. DJ could play, Angie was a 3 point shooter, Parish was at center. All could score when needed.

Not just against scrubs and backups, either. He talked that way to Dennis Rodman, James Worthy, Michael Cooper, Clyde Drexler, Dominique Wilkins, Jordan, ect. I don't think there are many in history who could pull off telling opponents plays ahead of time and still managing to make it happen, especially not against Hall of Fame bound opponents. I'm 45 and old enough to start watching the NBA as a kid during Bird's prime, and I have still never seen someone quite like him. Some have copied a lot of his techniques, but no one has had quite that combination of abilities, and his ruthless mentality made him even deadlier.

@@jemimaxo Can't speak for the other guy, but my personal top 5 would be Jordan, Bird, Magic, Olajuwon, and Abdul-Jabbar. I look more at how they performed against top competition in their prime than longevity and ring count, though. For example, watching how Olajuwon played against D. Robinson and Shaq tells me a lot more about how good this guy was than having 2 rings or how many total years he played. The talent of those guys I listed in their primes was unreal.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. He likely used these crutches after season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

funny thing lil boy there saying that Larry better feature was the 3pt shot... because the 3point shoot was established the year he came to the NBA , so nobody was practicing that... so thinking that Larry best thing is something that he developed as he was in the NBA, talks a lot about his other skills... he was a great passer... he had like 10 rebounds a game thru his career... so arguably, a GOAT claim
