Shan O'Gorman, better known as The Aquatic Biologist, sits down with host Danny Pruitt to talk bass behavior and how he targets trophy fish. They also discuss the use of Relative Weight to assess the health of a fishery. Lot's of great information in this one for anglers of all experience levels.
We appreciate you taking the time to watch. We feel blessed to have the opportunity to do this and we are grateful for all the support. Danny&Josh

Great podcast. I live across the street from Commerce reservoir and he is spot on about that lake. Bass light and small crappie.

In north ga we happen to love our striper fisheries and we are set up better for spots. And being as a large section of our watershed in north Ga is the Coosa river watershed, which is filled with Coosa River Spotted Bass. We do have some largemouth but you would have to specifically focus on stocking largemouth in lakes in order to see their numbers get high enough that we regularly see big largemouth up here.

We always burp(fizz) our catfish with a small pvc pipe with sanded smooth edges. Straight down the throat, you’ll hear them burp up the air, and it doesn’t hurt them a bit. They will immediately act a lot better and start swimming just fine.

Fish definitely have an amazing sense of smell. There was a study done on male largemouth during the spawn to see how they would be able to relocate their nest, after being caught. They temporarily blinded one set. They temporarily blocked any ability for them to use the earths magnetic field. They also temporarily blocked the sense of smell of one set. Of the ones that were temporarily blinded, just over 75% were able to get back to their nest within 2 minutes, after being released from about 200 yards away. Of the ones with their magnetic field blocked, roughly the same 75% found their nest within two minutes. The weird part is the ones with their sense of smell blocked. Only 20% of those fish ever came back to their nest. Almost none made it back within the first two minutes, like they had with the other impairments. Scent is a massive deal when it comes to all fish. I think much more than most of us have yet to realize, even though most of us will acknowledge it has an effect.

1:10:29 He didn't mention smell, that's how they find their beds miles away.

This was actually recorded a few years ago and the FFS controversy really hadn't kicked into high gear yet.
