I know they don't eat people but god god if I saw one of them basking sharks, I would swim like Freddy Krueger was chasing me.

Surprised at all the comments here. This shark isn't terrifying at all - it's totally harmless and actually quite sweet. See how it politely avoids the diver as it eats some plankton (and that's all they eat). It has no interest in harming humans at all, let alone eating one! They've even got little dots for eyes, not like the large and scary beady eyes of the carnivorous shark species.

I've always loved their mouths I wish they were talking. Just 24/7 "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!" like a child at the doctor's xD

Aquaphobia? :) I was always scared myself, caves, seaweed beds, deep water. I just forced myself to overcome it. It helps that in the UK there aren't too many deadly creatures in the sea to worry about.

My sister and I were standing in 4ft deep water at Scalpsie Bay, Isle of Bute, watching red mullet swim around us. It was blissful. Then a giant shark smashed his tail fin on the water just yards away from us. I'll never forget hearing my own heart pounding in my ears as I panicked to get out of the sea. I also heard the very calm voice of a man standing close by, "It's only a basking shark, he won't hurt you". 'Jaws' ruined an extra special moment in our lives. I now know we were honoured to have been so close to an amazing creature.

Legend has it, that the basking shark's mouth is really a portal to another planet, wear everything is a shark. Shark flamingos, shark cats, and shark flowers.

It must have been an awesome experience! Would love to experience swimming beside one of these behemoths one day :)

I half expected a shark in a bathing suit, I was surprised the shark isn't actually basking, it's screaming but no one can hear it because it's under water.

These are possibly the creepiest looking sharks out there. Imagine seeing this is dark murky water. I know they're harmless, but dang these things really spook me.

they can be found in various places around the world. They migrate long distances, but alot of their movements still remain a mystery. I dive with them in Cornwall obviously, they come in close to the coast to feed during the summer.

The first time I dived with them I was def nervous. And once one caught me by surprise and scared the **** out of me. But generally no, they are peaceful timid creatures.

I live in Cornwall and last year there was a massive school of basking sharks at porthmear beach. It was amazing. Thumbs up if you saw it.

@DigitalCoffee08 Hi Coffee, yes they do close their mouths, they only open them when they are feeding. If you pause the video at 47 seconds you can see one just opening its mouth. The 'ribs' inside it's mouth are the filters that they use to collect plankton and other small creatures out of the water. They close their mouth periodically to swallow what they have collected.

Imagine how terrifying that must be seeing this huge thing coming right at mouth wide open and then swimming past you I would've gotten heart a attack

Dawn or dusk the Farralones waters off San Francisco? Yeah, I'd be nervous. Drifting with the current off South Africa? Sure--the presence of Great Whites would make me keep my arms in the boat. But surrounded by the warm, plankton-clouded green waters of Cornwall or Scotland as a group of sleek gentle giants filters dinner all around me? Sounds like a dream come true! I'd learn to scuba dive for very little save cetaceans and basking sharks. I think that's why so many videos here made by divers filming basking sharks include lovely music. It must be heaven.

They are it's gill rakers, which it uses to filter the plankton from the water as it passes through. Swimming along like that with it's mouth open is how they feed.

I'm sorry to all you lovers of these creatures but, AHHHH MY MEMORIES ARE FILLED WITH THIS VILE LOOKING CREATURE. Wait, wait. Okay, anyone have a fear of the darkness? I don't. But when I see a dark hole, there is just something really menacing about it in my opinion and it creeps me out. And, the shark. You probably wouldn't be able to pay me to get near that thing, it haunts me. I hate sharks, mainly because whenever they open their mouths the back of their mouth is pitch black, and watching Jaw's doesn't help either.

I know they're pretty harmless to humans but I swear they're one of the few creatures on earth that genuinely spook me.....

@ManticoreFire No this is normal speed. They can move much faster but generally cruise like that when feeding.

Cornwall is definitely my favourite place in England.

@pryomatic You are right. In stead of teeth they have specialized gills that filter the Plankton out of the water as it passes through.

That looks scarier than a regular shark. Can you just imagine that gaping mouth coming at through the mist of the water?

The basking shark is a gentle giant that feeds on tiny plankton, you should be grateful to even see one.

Basking sharks are passive creatures generally, but still deserve respect as they are powerful animals and could hurt you by accident.

It's amazing how the biggest creatures on the planet are mostly non violent.

@Lizco93 It would close its mouth and swim off :) They can be very fast when they want to be! . When you're diving with baskers you generally just sit still and let them come to you. You don't want to disturb or scare them and stop them feeding.
