Hi Jonathan! I sold you a 78 P-Bass and a Curbow 5 over 15 years ago. Wish I had that P-Bass back! Excellent demo. I use 7 pedals: Korg tuner, VT preamp, Markbass overdrive, DOD flange, Analogman chorus, and MXR compressor. May have to try a couple of those...

Hey, Cincinnati bassist here. This is a great demo video, very useful! I have the same TC tuner and really like it. I also acquired an Octabass about a week ago and I think it sounds fantastic. WAY better tracking and overall sound than the Sub n Up I previously had. Anyway, I'd love to check out your live sound and maybe talk shop sometime. Cheers! Jeremy

Peppermint Patty ate 10 people's homework. In all seriousness, I really dig the sound of the Duality for a fuzz that doesn't just sound like another Muff clone. I'm also going to give the VMT a whirl. I've tried the B3K and just didn't get along with it. I found the it to be too grainy/blurry. But every VMT series I've heard sounds great.

It seems odd that you don't like the overdrive before the envelope filter or envelope phaser, but you do like the fuzz before them. I can't imagine that an overdrive pedal would reduce the dynamics of your bass signal more than a fuzz would.
@jonathangroomsbassist
@jonathangroomsbassist 6 лет назад
Mark Keneson-Fuzz pedal reacted differently when run after the envelope filter. It sounded better when a fuzz tone was "enveloped".... Just the opposite for the overdrive. Sounded better to overdrive an envelope sound, so the overdrive is run after. I kind of looked at the overdrive as if it were an old SVT and running an envelope through it...
@markkeneson6806
@markkeneson6806 6 лет назад
Jonathan Grooms, whatever sounds best is the way to go. It just seemed odd in theory. That's why experimenting is so important, otherwise you wouldn't have ever found out the sound you like.

I am looking for a pedal to emulate Moog synth bass? ( so far ) the S.A. C-4 seems-to-be the only viable option. I'm told I can also use either: Fuzz, OD or Distortion (in conjunction) with the Boss OC-5? - Any input is appreciated. I am a guitarist and New to Bass. oNe LovE from NYC

Hey!..👏🏾a fine demo of your pedal setup! But,..I believe that you have to also mention your Bass Amp tweak. What were the settings used on that Fender Bassman behind you? To optimize your experience of sound/tones desired with effects tweaking,..you need time spent on the Amp & direct box actually...to know what you’ll really be hearing live. ☝🏾🎸🎛🔊🎶✨ BTW,...I find that the Mark Bass Amp is challenging to use for “Real Tone Qualities” of the Bass used....too much of the “Mark” tone in the sound..imo!!...🤔
@jonathangroomsbassist

FlamesAt1000ft I would agree with the "Mark tone" opinion.. cuts, but a bit dark and needs work from the controls to get the highs...

Could you run the wet output from the Leaf Audio octaver into the EBS Octabass, so that it's the same pitch as the original, and then mix it back in? Would that thicken the tone without sounding complete crap?
@jonathangroomsbassist
@jonathangroomsbassist 6 лет назад
Jesse Fortner - The EBS would most likely not be able to track a synthesized octave down note generated by another octave device.... octave dividers track a clean dry bass sound with the most efficiency...

Have you tried the Zoom B3? And if so, what are your thoughts and comments? I have been playing for 47 years and have rarely used effects usually getting bored with it and the gimmicky feel, letting t;hem collect dust and eventually sold or traded. But the quality of the Zoom has me inspired for three weeks so far. Still not its master, by any means
@lawrencegenereux8567
@lawrencegenereux8567 8 лет назад
Tim Pascale: I've been using an MS-60B by Zoom. I haven't found anything for near the price (~$100) that compares. 95% of its sounds are on-the-money, and the effects are extremely "tweakable". Check out the manual and preset list that are downloadable.

What do you think of squier basses? danelctro basses? music man basses? music man makes affordable basses called sub series and since I'm a 14 year old bassist I was thinking about getting one. any thoughts? my current bass is a squier affordable precision bass with a jazz pickup in the bridge. it plays great. (I'm using my dad's early 2000s fender American deluxe precision bass with a humbucker in the bridge as comparison.)
@jonathangroomsbassist
@jonathangroomsbassist 7 лет назад
If you like your dad's bass, your Squire should compare similarly....Music Man will be a different tone, but that's what you may be going for. Even most of the more inexpensive basses now ate well made and if set up properly, they should be great playing instruments.

@AJbassist
@AJbassist 8 лет назад
+jose ortiz check out the demon by fuzzrocious version of the ocd and has more of lower mid sounds or buy some kinda of parallel mixer which will allow you mix your clean singal into your dirty so you keep that fat bottom and their is also the b3k by darkglass which is just killer but a pretty penny , i hope that helped

Question: How do you run all those pedals without tone loss. I love pedals but every time I try to use them my tone changes so much that I give up on using them. For me plugging straight into my amp just can't be beat. I have been researching into getting a buffer to try again. Thanks Brother!!!!!
@jonathangroomsbassist
@jonathangroomsbassist 5 лет назад
No secret really, all pedals are true bypass, and I use high quality short length patch cables. Also keep the cable between your pedal board and your amp as short as possible. 15-20 foot maximum. Longer cable will lose highs without a buffer.
@Thurgor_Supreme
@Thurgor_Supreme Год назад
Tuners with buffers seems to be a thing now. Considering that's usually your first pedal after the long-ish cable into your pedalboard should help a lot. A good pre-amp/DI at the end of your chain will do the rest

@@jonathangroomsbassist 4 years late but I get that. I find for slap though, It's basically a requirement. There's just not real way to suppress the increase in volume from slapping vs finger or pick. Most pros who use compression aren't using it to correct dynamics, but to control the uncontrollable and perhaps tame some frequencies.

Why bother having nice old guitars and great sounding tube amps just to totally destroy the tone with pedals? May as well just use a crappy Danelectro bass and solid state BOSS amp if you want to sound like crap. Thanks for the demo, your bass and amp sounds awesome without any pedals btw, guess pedals aren't my thing.(but I mainly play old Blues, Alt. Country & Folkrock) I have the same Bassman100T & Neo 410 absolutley love it, not the overdrive so much but that vintage ch is something else. Would appreciate you running through you amp settings someday, too bad they quit making the 100T.
