For anyone struggling to get it down, I'm literally sitting on the set right now and I might have a helpful tip for you. If you focus too much on the actual sliding of your foot, you'll get tripped up. Concentrate on this: hit the bass drum once from the middle of the pedal and then move to the top of the pedal to strike once more. Start slow. Think middle, top, middle, top over and over and it might help! It did for me!

Great video, great technique!! I like to think of the slide technique as an inverted heal - toe technique focused on the toe and then ball of the foot. You can really see this on the slow down at the end of the video with the toe hitting the pedal on the first hit, halfway down the pedal plate and the second hit with the ball of the foot at the top of the pedal plate. If anyone was struggling with this technique maybe try focusing on toe / ball and see if it helps 👍🏻🥁 One tip, if you are getting softer and louder notes you may be extending your foot too much for the first hit. By this I mean pointing your toes like a ballet dancer. Try keeping your foot level whilst hiring with you toe, you’ll get a much louder and cleaner note 👌🏻

I learned heel toe first but I'm finding it really hard to alternate between single stroke and heel toe strokes, as I am a "beginner" heel up drummer. Thanks for this lesson!

I develope the slide on my own too. No one showed me or told me about it. Being a self taught drummer in the 80s there was no youtube. I've since learned the heel toe method from a video from Joe Stronsick in the 90s, called ballistic bass drums. But i am now having to relearn the slide technique again for certain patterns. Do what works for you!!!

Yeah, sometimes you just conceptualize this stuff on your own. As for me, I got the idea for something like heel-toe/slide while trying to copy what tap dancers do. I'd practice the movements on my bare wooden floor, seeing if the movement could be applied to the bass drum. Of course, it's always a good surprise when you realize that you were on the right track all along and that more experienced people have put out resources to help you polish your technique.

I used to play heel toe until I went to a Steve Gadd clinic and he was showing heel toe and slide, and I thought slide was the coolest (and simplest) to uses. I personally like the first note of the double to be a little quieter because it adds a mini crescendo to whatever comes right after.

odd, I do the opposite to this and get the same effect. I slide backwards on the double kick for speed, and according to Ryan Greene, who watched me play a while back, it's the same technique that Eric Sandin uses.

As long as you're doing just two notes, you can. (2 16ths) however, when there's more than 2 16th notes you're going to need a double pedal.

Seeing this technique and the heel-toe technique from other guy in this series in slo-mo, I notice that real difference between the two is that in the slide the first stroke is with the toe and second is with the ball of the foot. In the heel-toe it is just reversed.

when I do this, I'll alternate from my right to left foot on the double bass pedal, and I feel like that's easier. this is also nice to have under your belt if you dont have a double bass pedal. ;)
@joshuachan56
@joshuachan56 13 лет назад
@jayroll005 Yes it does. It will be easier to slide if you wear shoes than barefooted because barefoot has more friction. The surface of the pedal also affect the playing too. The smoother the board, the easier for your feet to slide.

Benny greb, Steve gadd, jeff porcaro and many more use/ used this technique. I had a horrible time with this until i saw another video that explained that there isn't as much of a slide as it is a toe tap in the middle of the pedal and a normal hit right after, at the normal location of the pedal. Some teachers will say to just think of the toe tap and then just let your foot fall onto the pedal where it naturally falls when you do a normal kick stroke. Benny Greb stated that it's like the hand version of the double stroke, ie getting two hits with one leg motion. do not try to literally "slide" when you are first learning this. That was my mistake.

+임준석 I use slide for the same reason as Dave. I just figured it out. Much later, (20 years?), I found out it was a technique that had a name. I can easily get 3 or four hits out of the slide. When I do four, the volume suffers a bit. so maybe doing 2 sets of 2 is better. have to work on the speed though!

Hi thanks for the wonderful video and ur immaculate skills!! You’re awesome! When I practise my slide, I encounter a few issues. It’s really tough to practise slow. There seems to be ‘friction’ on the board preventing me to hit the send note. And sometimes my beater, on the back rebound, hits the top of my feet. I really need help!

In my opinion there is no slide 'or' heel toe, it's clearly an 'and'. With slide it's easier to adjust different speed levels, while heel toe works really well for fast double or triple strokes in between.

I'll appreciate if anyone could help me. My pedal seems to be very stiff, like it has a lot of tension in it. I have to use a lot of effort to even do a single kick, compared to what i see in the video, where only a slight touch with force from the ankle is required to hit the beater onto the drum. For me I have to use strength from even my calf just to do one kick. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to modify my pedal? thx alot in advance

The heel-toe technique starts and ends with the heel *up* anyway. So while this is _another_ option (and of course, the more the merrier) it's in no way a _better_ option specifically for heel-up drummers.

Problem is that he buries the beater. Sacrificing tone for speed when you can have both with a proper technique which this video doesn't illustrate. The second best will always sound different because it is muffled. The only way around this is very dead drums which also make it sound clicky and also make it harder to play physically.

@zhulikkulik

I guess the only way around would be two separate drums and pedals so that nothing is muffled or whatever. But who cares if it does sound good enough and is played fast?
@sorelbaid
@sorelbaid 7 лет назад
I know what you mean, but not everyone needs to keep the beater unburied. It really only matters if you tune your drum a certain way. Many, many masters burying the beater (Vinnie!). If you strictly play a wide open bass drum, then yeah, you prob want to keep it unburied, but most folks don't, and again, different strokes for different folks. I played heel toe for a long time, and it works great for me when I play a wide open drum, but lately I have been teaching myself to bury the beater, which is surprisingly hard to do when you have taught yourself not to for years! I think burying the beater a little bit makes it easier for me to achieve certain accents and things like that, and many drummers prefer "deader" drums, which are not necessarily harder to play physically.
