Which famous artist had friends like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Madonna? That would be the one and only Jean- Michel Basquiat.
The once homeless teen runaway went on to sell paintings for $25k when he was just 20 years old and had a piece sell in 2017 for an all time record high at auction for an American artist. His quick, but powerful career is still inspiring artists today. Find out why!
Hope you enjoy this video while we celebrate Black History Month!

New York in the late 70’s early 80’s was a thrilling place to be, and Basquiat was at the center of it. A true legend.

Eko IKO lol! I know this as well...but he is Caribbean American... would I be Jamaican if both of my parents were from the United States, but I grew up in Jamaica? His father is Haitian, and his mother is black Pueto Rican.
@omartistry
@omartistry 4 года назад
Eko IKO So your saying African American is a nationality? Not a specific black ethnic group with their own culture?
@omartistry
@omartistry 4 года назад
Eko IKO I know of the Gullah Gechee (I have ancestry from there) and the Caribbean mass migration, but recent generation of Caribbeans and Caribbean Americans don’t claim African American ancestry unless it’s something they can use to look good, but they hate being called Black american and often say we don’t have culture and are white washed. They don’t want anything to do with us...so why claim them?
@omartistry
@omartistry 4 года назад
Eko IKO I know this.. But what counts as an African American? Those who grow up in the culture....or directly descend from the culture.
@omartistry
@omartistry 4 года назад
Eko IKO only because they don’t see us as African people. They see us as white washed.

At 00:02:50, Warhol had no connections to Downtown 81. This was a Glenn O'Brien (of TV Party fame). I think Marisol, and some other "arty" types produced this expository film. It's not a groundbreaking film but if JMB is the focus from which one becomes immersed into the Now Wave/New York scene of the late 1970s--early 1980s, then you'll want to watch it. One might find themselves re-watching it, because it's loaded with iconography and icons of that period. For example, John Lurie, Lee Quinones, Fab-5 Freddy, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, as well as the gang from the Mudd Club.

ROFL To each his/her own. If you have money to waste be my guess. There are SO many talented black, African American artists who have been forgotten and when alive was under-appreciated for their true craftsmanship, dignity and artistry. Jacob Lawrence, Augusta Savage, Ernie Barnes and Charles White to name a few. In my opinion Basquiat's work sells for millions now only because of his mystique, tragic death at a young age, and his relationship with Madonna. And his connection with the equally talentless Warhol. His work is no more than childlike scribbles on paper and canvas. Just goes to show people will pay money for anything, including bananas taped to a canvas.
