Bass, Done Better: Inside Polk Power Port Technology

When it comes to experiencing the full impact of music and movies, deep, powerful bass is essential. It's what gives your favorite songs and scenes that deep, visceral punch, making them feel more immersive and engaging. But when it comes to designing speakers, achieving big, defined bass can be challenging.
One of the ways speaker manufacturers try to improve low-frequency output is by incorporating a port into the enclosure. This allows air to circulate freely in and out of the box, which relieves pressure inside the cabinet and improves the efficiency of the woofer action, resulting in louder, clearer bass.
However, these benefits come with side effects. When a ported speaker plays low frequencies, a lot of air flows through the port, creating turbulence that can introduce noise-often referred to as "chuffing"-and distortion. The tube-shaped port behaves like an organ pipe, creating resonances that can mask midrange sounds. And when a port is noisy, the energy used to produce that noise is no longer producing the intended sound: bass.
Polk's patented Power Port technology solves these issues in a few ways. Think of it as a series of technologies that improve the efficiency of the port and decrease the amount of noise and distortion it creates. Polk speakers feature different versions of this technology:
• The original Power Port smoothes air turbulence by guiding airflow into the listening space using flares and a diffusor. This promotes a more streamlined, or laminar, flow, which generates less port noise. The original Power Port is found in our Signature Elite Series speakers and HTS subwoofers.
• The Enhanced Power Port takes things a step further by refining the flares that control airflow, for even less noise and more bass. Enhanced Power Port is found in our Legend Series.
• Power Port 2.0 takes the Enhanced Power Port and integrates our latest X-Port technologies for the best of both worlds. X-Port features a set of closed-pipe resonators, called Eigentone filters, that are tuned to absorb unwanted port and cabinet resonances. The Power Port's carefully engineered port design smooths the flow of air as it exits the cabinet, and the X-Port eliminates cabinet and port resonances. Power Port 2.0 with X-Port is found in the Reserve R700 and R600. X-Port on its own, is also found in the Reserve R100, R200, R400, and R500.

Polk. It would be so cool to see a old school 12” woofer stand up 3 way in the Reserve series or even a all new series. You guys have been making some fantastic products, and I think you could do really well with it.

This is why Polk audio subwoofers like the HTS12S are so good not even SVS subwoofers have this technology

I bought a Polk audio react soundbar a few days ago. May I suggest when developing soundbars that you add the ability to optionally (speakers sold separately) add separate front left and right wireless speakers like the SR2 or something similar to add greater stereo seperation in the front audio. I like the sound from the soundbar itself but I have the subwoofer and rear speakers ordered and on the way because there's a massive lack of surround with the soundbar and in my room there's very little bass (it sounds more likely me low frequency midrange than bass) from the soundbar alone and the surround sound doesn't exist even in movie mode with the soundbar alone. This is only a stopgap to a Magnifi Max AX in about a year.

Could somebody please suggest an eARV HDMI adapter. My current TV doesn't support DTS audio and a lot of my blu rays and 4K blu rays have DTS audio only. When I play those movies or TV shows my TV outputs PCM 2.0. I just need a hdmi in and Hdmi video out with eARC HDMI out split.

Does polk read these comments? I'm just wondering if the Magnifi Max AX soundbar has side firing speakers?. I received the rear SR2 speakers and subwoofer for my react soundbar and the whole system sounds really good but the subwoofer can be a little too much at times even at its minimum setting of -4. It would be great if it was possible to reduce its volume by two or three more notches please.

There’s already solutions to this problem that don’t require this level of R/D. A simple flare is fine in most cases. Port resonances and excess air velocity are usually an issue of the port simply being too small. Bigger port = less velocity = less port resonance. Don’t let these companies sell you unnecessary crap! 🤝

Since your drivers are moving in (perfect?) opposition, the output at port looks like ZERO.
