Basketball Player Saves Referee’s Life During a Game

A basketball game in Upstate New York is in full swing when suddenly the referee wobbles and collapses from a heart attack. That's when Toledo Glass City basketball player Myles Copeland jumps into action. As luck would have it, Copeland is not just a basketball player - he's a firefighter at the Toledo, Ohio, fire department. He starts to perform CPR on 61-year-old John Sculli. For 30 minutes, Copeland worked to get Suclli's heart going again, ultimately saving his life.

I have to say, as an advanced first aider myself, someone from above was helping him. Doing CPR is so tiring that even paramedics switch out after either 2 or 3 minutes or after approx. 200 compressions to ensure that the person receives the best quality CPR. To do it for 30 minutes non-stop is nothing short of miraculous. Miles did an amazing job! He knew what he had to do & drew on every ounce of strength God gave him. I'm proud of him!

Often people assume that someone is calling 911, when in fact nobody is. It’s important as a first step to designate someone to call 911 and then update them to periodically relay the patient’s condition to the dispatcher. Also, others should have given that guy a break. It’s a lot of work to do compressions, and technique is less important. He could have demonstrated quickly what to do.

Knowing CPR is so important. You never know when you may need to use it. My job required regular CPR recertification. It can sometimes feel like a nuisance going over the same thing year after year until you actually need it. One day my mom went unresponsive without warning. Muscle memory kicked in the moment my mom passed out. Every sec counts. Thankfully my mom is alive and well today. Please learn CPR. You may be the one to save someone’s life one day.

This is the type of videos that should have millions of views and the recognition that this guy deserves for saving a life 👏. Instead of all the useless videos you see on the internet.

I don’t know what’s more amazing that man’s determination and endurance to do chest compressions for 30 minutes or the fact that in 30 minutes an ambulance didn’t get there to take him to the hospital…
