The bass clarinet is such an Underrated instrument…can pull off similar tones to a sax, clean, dirty, screech and squeal, you name it…and I love the range and grunty, punchy lows. There’s an ol’ Jazz player by the name of Eric Dolphy; My favorite album of his is called “Last Date”. I have an original NearMint early Japanese pressing and it has to be one of my favorite jazz records to spin bc of his playing style while using the Bass Clarinet.
I once had a student teacher when I was in high school tell me he’s never heard someone play bass clarinet with so much “hair” on it - granted we were playing pep band songs during a football game. The same day the director of music at the local college told me I sounded like chocolate on bass when working on concert music. People clearly underestimate how versatile bass clarinets and their players are, lol. 💁♀️
There's long been a rumor that Eric Dolphy and I are the same being. That isn't true. Actually, I've looked up to Eric for some time now. Cordially, God
@@jonathanhadas5457 I started playing bass clarinet in orchestra in Croatia amateur, close to semi pro considering how much talents we have, I've got a solo and it is so powerful, definitely heart of the orchestra with french horn. I love it more and more every single day
The bass clarinet. Probably one of if not the most underrated instrument out there. Generally in school bands, there may not even be a player for it, and in other concert bands it usually just holds a C for 8 measures, rests, and rinse and repeat. (Maybe a G if you're lucky). Orchestras may not even include it, and just give the part off to the bassoons. I'm really pleased that people like you are out there showing off how good of an instrument the bass clarinet is and that its not just a black saxophone
I'd love to play bass clarinet but I Can't afford one (yet). Alto saxophone player, soon getting into Eb clarinet and Renaissance chalumeau, I'm way too excited!! Anyway, I believe each and every instrument is awesome in its own way...And pesonally, Woodwind gang is superior anyway :p (Jk, But still. Woodwinds are underrated)
I aspire to be you one day. I started playing bass clarinet for my band a few months ago (originally soprano clarinet player), and you're just beautiful in every range. All improv too? So badass
How did he do that sort of growl thing at 2:23? That was honestly so cool, and this piece is awesome. I've been listening to it for like 30 minutes now.
As someone who is just getting started on base clarinet after 8 years of being a clarinet player, all I can say is bravo, congratulations. I wish there were more oportunities for such a good instrument to have a more important role in performances. Thank you for such an amazing performance 👏👏👏👏 Love from Spain🇪🇦🇪🇦
Very beautiful thank you Jonathan. I'm a flautist'/ singer with ome side-kicks and I'm considering buying a looper.....would you advice me the one you used here? Or have your thoughts evolved since then? And if yes, whuch model is it? Thank you!
I agree an under rated instrument. I played it in concert band I’m high school. My parts were boring so since I sat by the baritones I played their parts & the teacher didn’t even notice.
Bro that's such a common experience. We're luck to even get a normal clarinet part instead of tuba. Once tho I played in a song call "mountain dance" where bass clarinet has a solo
I did similar but I used to play bflat clarinet and I can hear their parts and I listened to other stuff and played by ear. Sadly I can’t recreate this absolute masterpiece it’s so good but I just can’t figure out the notes for parts especially that low part at the start and the what I think is slap tongue part near the end
Is there a Piezzo Barrel pick up on your clarinet, as well as a mike in front of the bell? it’s difficult for me to discern. I’ve bought such a pick up, and have been hesitant to drill and sodder the mounting on my horn. However this piece, as you perform, it is tipping the scale towards making the commitment. It was with looping in mind that I made the investment.
Hey :) No there is just a mic (or two?!) Infront of me. I didn't know piezzo existed when i was doing this concert. Right now i am considering buying the vigamic pick up to avoid the drilling. Hope that helps ✌️
I hate people that judge an entire genre that has affected every modern style from jazz and funk infused Red Hot Chillie Peppers all the way to pop icons like Adele and Ed Sheeran that take a mixtures of blues and jazz. It just seems odd to hate on an entire genre... Seems like those idiots that say "manufactered pop singers have no talent and cant write, not like the oldies like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin" not realising that they didn't write any of their music. Or like when someone says they hate "one direction" but love "the beatles" ... That were exactly the same.
